🌄 Explore My Alternative Buckden Walk in the Yorkshire Dales
🚶♂️ If you’re looking for a fantastic alternative to the popular Buckden Pike summit walk, this is worth considering. This delightful 11-mile route starts from the heart of Buckden village and takes you on a journey through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Yorkshire Dales.
🌳 From the village, the walk leads down Dubb’s Lane, before ascending to the top of Birks Fell. As you cross the exposed terrain, you’ll pass by Birks Tarn and several smaller tarns before joining A Pennine Journey at Horse Head Gate.
🏞️ The adventure continues with a descent into the charming hamlet of Yockenthwaite, where you’ll stroll along the Dales Way beside the picturesque River Wharfe towards Hubberholme. From here, the trail climbs up through the narrow valley of Cray Gill, where you’ll encounter several lovely waterfalls.
🌿 The final stretch of the walk takes you through the peaceful hamlet of Cray and across Buckden Rake, leading you back to the village where your journey began.

Buckden Towers, originally known as Buckden Palace, was an important residence belonging to the powerful Bishops of Lincoln. Situated in the charming village of Buckden, this medieval house was extensively renovated in the late 15th century and even housed Queen Katherine of Aragon after she had been banished from King Henry VIII's court. Approaching the complex, I was immediately struck by the beautiful red brick wall that ran along the road front; this road was once the main route from London to York and Edinburgh. Although the village now has a rather forgotten feel, there certainly would have been plenty of activity in Katherine's day. Yockenthwaite - Cray - Buckden - Hubberholme - Yockenthwaite
Joined by A&M we did a full day out in Upper Wharfedale. Despite a few comments, the climb out of Yockenthwaite was pretty painless and we were soon walking along the limestone ridge.
It’s always good to have a foreground object ...
We had our well made and tasty butties just before descending into Cray. K forgoing the calories of her crisps by throwing them to the wind. The girls popped in to the White Lion at Cray to suss our the menu for that evening and one other task. The boys took pictures of the waterfall.
Forging the torrent at Cray ...
Another fly past arranged ...
Belties ...
There was an ice-cream stop at Bucken accompanied by banter, though apparently no sticks or stamps. At Hubberholme (locally pronounced Ubberam) we had a swift drink at the George before a timely mice hunt around the church.
some ducklings ...
Near the end of the walk we had a final brew down by the river. Mila spotted an Otter! Which we then all managed to get a glimpse of, rounding off a lovely walk.
It was then agreed to go straight to the White Lion for eats. The food went down well and the rhubarb gin even more so.
