As though sensing his calm, Burgie turns to face him. Bill and Snafu argue, good naturedly for now, over his shoulder, and the twist of Burgie’s body gives the impression that Eugene’s secure and cornered off from the rest of the world, even their buddies.  He smiles, warmly. “You fallin’ asleep, Hammer?”  Eugene kicks at his thigh, playfully. There’s something about the way Burgie leans forward, the grin that teases his lips, that makes it seem as though there’s nothing else on the island but them.  “Just trying to enjoy some peace and quiet.”  “Here?” Burgie’s lips quirk upwards and he takes a swig from his can.

Eugene ain't the only yearner in the PTO! Such great pining and tension, and I love their dynamic in this--Burgie trying to keep cool and professional, even as he can't help but let his guard down and his feelings slip out. And Eugene's got a crush but still has that quiet steel. I also love how this fic grapples with the issue of their ranks! Burgie's not only his boss, he carries the weight of having to try to keep them both alive.
