Erich von Daniken died yesterday at the age of 90. He's the person who created the "ancient astronauts" theory, which he conceived after he lived in Egypt as a young man and just felt Egyptians couldn't have built Egypt. His works (which were full of plagiarism from other writers) were a noxious brew of insipid "just asking question"ism and overt racism, pointing to a dozen random artifacts with some kind of anomaly, real or imagined - none of them strange enough to be compelling on their own, but meant to overwhelm you with the number of accusations. And then saying only white people from space could have done this
But it's unbelievable how much influence he had at his peak, and especially in Germany. Setting aside his influence on fiction (namely Stargate) he had his own theme park. For three years.
The documentary based on his book was nominated for the Oscar for Best Documentary!
