Pukwudgies: Trickster Spirits of the Bridgewater Triangle The forests and swamps of southeastern Massachusetts are home to one of America’s most enduring paranormal legends: the Pukwudgie. These beings, rooted in Wampanoag tradition, are said to be small, humanoid figures with gray skin, large ears, and glowing eyes. Their name alone carries a strange resonance, evoking both whimsy and menace.

Origins in Wampanoag Folklore The Wampanoag people tell stories of Pukwudgies as spirits who once lived in harmony with humans. Over time, however, they grew jealous and hostile. In some versions, they were enemies of the cultural hero Maushop, a giant who protected the Wampanoag. When Maushop drove them away, the Pukwudgies turned vengeful, luring people into the woods, causing harm, and sometimes leading them to their deaths.

Appearance and Abilities Descriptions vary, but Pukwudgies are usually depicted as two to three feet tall, with troll-like features. They are said to wield magical powers, including:

The Bridgewater Triangle Connection The Bridgewater Triangle, a 200-square-mile region of southeastern Massachusetts, is infamous for paranormal activity. Within its borders lies the Freetown-Fall River State Forest, a hotspot for Pukwudgie sightings. Visitors report being followed, pushed, or even attacked by unseen forces.
