okay, how have i never heard about the reason buck moved to la and became a firefighter before????? they were really making this man that bisexual that whole time????????
literally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! he is in peru being a bartender and a guy comes up to his bar and buck blushes and smiles and flirts and the guy says omg you should come to la with us, we have this big house, we all live together, and buck says đĽ°đ¤ and he does!!!! he literally does follow this man to la and move in with him and his friends and then years later he literally gives this same man a child. like how down bad do you have to be over one interaction in a peruvian beach bar and a few months of being roommates
When Abby doesn't believe him about the catfisher, Buck breaks up with her and returns home to Connor and the frat house and gets a happy ending he deserves.
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the
Organization for Transformative Works
***
After the hell of the catfish situation, and figuring out what the hell was going on, he realized that Abby not believing him was just another sign that maybe he wasnât meant for a relationship. He never shouldâve taken Bobbyâs advice.Â
Instead, he shouldâve kept things to himself, and been fine with the way things were going. Thereâs nothing wrong with a single man having consensual sex with multiple partners. Not if both parties are just fine with it.
Still, itâd been hard to go back to Connorâs with his tail between his legs.Â
Thereâs a part of him that liked dating and phone calls and having a connection beyond sex. In fact, itâs something that he knows that he wants, but isnât sure after everything with Abby that heâd ever get that.
Heâd been worried that Connor wouldnât let him back, but Connor had been thrilled to see him. Giving him a hug, which is something heâs been a bit starved for.Â
âWelcome back, the others are gone for the night, and youâll have to bunk with me, but donât worry, Iâll keep my hands to myself.â
Buckâs eyes widen. He knows that he and Connor kind-of sort-of had a thing and that he more or less abandoned that kind-of sort-of thing for Abby because of Bobbyâs advice and here he is, welcoming him back and willing to share his room with him.
âYouâd really⌠do that? Let me share your room after I â you know?â
âBuck,â Connor says, softly. âYou told me what happened with this chick, and how you were kind of pushed into it by others, I am not going to give you BS about it. As long as youâre cool sharing a room, I am, too.â
âYouâre the best!â Buck says, throwing his arms around him. âDonât know what Iâd do without you.â
âLuckily, youâll never have to find out!â
***
Buckâs been sharing a room with Connor again for nearly two weeks. The hurt of the situation with Abby, who hadnât believed in him and then took off anyway (and wouldâve left without even a goodbye), had faded away to him enjoying his return to being at Connorâs house. Itâs like feeling like heâs come home.Â
In a way, it feels like he took a detour on this weird dating road and while on his way back to where he was meant to be.
There was just one problem.
They werenât dating and he doesnât know how to change that.
Like what if he says something and Connor says no? Theyâre literally sharing a bed, it would be so awkward.Â
âYouâre thinking too hard, and I canât sleep,â Connor says, rolling over to face Buck, whoâs laying on his back. âWhatâs wrong?â
âI â I am afraid to tell you.â
âWell, youâll just have to push through that like the big brave firefighter you are and tell me anyway or neither of us is getting any sleep tonight â and if that happens, Iâm saying the Q word right before your shift.â
âYou wouldnât be that cruel,â Buck says, knowing that Connor wouldnât actually curse him like that.
âIâd be tempted to, now tell me.â
âI think I screwed up.â
âWith Abby?â Connor asks, rolling his eyes. âDude, I told you. She doesnât deserve you. You deserve someone who was all in and not some chick that wanted a boytoy when you were finally ready for something serious. You deserve better.â
Buck thinks about countering or maybe just focusing on something else. Instead, he blurts, âLike you? Because I â I know I screwed up. I never shouldâve gotten involved with Abby, and we had something here and I â I was following mistaken advice⌠following this concept of a relationship by a man who hasnât dated in this century. At least, I donât think he has. He mightâve been dating still in the early 2000s, I donât know. The point is⌠I never shouldâve left or let things just be sex when I knew I wanted more and I just â I know this is awkward since we share a room if you say no, but I wanna date you and I wanna do it right and ââ
He's cut off by a kiss.Â
The first kiss with Connor in nearly five months, and itâs like a warm sense of home. Of being where he belongs with whom he belongs. Itâs perfect.Â
Connor breaks it off and says, âI love your blathering, but I really wanted to do that since you suggested me.â
Buck chuckles. âYeah, maybe I shouldâve gone with just a kiss first, but you know, we never talked about before⌠and ââ
âWhy donât we forget about before?â Connor suggests. âStart over, as an actual couple?â
âAs long as I get to plan some dates that we actually get to go on.â
âDeal.â
***
The next couple of months pass by in a blur of happiness for Buck. Heâs gotten his shield, heâs got a boyfriend that loves him, things are way better than they ever were with Abby, until he meets the new guy.Â
Heâs not terribly happy with him since it feels like he doesnât have to prove himself the way that Buck has. The way he jumps in like he doesnât think Buck can do his job, and the support he has from the team while Buck struggled. Itâs irritating, and kind of makes him want to punch him and Chim, who apparently told Eddie that Buck was living in Abbyâs place pretending to be with her when she actually broke up with him ⌠like what?Â
He was just about set everyone straight when his phone rings: Connor.
He turns away, answering the phone with, âHey babe.â
âHey, I didnât catch you at a bad time, did I?â
âUh, no, just working out. Probably saved me from doing something stupid.â
Like decking Chimney, although Buckâs never been a violent person heâs sorely tempted. He can hear Chimney jeering that itâs a full-time job doing that.
âThatâs great because I have a woman here ââ
âIf itâs another one of the catfisherâs victims, I am going to question how the hell she got our address.â
âItâs not,â Connor states. âShe, uh, she says that sheâs your sister.â
âMy what?â Buck asks, wide eyed and confused. He hadnât heard from Maddie in years and sheâs just at his house thatâs two thousand miles from Hershey and out of the blue. Itâs insane.
âYeah, thatâs what I said. She hasnât answered anything from you in three years and suddenly shows up unannounced. I mean, who does that?â
Buck laughs. âClearly, she does. Are you sure itâs her?â
âPositive. Iâve seen the photo from your eighteenth birthday and ⌠she had the post cards and Christmas cards and âŚâ
âShe hasnât changed much, then?â Buck asks, smiling slightly. Heâd been worried about her given his reservations about Doug. âWhat about â is she alone?â
âShe is and she wonât talk about anything other than to ask to use our shower and when you might return.â
âThat makes sense.â They were always taught to keep dirty laundry to themselves, and sheâs never met Connor, so why would she trust him? âTell her Iâll be home soon. Shifts almost over anyway, and I donât want her to feel awkward with our housemates or you since sheâs never met any of you.â
âShe seems a little skittish, honestly. Given what you told me that you were worried about ⌠I think itâs perfect timing that no one else is here right now, but you never know here â we all come and go at weird hours, so the sooner you come home the better.â
Buck laughs. âYeah, we do. Look, uh, thanks for letting me know.â
âIâm your babe, Iâm supposed to tell you things.â
âYouâre hilarious.â
âDonât you know it. But seriously, I would never let you come home to a surprise like this.â
âThank you for that. I love you; Iâll see you soon.â
âLove you, too.â
He hangs up the phone and takes a deep breath before turning around to go talk to Bobby. Thereâs less than an hour left and some of B Shift is already here, so he should be fine to head out early.Â
He vaguely hears Chimneyâs: âWhat was that about?â
As he walks passed him, and thinks that maybe he shouldnât respond, but then, this is a chance to make a point.
âNone of your business. Especially when you go around spreading lies about me to new people and old hands, clearly,â Buck states, firmly. âMy private life is none of your business, so back off.â
He doesnât wait for a response, going straight to Bobby and then taking off within a few minutes. He only hopes that he can help Maddie through whatever sheâs going through to just suddenly show up on his doorstep.
***
When he gets home, despite knowing to expect her, heâs still a little stunned to see her. Sheâs sitting nervously at the counter, away from Connor, who is trying to not act all awkward on the other end of the counter.Â
Heâs clearly been trying to engage her in conversation, but as Connor had said, sheâs acting skittish and uncertain. It makes sense given what he suspects.
âEvan!â Maddie says, getting up the second she sees him come through the door.Â
He tosses his bag on the floor and opens his arms for her hug, which she doesnât hesitate to give him. âIt really is you.â
âYeah, yeah, I, uh, really needed to see you.â
âWell, Iâm here. Youâre safe.â
He knows that heâs presuming something he probably shouldnât, but heâs been worried about her for years and heâs seen things that has made it worse.
âYou know?â
âIâve suspected.â
Maddie lets go of him and sits back down at the counter. âI didnât want you to know.â
âYou donât have to protect me, Maddie,â Buck offers as he moves to kiss Connorâs cheek. âBy the way, I know youâve met, but this is my boyfriend, Connor.â
Maddie nods, a soft smile on her face. âHeâs been gushing about you since I got here and confirmed who I was.â
âIâd deny it, but when you have a hot firefighter boyfriend, who can resist?â Connor teases.  âAnd what Maddie has said amounts to some pretty fearless stories in your childhood. I swear you were born to be a firefighter.â
Buck laughs. âYeah, well, I told you a lot of them myself.â Then he leans over and stage-whispers to Maddie, âHe was obsessed with Hershey when we first met, convinced that it was where chocolate was born, and I must be cool for living there.â
Maddie laughs. âSo, when did you learn he wasnât cool?â
âHey!â Buck yells, playfully annoyed.Â
âSometime after he followed me home,â Connor teases.
âYou invited me.â
âI did, best decision I ever made.â
Buck kisses his cheek again, and says, âBut we should really be focusing on you, Maddie.â
Maddieâs eyes dart between them, and Connor can pick up what she isnât saying. âMy shift starts soon, so Iâll just head out now. Derekâs room is thankfully already cleaned from when he moved out last week. So, youâre welcome to it.â
Maddie blinks. âDonât you have to consult your other roommates?â
âItâs Connorâs house, officially. His parents moved down to Florida when they retired, so heâs technically the one that gets to decide ââ
â- but weâre a family here, so we wouldâve worked something out anyway,â Connor assures her. âYouâre welcome to stay as long as you like.â
Maddie has tears in her eyes as she moves to hug Connor. âThank you. I knew he found something special when he left Peru, but I just didnât realize how special.â
âBuckâs pretty special himself, he was bound to find us eventually.â
He gives Buck a hug and a kiss, before leaving the two siblings alone.Â
âIâm glad you were able to find what you were looking for,â Maddie says. âYou were lost for so long and nowâŚâ
âI was lost because there was a lot that I didnât know, I was lost because I was unwanted and unloved, and I was lost because I didnât have anyone to lead me where I needed to go. You gave me a way out â a way to go on a journey to find myself, and that journey led me to Peru and Connor led me here. I joined the Fire Academy, learned a lot of things about myself, and Iâm in the best place I can be. Happy, loved and wanted.â
Maddieâs eyes are filled with unshed tears. âI loved you, Evan. I wanted you, Evan, but I let Doug ruin everything between us.â
âHe hasnât ruined everything,â Buck assures her. âBecause youâre here. You were brave enough to leave and you came to me.â
He pauses, then decides that he should tell her he knows about a secret in their lives that she probably knows and couldnât tell him, but itâs important to be honest.
âIt was never you. I didnât feel unloved and unwanted by you, Maddie. I knew that you loved me, and you tried to be there for me. Taking care of me until you went off to college and even a little when you came back for holidays and then, permanently. I always ran to you because I knew that you cared about me. Mom and Dad, they never did. They wanted me to save Daniel, and when I didnât, they didnât want me anymore. They had this constant reminder of what I failed for them, and they didnât want me around. It didnât matter what I did, the closest thing I got to attention was when I was hurt. It made me reckless and careless and like my life doesnât matter as much as others. If I could save someone but it came at losing my life? Well, I didnât think I had anyone that would miss me too much.â
âYou know about Daniel? You know what they did?â
Buck nods. âI do. They contacted the doctors in Hershey to get my complete medical records when I tried to join the SEALs. Let me tell you that was an eye-opener. My point is â itâs not on you that I grew up like that. I know you cared, but we went longer and longer without contact and â I understand why. Doug was never the good guy that he wanted people to believe, and he knew I saw through him. That the older I got the more likely you would be to believe me. Especially if he was hurting you. Thatâs why he interfered, right? Why you stopped calling?â
Maddie nods. âI, uh, after we got married and mom and dad cut contact with me, I refused to stop talking to you â Doug didnât like it. But I kept pushing anyway because ⌠I knew about Daniel and why our parents were the way they were â Iâm not excusing them, but I knew it hurt. I wanted to keep my promise to you. Which is why I was saving up money to run. Why when you asked me to go with you ⌠at first, I said yes. Doug figured me out and I was⌠hurt pretty bad, so I left you the note and told you to go and be free. Find a happiness that I didnât think I could findâŚâ
Buck covers his face with his hands. âYouâve suffered all these years because I took your escape?â
âNo, I gave it to you. I wasnât ready to leave, I was so afraid, and I couldnât stand the thought of Doug finding us and hurting you because of me⌠but I â you kept sending those post cards and Christmas cards. Telling me about your life, reminding me that I could come to you, and I finally found myself brave enough to leaveâŚâ
âAnd now, youâre here, and I can protect you. We can protect you,â Buck assures her. âMy friends here, and Connor, have been like a family to me, and theyâll do the same for you. Do you have anyone that can send proof of what he did to you? Iâve got a friend in the LAPD; she can help you figure out how to make it better.â
Maddie looks uncertain. âI â well, I wasnât planning on involving anyone else. I just wanted to find a safe place to land. I donât think Doug even knows where you are, and you moved around a lotâŚâ
âIâve been on TV, involved in some difficult rescues that got TV attention, Doug knows my name even if he doesnât know where I am. He can figure it out pretty quickly. Itâs better to do whatever we can to protect you. The guys here â we all have wacky schedules, so itâs easy for one of us to be here protecting you if youâre at the house, but we need something legal to protect you â and Athena will be great. We didnât get along at first, but sheâs warmed up to me.â
Maddie still looks uncertain as she asks, âWhat did you do to her?â
âYelled at her because she wanted to rescue the girl that flushed her baby down the toilet,â Buck says. âItâs a long story, but the little girl â she was adopted by a loving couple.â
âAnd the girl that did that?â
âDonât know, donât care. She almost killed her baby when there are safe haven laws. She didnât have to do that. She needed care, but I was biased against her, and Athena was biased for her because of her teenage daughter. We butted heads, but weâre better now.â
Maddie bites her lip. âAnd youâre sure that she can help me?â
Buck nods. âSheâs a badass Sergeant, and sheâs got a good heart. She can help you, Iâm sure of it.â
âOkay. Just⌠let me think about it?â
âOf course.â
***
The first shift after the phone call with Connor about Maddie, Buck anticipates Chimneyâs hassling and trying to figure out Buckâs secrets so he can mock him about it, but he can avoid him for the most part. Itâs Eddie â the new guy â who Buck is more worried about.Â
He doesnât like him showing him up and claiming that he doesnât know that heâs implying Buck canât do his job. He shouldnât constantly jump in and act like he knows better when heâs been here for like ten seconds.
And to think that he thought that he knew what was going on in Buckâs life and that he was âtaking it outâ on him, rather than anything he did wrong was bullshit. Buck had spent so long proving himself and itâs just a given that Eddieâs right about things, like heâs the experienced firefighter.Â
It stings and even talking about it with Connor and Maddie hadnât made it easier.Â
But heâs gotta figure something out since he feels like heâll be dropped for the âsilver starâ and as much as heâs annoyed of late, he really loves his team. He doesnât⌠he canât stand the thought of leaving the 118âŚ
And just like heâs always been taught⌠he had to shut down his feelings on the matter in order to stay.
Heâs just not sure how he could do that, he thinks as he changes into his uniform. He supposes he could think of Connor and his gushing, or their friends and roommates welcoming Maddie like sheâs one of them already, or maybe he could talk to him or Hen or Bobby about how heâs feeling. Heâs sure that Henâs got a better idea of how to talk him through this. Sheâs the one he goes to for advice anyway.
Before he could decide, Eddie comes into the locker room. Theyâre alone, so Buckâs not sure if he should just ignore him or take the chance to talk it out.Â
He focuses on buttoning his shirt, still undecided when Eddie says, âIâm sorry.â
âSorry?â Buck questions.
âI realized that I made a bad first impression. I was used to being in charge and taking the lead in the army, and I wanted to make a good first impression, based on the teasing in the truck, I made a snap judgement on you that I shouldnât have. And I wanted to impress Bobby, so I spoke up when I shouldnât have. Your way wouldâve been right and itâs how the academy teaches it, but I wanted to be seen as better and that wasnât fair.â
Buck blinks. âIt was intentional based on Chimneyâs comments?â
âYes, and I shouldnât have done that. And then, I talked to him, and he fed me some clear bullshit based on what we overheard in the gym the other dayâŚâ
âMy personal business is none of yours or Chimneyâs business, but yeah, he clearly fed you some bullshit,â Buck states, plainly. Heâs pissed that Chimneyâs comments affected things on the team like this.
âYouâre right,â Eddie admits. âAnd again, Iâm sorry. Could we maybe start over? I donât want my partner to hate me, and I really want this to work.â
He offers his hand and Buck knowing that itâs for the best takes it. âYeah, letâs start over. Iâm Evan Buckley, but I go by Buck.â
Eddie grins. âIâm Edmundo Diaz, but I go by Eddie.â
Buck laughs. âSo, it is a nickname?â
âIt is,â Eddie states, smiling. âYou just guessed the wrong name and I was so thrown off at the insistence of a nickname that I didnât think to correct you.â
âWow. Well, you got me for sure.â
***
Despite knowing that Maddieâs decided to talk to the police and theyâll hopefully be able to address the Doug issue, it still takes a couple of weeks before sheâs willing to talk to Athena and then, she insists that she wants to meet her outside of the police station, which means asking Bobby if Maddie could come to the firehouse to meet Athena for the first time.Â
He wanted to convince her about other locations (mainly because he doesnât want gossip going around about his life â Chimney has made it his mission to find out everything he can about Buckâs secrets), but she insisted and heâs a little nervous.
âHey, you donât have to explain much beyond sheâs your sister,â Eddie offers.
Theyâd become closer in the last couple of weeks, meeting his kid and introducing him to Carla had led to an actual friendship. He seems to respect Buckâs privacy and heâs quite happy with that.
âYeah, but heâs like a dog with a bone. Heâs been incessant trying to figure out whatâs going on my life,â Buck complains. âI just â I donât know.â
âIâm sure itâll be fine. Iâll have your back and Bobby does, too.â
Heâs right. When he had to explain to Bobby everything so they could set up Maddie and Athena, Bobby had been quite the supportive almost-dad that he sometimes acts like with Buck, and Buck had been relieved. Especially because Bobby seemed quite proud of Buck for moving on with Connor and not pining for Abby like he thought (heâd been feeling guilty for encouraging Buck with Abby given what she did to him and worried that his advice was hurting Buck more than helping).
âThanks.â
With that, he suddenly sees Connor and Maddie entering the station and grins. No matter what, heâs thrilled to see them.Â
He greets them both with a hug and kiss on the cheek, introduces Eddie and then says, âAthenaâs already upstairs.â
They both nod and follow Buck up the stairs.Â
Buck leads them over to Bobby and Athena and introduces everyone. Athena focuses in on Maddie, while Bobby says, with a smile, âItâs nice to meet the man who brought Buck to us.â
Connor flushes. âWell, all I did was invite him home with me. He didnât have to come, but Iâm glad he did.â
âWell, we are, too. Buckâs the heart of this firehouse, and we wouldnât be what we are without him.â
Buck flushes as Chim asks, âI thought that was me, Cap?â
âYou know, I thought it was, but then, I realized, Buckâs the one that got me to let down my walls and let other people into my life,â Bobby says. âHe helped Eddie with his kid, and he even softened up Athena.â
âHey, heâs just lucky that his heroics let me realize that he was absolutely right,â Athena states before turning back to Maddie.
Hen teases about something else Buck did, and it continues for a few minutes before Bobby says, âThe point is, weâre lucky to have him and youâre the reason heâs here.â
Connor grins as he kisses Buckâs cheek. âYeah, well, I couldnât resist. Buckâs pretty amazing.â
Just then, the alarm goes off and Bobby says, âYou can be man behind this time,â eyeing his guests. âIn case they need you.â
âThanks, Bobby.â
***
The chat with Athena ended up going well, and she did convince Maddie that the station was necessary, but the point was that everything was on the up and up.Â
Buckâs got his sister back (and is able to protect her), heâs feeling pretty good at work (the teasing earlier and being called the heart had done wonders for him and the way heâd been feeling lately) and heâs got the worldâs most perfect boyfriend.
Life couldnât get any better.
He only wished that he hadnât listened to Bobbyâs mistaken advice in the first place, but heâs glad heâs here now. Living his happily ever after with his boyfriend.Â
