Seeing so many Tiktoks of people dressing up for work in Halloween and them being the ONLY ones doing it is making me beg for workplaces to start embracing whimsy again, especially during the October-December months.
At my place, during my early years of starting there, this time of year was my absolute favorite time. We would decorate our offices and dress up in such elaborate costumes and walk around the building to other floors and departments to trick or treat and see how they decorated their offices. I remember one year, one floor of our building converted it into a haunted circus maze funhouse and when I tell you THEY killed it, they killed it.
During Christmas, we would all decorate and do a massive breakfast and lunch potluck with the ENTIRE building. A whole building gift exchange. People would randomly go around and sing Christmas carols. We would have a massive snowball fight (except we're in Florida, so the only snowball fights we had consisted of giant cotton balls being flung at each other) Like, it was such a fun time. We would all come together, even if we didn't work together directly, just to have fun and communicate and get to know each other. It was a fun way to learn about other people and their jobs, but also put faces to names we may only see in emails or on IM chats.
Like yeah, work in an inevitable part of our life and for most of us, it's not what we want to be doing with our time. But I hope that one day, the whimsy and fun is brought back to work.
I feel so left behind social media despite growing with it. Like can we just go back to early social media app days when we would post just because we could.
