yeah i obviously do not know the intricate details of what goes on internally at dreamworks but whoever manages the dw youtube just does whatever it takes to get views. i don’t blame them. it’s marketing 101 lmfao and i doubt they really have a very deep knowledge of the show itself (like how they tagged kl on keith’s vlog when it had nothing to do with kl itself). 

First off:  Thank you.  For being polite about it.  I completely expected pitchforks and anger for stating my mind (which commonly goes against the grain, but there are things that just aren't worth picking a fight over).

If I’m not mistaken, and please correct me if I’m wrong, people were upset because of the stereotypical ‘black people are gangs and thugs and bad’ vibe going on as well as Marinette’s line ‘please don’t kill me’.  And that’s upsetting, there’s nothing wrong with being upset by that.

But both of those things are, I think, heavily dependent on the stereotype that ‘black people are bad’.  We come into the situation as Marinette does, wary, upset, possibly not trusting them.  What I think is wrong is that people are taking an initial snapshot and using that to attack Thomas.

If that were the end, I’d be ticked, too.  If that were all there was, that they were black thugs who would kill Marinette if given the chance, then I’d say that’s perpetuating stereotype and not cool.

But they clothed her instead. They’re taking medical supplies that they don’t seem to need.  Doesn’t that seem a bit odd?  Why would bad guys help our hero?  Why would bad guys take stuff that would be necessary for a community?

To me, it’s like saying “Chloe is bad and that’s all she’ll ever be and nothing could ever make me like her”. Which, fair if she stops right where she is, but you’ve got to see that she’s a character that can grow and have a backstory and be sympathetic.  These guys are the same, I think.  What I’m hoping is happening is that people who want to see them as bad guys read it, and then Thomas turns it around on them.

If this doesn’t happen, I will be ticked.  If they don’t grown and show the humanity I’m hoping for, I’ll be ticked.  But I don’t know the context, and it irritates me when people will immediately hate/attack him for this without knowing the whole story.

Be pissed at the initial representation if you must, but also please don’t lose sight of the fact that these are characters and are there for a reason.  I’m hoping that it is to show the kindness and humanity that these people have.  They’re not flat, they’re not stock characters, and I’m sure they will grow to show people who wouldn’t think so initially that these people are people and worthy of being seen and heard.

What I’m saying is learn the context, and if the context doesn’t work for you or still conflicts with SJW, then debate it.
