“Listen,” Buck began. “I know I asked for this, but I’m starting to think this was a bad idea.”

Athena didn’t break her stride. “Do you want your engagement ring back or not?”

He winced. “You know I do. But Eddie and Bobby are going to be pissed when they find out about this.”

“Who’s going to tell them?” she challenged smoothly. “We’ll be in and out. It’ll be quick and quiet.”

“This is a very, very bad idea,” he muttered, unease clawing at him as they moved deeper into the building.

“Yes, you’ve mentioned,” Athena retorted dryly. She turned towards him, very much looking like she was weighing the pros and cons of duct-taping his mouth shut.

Then—BANG.

A gunshot shattered the air.

“You just had to jinx us,” she hissed.

“Technically, you said the q-word,” he muttered defensively.

“This thing’s got all the charm of a dentist’s waiting room,” he muttered, stretching his legs out and propping his shoes up on the dashboard. “If I don’t find that ring, I’m making you arrest me for grand theft disappointment.”

Athena regarded him with irritation. “Not a real crime.”

“It should be.”

“If you scuff my dash, I’ll arrest you for public nudity instead.”

Buck’s feet immediately dropped back to the floor. “Does that mean I’d have to ride in the back?”

“Yes. And before you ask, you do not get to keep the handcuffs. Take it from me, you do not want to try your luck with these.”

“Trust me, Eddie and I have our own pair.”

Athena hummed, completely unbothered as she eased the vehicle up to the curb outside the burned-out building.

Buck blinked. The silence stretched.

Then it hit him.

“Wait, ‘take it from me?’ What does that mean? Athena, what does that mean?”

She stepped out of the car without answering.

“Athena!” he pleaded, fumbling with his seatbelt as he clambered after her. “I feel like you just changed my entire perception of you as a person!”

He was still sputtering when they ducked under the yellow crime scene tape.

"You actually did it!"

Buck grimaced when a sharp elbow landed in his side—Hen, leaning in to peer at the small velvet case he’d cracked open just enough for them to see.

“Damn,” Chimney whistled, stretching to get a better look at the gold band. “Maddie told me you bought the ring, but I had to see it with my own eyes.”

"Yeah, well... ‘been thinking about it for a while now."

Probably for longer than he’d like to admit.

He ran his thumb along the inner curve of the loop before closing his fingers around it, freeing it from its case. Its weight was solid, grounding, and almost heavier than the turnout that covered his frame. It seemed fragile and much too modest to carry the gravity of what it meant.

"It felt right."

Hen gave him a knowing smile. “A hell of a thing to feel right about.”

“Did you go down rabbit holes like this before?”

The question lands wrong. Buck feels the knife pierce his abdomen, cutting through flesh and bone in one succinct action, freeing all of the emotions he’s been trying to contain ever since his dead man’s blood had begun circulating through his body again. He doesn’t need to clarify what before she is referring to, because he and Natalia don’t speak about anything besides befores and afters. He can’t remember an occasion when she’d asked him about anything that wasn’t related to that storm. It stings more than the electricity that had crashed through his veins.

“Not everything is about me dying,” he snaps.

Natalia blinks, startled, her face a mixture of hurt and confusion. Her feet shift, pulling out from beneath his legs.

“I didn’t say that,” she chides, calm but firm. “But you can’t deny it’s been a pretty big factor in your life recently. It’s… an interesting topic.”

It’s the manner in which she says it—an interesting topic—that thrusts that blade in as deep as it’ll go. It’s clinical, detached, like she’s observing him from behind a glass pane. It’s not fair, but all he can think is: Is the only worthy Buck a dead Buck?

Maddie heard the tap of little feet on the floor before the quiet knock at her door. She barely had time to register the sound before it came again— tentative, urgent. She sighed, knowing exactly who it was. The thunder had been rolling for a while now, the loud cracks shaking the windows, and Evan had always been scared of storms. She could picture him standing outside her room, clutching his stuffed cat, expression set wide with fear.

“Evan?” she called, her voice soft but warm. “Come in.”

The door creaked open, and Maddie didn’t need to see him to know what was happening. His small, trembling form appeared in the dim light, eyes filled with tears he hadn’t yet let fall. Maddie felt a pang in her chest.

“Come here,” she said, shifting over in bed to make room for him.

He didn’t need to be told twice. In an instant, he was beside her, scrambling onto the mattress. Maddie pulled the covers around both of them, making sure he was warm and tucked in. She could feel the way his tiny body shook, his hand gripping hers with the kind of desperation only a four-year-old could have.

“Thunder’s loud,” he whispered.

Maddie smoothened his hair. “I know, but it’s just noise. It’s like when you bang the pots and pans together in the kitchen. It’s loud, but it can’t hurt you.”

He nodded slowly, trying to believe her.

“I went to Mom and Dad’s room first,” Evan said, his words tumbling out like they’d been stuck inside him. “But... they told me to go back to bed. They said it was just a storm, and... I don’t think they wanted me there.”

Maddie’s heart squeezed.

“That’s not fair,” Maddie whispered, rubbing circles on his back. “I’m sorry, Evan. You should never feel like you have to be alone when you’re scared.”
