Werewolves of Auradon: Lydia Martin (Daughter of Ariel) x Harry Hook (Son of Captain Hook)
Requested by @iammyownsaviour
Lydia wasn't aware that time could stretch like this. Seconds ticking by so slow they may as well be hours. She's aware of every minute that passes.
All she can do is wait it out. Something she's never exactly been good at, but she forces herself to stay just a little longer. It'll be worth it, she reminds herself.
It's not like there's even anything to do to distract herself; surprisingly, the bottom of the ocean is fairly boring. Sure, there are fish and other sealife, but none of them ever come close to her. They're all afraid of the barrier. But she isn't.
Sighing, she watches the bubbles form from her lips and dissolve again a second later as she looks around. Finally, there's a gentle, muffled thud.
Her head snaps back around. Hitting an invisible barrier is a rusty glass bottle, a red rope tied to it and stretching up beyond the surface of the ocean. Inside, a rolled up piece of paper.
Swimming forward, she carefully reaches for it. Her palm presses flat against the same thing it's still gently bouncing off of. She feels around until there's no resistance, then sticks her hand through the gap and reaches around, grabbing the bottle.
Giving the rope a tug, she unties it before taking the cork out and tipping the scroll into her other hand. She quickly unfolds it and reads the messy but getting better handwriting.
Lydia smiles. She lets go of the rope but keeps a hold of the bottle and the letter as she swims back up.
As soon as she breaks the surface, she's faced with a small stretch of land just out of reach, some trees blocking the rest of the Isle from view. And Harry. Waiting right on the shore, just a couple feet away from her.
His eyes widen when he sees her and his face splits into a bright grin. It's like he just lights up.
Lydia waves the letter slightly with a smile. There's no point in trying to speak, they both know. Something about the magic on the barrier makes it soundproof in a way. No communication between them. The only way is that little gap that was somehow overlooked, so far down in the sea that only a daughter of a mermaid would be able to find it.
Even so, Harry still silently speaks, mouthing the words to her. "Did you read it?"
She nods. Gaze softening, she holds up a finger to tell him to wait, then presses the paper against the barrier. It glows in protest, trying to fend her off, but she's not attacking so it doesn't push her away.
Pulling out a pen that she slid into one of her braids just in case, she writes on the blank side of the paper. Harry's eyebrows are creased in confusion, watching her, but when she turns the paper over and presses that side to the surface, his features relax in understanding.
Then happiness, a smile curving his mouth. She thinks he's laughing and imagines it to be a soft sound. Sweet and kind to her ears.
He lifts his eyes back to her, holding her gaze. She smiles back and mouths, "I love you."
Writing it doesn't feel like enough. She's not sure it ever will. But seeing Harry nod and mouth those three words back to her is close enough. Just until she can find a way to get through the barrier completely. After all, if something went wrong in the spell to miss out even one little section, then surely there has to be something she can do to take advantage of it.
She catches Harry's lips moving again and makes out the words, "Don't go yet. Please."
Lydia's hand goes to the pendant resting at the column of her throat. A little shell, holding her voice and letting her be here like this, in this form.
She shakes her head and hears her own voice in her head, whispering, "I won't." Something in Harry's expression tells her he hears it, too, somehow.
