ellie: Things aren't so bad if you can laugh at the Devil, is that it? Oh, John... Oh poor, poor John. The Christians say the Nazarene died for their sins, don't they? That he endured a thousand agonies... But you'll die for your sins alone. And when he gets his hands on you, you'll beg for what the Christ brat got.
hellblazer #59: "fallen women"
has anyone else clocked over the years that ellie has some of the most incisive, casually gutting dialogue with and to john there is to be found in all of hellblazer? every time she shows up, i wind up holding my breath for the other shoe to drop.
John Constantine—Eliza Ivanova
Hellblazer (1988) #61 by Garth Ennis and William Simpson
Bittersweet and John being John. Mixing people up in his machinations but still helping them in the long run-- in a way. Or trying to. That's hellblazer baby

the First’s origin story is so fucking funny, like ‘okay there’s TWO Satans in this universe, one is called Lucifer Morningstar and he’s this really complex, tragic figure, a radiant angel who fell from God’s light, his wings shedding feathers and his body contorted in beautiful agony as he plummeted, a lord of Hell who long since tired of his role and decided to seek out something new, and the other is called the First of the Fallen and he is just the most basic bitch you can imagine’
(ALSO i rly hope that if First ever returns to comics, the writers explore the whole ‘literally the first thing God created in an otherwise empty cosmos’ angle because that is actually super interesting??)
Hellblazer (1988) #43
Chantinelle’s first appearance.
Ellie doing The Thing is always so satisfying. Every single time I read it.
