It’s so clear when someone is interacting with G1 of mlp using G4 as their mental framework for the brand. Because it creates a tonal disconnect to me.
G1 of my little pony tonally has a lot more in common with Alice in wonderland or the return to Oz film than it does mlp g4. It’s sorta a surreal fantasy.
Like G1 had a species of fuzzy blob creatures called bushwoolies who acted as a hive mind. They always spoke and acted in sync. They had a cousin species called furbobs who all disagreed and fought with eachother on everything.
I can’t ever imagine these guys working in g4. They’re so fundamentally 90’s in design characterisation. Every time I try to imagine the bushwoolies in the g4 style they feel SO uncanny.
G1 was its own story and world that cannot be easily connected to G4 in a way that makes sense.
And that’s ok! I love G1 with my entire heart! It deserves to be appreciated as its own weird story!

The bushwoolies! The costume contest has trended towards group costumes as of late, so I tried to really brainstorm on what a cute group costume might look like. And can you imagine a mom with her kids going as a princess and bushwoolies!? Too cute! I had to work around what colors of yarn I already had (I have way too much yarn already for someone who doesn’t even knit! 🤣), so I made Chumster (Baby Rainfeather) to go with Princess Primrose of course, then Friendly (Baby Noddins), Eager (Baby Quackers) and Wishful (Baby Frosting)! I made them in pom-pom shapes, since I wanted these to look like costumes the ponies made themselves, rather than a genuine reproduction of a bushwoolie! The googly eyes were just for silliness, and I really enjoyed making Wishful’s silly tongue, LOL! I wasn’t sure their cute little expressions could read at a distance, so I’m glad to get some closeups at last! 💖 Happy belated Halloween! 🎃
