Okay, the text is going back up on top again. Because Scarecrow's costume is somehow funny yet also creepy, so I want to bury it under the text. But in any case, this is fascinating. We got a glimpse at the psyche of Dr. Jonathan Crane.
He dreams of Cain and Abel from the Houses of Secrets and Mystery, and they show us what drove him back to crime. He was a model prisoner, as he presumably took his meds and fought off his inner demons (as we see him trying to shut the mouth of the scarecrow mask in his dreams). So they put him in a work release program, and he got to be a teacher again. But the new students made him relapse. (Batman Adventures #5)
I guess he was still unstable. The students handed in work with atrocious grammar, and it made him snap. It's kind of sad. His dreams show that he doesn't seem to want to be the scarecrow. He cries as he puts on the costume. This actually makes him super sad. This comic is just the story of a man suffering from severe mental illness, and not getting enough help. Bravo to Martin Pasko for plotting this comic. And to Kelly Puckett for scripting it. I think they actually tell a really compelling story here. I can appreciate that.

Very loose sequel to this story but not really necessary to read it, I'm just in love with Wrath interactions with Cain and Abel.
Wrath felt a stinging in its hand. It would've liked to brag that it wasn't anything it wasn't used to but the pain wasn't subsiding. If any
♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡
Despite the clicking of wooden wheels and other various toys across the creaky floorboards, Wrath's attention was locked on its hand. The pain from a near week and a half ago was finally disappearing, it could move its hand fine now without a burning sensation spreading from its starting point all the way up its arm, even sometimes settling right in the middle of its chest. While beyond grateful for it feeling better, though a scar marked forever reminding it, Lucias couldn't deter its fascination in it.
Even when with its father, forced to preform horrendous battles even some residents of Hell turned away from, it never suffered such an injury, and it certainly never lasted as long as this had. It's hand raised a little barely letting its fingers brush the scar, sucking in its breath and holding it, as though anticipating more pain from the simple action. It's ears perked immediately hearing the sound of someone coming closer, not footsteps it noted. It's head snapped up startling but in just enough time to see Nyx, or Gluttony, there watching Lucias with a little tilt of her head.
"It huwt?" she asked, brows furrowed gently in concern.
Lucias blinked, still growing accustomed to concern and care for its well-being, after the surprise wore down, it shook its head, "N-no... no, it doesn't hurt," it assured, before quickly opting for a subject change, not wanting the youngest child to be worried, "what're you playing?"
"What are," Cain corrected, voice distracted by the flipping of his page, then a pause glancing to Lucias, the red-haired male hesitates then holds his hand out to the child, "you were messing with it. Surely you aren't lying now? Does it still hurt?"
Lucias hesitates a moment, watching Cain's outstretched hand, almost expecting him to lose patience and simply snatch the appendage but when it doesn't happen quite that way, it can see the growing irritation on the oldest family member's expression though, it places it in his hand allowing Cain to finally survey the still healing injury. As he does, Lucias finally offers a verbal answer.
"No Uncle Cain," it murmurs, voice just barely loud enough to be heard, it's gaze cautiously locked on Cain and his small movements with its hand.
Cain eventually hums and releases the child's hand in favor of stroking Nyx's hair a bit as if silent praise for being so considerate. His gaze quickly finds Lucias though, eyes narrowed, "That was very foolish and very dangerous of you, you know. There could've been much worse consequences than that. You best never pull a stunt like that again. Most don't make it back when they make that mistake," he scolds again. It's the same warning Lucias has heard anytime its scar had been looked at.
Lucias's eyes drift back down to the scar, intrest piqued once more, especially as it fully starts to consider Cain's words.
"Why doesn't anyone come back from making that mistake?"
Cain pauses then grins, canines glittering almost mischievously, humming, "How about a story time to answer that riveting question?" Nyx squeals in excitement, prompting Cain to lift her up and sit her on one knee, then arch a brow towards Lucias. The child considers a moment before crawling closer to Cain, simply propping its chin up on his knee. Cain seems satisfied with this compromise, leaning back into his chair as the fire crackles to fill the anticipation, suddenly seeming louder than it was before.
"This story begins long ago... back when the world was just created," he waves his hand in a sideways motion, suddenly the brief description comes to life in a little tear like portal of sorts, a power Cain and Abel only seemed to reserve for the, now three, children of the house.
The view is a picturesque of a land that seems partly wooded and partly desert, "God had already created man and woman," he hummed as the two beings appeared. The man was blonde, tall, strapping nude in all but a bushings wrapped around his waist, and next to him a female with long, curly black hair, also covered only by leaves around her waist, hiding her breast in her arms.
"Together they created the first children of the Earth, naturally. The firstborn was a very handsome young man who tended to the grounds of this new world," he hummed, a third figure appearing that bore striking resemblance to Cain, if he looked younger, red hair curled perfectly around his face yet the top still sticking in to almost as if form two horns, no longer were they just clothed by leaves, now wearing some cloth though it was obvious that it wasn't necessarily tailored as Cain liked to wear now.
Nyx giggled excitedly, pointing to him, "Look! Look like you D- Uncle!" she corrected, though the mistake didn't deter her excitement in the notion.
Cain chuckled then nodded, rubbing her back, "Excellent job darling, and yes, he does. See, it is me," he hummed, smug smile pulling at the corner of his lips, "I am the firstborn son of man," he hummed, but the self satisfaction doesn't last long as he sighed, "but the peace couldn't last as they soon had a second son, that blundering, brain dead dolt, Abel."
Sure enough the forth figure appears, a younger looking Abel. While still wide in stature and gap toothed, hair still black like the first woman's yet styled to look merely more frizzy despite attempting to look combed back, "That spineless ninny herded sheep, something we honestly could've had a dog do twelve times better, but I digress... we were to present our offerings to the lands creator. Whereas I offered vegetables and fruits that I grew by hand, mind you, Abel--the little suck-up-- gave his best sheep as a sacrifice."
As he explained, the visual story telling followed dutifully along, showing now Cain and Abel across from each other. On some stone slab in front of Cain were vibrant fruits and vegetables where Abel's table like item, not too far away from his older brother's, laid a slain lamb limply laying out as if it were only sleeping.
"The creator, however, liked that buttdumpling, oversized jelly gutted moron's sacrifice more..." all three could sense Cain's anger rising at the still bitter jealousy, Nyx frowned in worry, leaning closer to him nervously. Cain paused a moment then chuckled darkly, resuming his soothing stroking of the little girl's back, as well as sparing a hand to pet Lucias's black and white hair, minding it's horns. While the storyteller kept silent, the image continued to play like a movie, depicting Cain eventually bashing Abel's head in with a rock, the very first murder of fellow man.
Cain's smile had returned through this, though there was an eerily dark vibe practically radiating off his expression, one that didn't put either child to ease, Nyx even hiding herself in Cain's chest with a small whimper about halfway through the beating. Cain hummed softly, "Surprisingly, it didn't take long for everyone to notice the pathetic, spastic cretin I call a brother, went missing. The creator approached me," he gently tapped Nyx's back to assure the little girl that the gore was over, as the pictured scene changed to a masdive light comimg over younger Cain, "and asked, 'Where is thy brother, Abel?'... to which I responded, 'I don't know, am I my brother's keeper?'" he hummed gently.
""Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground' the creator insisted, he banished me, dooming me to forever wander the Earth..." Cain finished moving hid hand to cause the pictures and what was projecting them to disappear, "but not before giving me this," he pushed his bangs up revealing a perfect circle marked on his forehead.
Both kids looked up at it in awe, "What does it do?" Lucias uttered almost in a whisper. Cain gave some scoffing noise before letting his hair flop back down.
"Makes me invincible. Well, practically. See, for my deed, the creator wanted me to suffer, likely with guilt or something nonsensical like that... letting some buffoons kill me off was far too kind... so this mark makes it that no one can so much as hurt me, lest they suffer sevenfold.. I've seen people die for disobeying it, meet the angel of Heaven's wrath for it.... what you suffered, my child, is no more than a love mark," he scoffed, "but we're not going to have a repeat, yes? We're going to be well-behaved children, and not raise our hands to Uncle Cain... I dread to imagine how that would go down.. the wrath of Heaven meeting the wrath of Hell..." he shook his head to clear the idea.
Lucias's eyes traveled back down to its scar, pausing before a meek smile pulled at his mouth, tugging it upwards, uttering after a moment, "So... we kinda have that in common, Uncle Cain? Your mark and my mark, as a reminder?"
Cain opened his mouth to protest but quickly found the notion right, even if loosely so. He couldn't help but chuckle and nod, "Yes... yes I suppose so, my child," he hummed, "bah, you've distracted me from my book. How about another story, hm? Have I told you about the reanimated zombie with a mysterious pact to the Elder God?"
Nyx giggled excitedly shaking her head, Cain held her closer as he started the haunting tale. Lucias paused a moment, before its smile grew, laying its chin on his knee once more to listen in as well.
(Who's Who: The Definitive Directory of the DC Universe #4): I've made it to the Cs on this Directory. Considering how long that took, I think i'll be here for months. Is it worth it to do this? I don't know. But I'm not stopping until I hit the Gs (I find A-G at least make a nice flow of letters). So here, representing the Cs, we have Cain of the House of Mystery, The Calculator, Calendar Man, Chemo and Chemical King.
Cain is a weird one; since he's incredibly funny, but he only shows up for horror comics (meaning i'll never get to really read about him). Chemo is another weird one, the living plastic shell that spews chemicals everywhere (with no moving arms, at least back in the pre-crisis days). Calendar Man and The Calculator are two old D-list villians I really like, and Chemical King is a character I wish I knew more about (and who I wish didn't die).
I don't like horror, but these silly stories with concepts like the House of Mysteries are why I tolerate Cain and Abel. Also, it's great to finally read a comic with Mister Mxyzptlk. The fifth dimensional menace who's come back to cause Superman nothing but turmoil this holiday. I have a soft spot for Bat-Mite and Mxyzptlk. Still think it's sad Gilbert Gottfried and Paul Reubens never got to riff off of each other. But i like Dana Snyder's Mxyzptlk, and I think he should stay as the lead voice for the character. Don't know who could do a new Bat-Mite, but I want a movie with Mxyzptlk and Bat-Mite (I'd even take a tv show about them). But yeah, this story looks really fun. (DC Comics Presents #53):

Well, Cain is acting like a socially awkward misogynist, panicking over losing one of his monstrous tenants into the world of mortals. But the far more charming storyline involves Kid Devil. Eddie ends up stumbling onto the path of the monster from the House of Weirdness, and I think he's ended up befriending it. But also, Eddie's Halloween costume is just his Kid Devil suit with a cape attachment, and I find that adorable. (Blue Devil #20):
I always did like Cain and Abel at DC. I just despise and get easily freaked out by horror media, so I couldn't ever engage with them. But Cain is apparently now making a crossover into the pages of Blue Devil (which is a book decidedly geared more towards some amount of humour), so I guess I can finally appreciate him now. (Blue Devil #20):
Based on the sentence prompt "There's that smile! There's that smile that I love!"
Greed was, admittedly, a tricky little baby. One moment he was cuddly, then wanting to be put down, then coddled, then left to his own devices. With the little one's preference changing on a whim, Abel honestly had a hard time keeping track. Though for once he could brag that he was doing better than his older brother. Cain had long since put his attention to Gluttony with only minor interest in the oldest child, Wrath, and nothing short of disdain for little Greed.
Abel, admittedly, worried about the affect it would have on the other children, seeing his brother's lack of concern when it came to his blatant display of favorites. Perhaps, he reasoned, it was why he felt so responsible to pick up the pieces, trying his hardest to not play favoritism. He hoped Cain needed time to turn around or perhaps one of the four other children they had to collect still would win the oldest member's heart. For now though, he was content to share the love he had stored up for ages.
Having had Lucias settled down with a book and Cain already tending to Gluttony with a bottle, he opted to check on the third child. He poked his head into the room quietly, on the off chance that the blonde baby was already fast asleep, but instead he found him babbling and cuddling away with the stuffed cat he and Cain got for him, "Well hello," he cooed moving more into the pastel room and closer to the green bassinet.
Lux looked up and immediately started to prattle on in an almost fussy manner and Abel couldn't help but laugh a little in amusement, "Ohh it's truly a wonder why your Uncle Cain doesn't like you more," he cooed, leaning against the little bed slightly, playfully wagging his fingers over the little baby's head, "I suppose I just need to be grateful I don't understand baby talk, huh? Would you be mean to Uncle Abel if you could?" he continued to tease, tone nothing short of lovingly. Lux giggled at this, waving his free hand up to Abel, still trying to insist his fussy babbles as he did, Abel grinned, glad to play along.
"Ohh you spoiled little boy," he hummed, "talking all mean to your uncle, I'm just being nice! What are you and your kitty doing?" he cooed, finally lowering his hand enough to lightly tap the toy. Greed squealed in response.
"Itty! Itty!" he cheered, trying to wave the toy despite it being too big for him to do so.
"Yes, you have your kitty. Let's see, how does that song go...?" Abel trailed off a moment to recall the words, snapping his fingers when they reoccurred to him, "Soft kitty, warm kitty, little ball of fur... happy kitty, sleepy kitty, pur, pur, pur...." he smiled softly at Lux clumsily clapping his hands in response to his singing.
"Yay! Yay!!"
"Oooh yay, huh?" he cooed, "You like that song, hm? Well, I will just have to keep that in mind won't I, little prince?" he hummed.
Lux smiled wide and bright at the term, coos suddenly becoming much sweeter than before. Abel's humor only grew, eyes twinkling a bit, "You like that too, hm? I know I like it much better when you're sweet like this, little one," he gently murmured, "and look, there's that smile! There's that smile that I love!"
Lux continued to gleefully coo, abandoning his hold on the white cat toy in favor of making grabby like motions for Abel. Now confident that he wouldn't have a tantrum in his arms, the younger brother picked him up, gently bouncing him, "Oh you make it very easy to fuss over," he cooed, "come along now, let's see if we can't get a bottle in you then, we'll get all three of you kids ready for story time."
