It was another one of those nights. Sam couldn’t sleep—and he wouldn’t dare bother you by tossing and turning. He rose from the bed, grabbed a pillow, and walked out of the room. Before making the final stop to the living room, he went into the linen closet and grabbed a blanket. He tossed the pillow and blanket on the sofa, but before climbing in, he made a visit to the kitchen.

You kept an assortment of teas and herbs in the pantry. Whenever Sam had a bad night, you brewed a cup of chamomile tea with lemon and a drop of honey. He knew how to make it, but you always did a little something to it that he either never saw you do, or simply could not duplicate. The whistle of a kettle would wake you up, he was sure, so he grabbed his favorite mug, dropped in a bag of that chamomile tea, filled the mug with water, and popped it in the microwave for a couple of minutes. As the mug rotated in the microwave, he turned on the living room lamp, made up the sofa, and turned on the television. He didn’t mean to get caught up in the air fryer infomercial, but before he knew it, the microwave went BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! He jumped off the sofa, rushed to grab the microwave door, and carried the steaming mug into the living room. He placed it on the coffee table to let it cool, turned off the lamp, then snuggled under the blanket. Suddenly, he heard slippers sliding against the floor. He looked up and over the sofa and watched you and all your belly slide into the living room. He’d done just what he didn’t want to do.

“You okay, baby?” you asked. “Yeah, I’m fine. Go on back to sleep.” You walked to the chair, yawned, and lowered yourself. Finally, you came to and spotted Sam sleeping under a blanket. “Why are you sleeping on the couch?” you asked, giving your round belly a calming rub. “I’m having a bad night, baby. I didn’t want to disturb you.” You yawned again, pull yourself up, and wobbled over to the coffee table. Sam stared at you with curious eyes, and you leaned over to look inside of his lemon and honey-less mug. Without speaking, you picked it up, and took it with you to the kitchen. Sam’s eyes went back to the television, but his ears listened to you flick the kitchen light on. He listened to the refrigerator door opening, then the movement of a plastic bag. You pulled a lemon from the bag and a plate from the cupboard. Sam heard the WHISSH of a knife leaving its block, and heard you cut the lemon in half…
