hi hi hello i've just started tearing through run aground and i caught a brief mention of the "Combinant Northeast Territory" in chapter 6 and got so so curious. is that Northern New England? or just the northeast as a whole?? how fares the former vermont-maine-new hampshire trifecta in this weird world??? are they subject to weird italian turf wars? have they finally escaped to canada? is any of this remotely relevant? i'm asking for personal reasons if you couldn't tell

RE: the CNT, it mostly lives as one of the many little territories and areas roughed out on a map of the (ex)-US that I keep in my reference docs, just to help give the world more...circumstance? To make it feel more lived-in! Which is to say; we don't have the goings-on in every place mentioned nailed entirely down. But!
The CNT as I have it outlined on my ref map is more of a broad area name than a strictly bordered territory; a little further West than you're imagining, over the Ohio/Indiana/Western Pennsylvania area. They'd be the Fleet's southernmost neighbors on the lower shores of the lake. Its makeup is a lot of local-level governments and farming combines, and a fair number of native-run resettlement programs, and of course wealthy assholes with private spits of land.
Their eastern border is getting slowly chipped at by their neighbors in New England, who I shorthanded as "Roma Nuova/The Northeast Patrician Protectorate". They're doing a lot of finding the richest and most influential people in an area, figuring out who their least shitty sons are, and offering them a good education and stylish vibes and Catholicism and also swords. Sol rubbed elbows with a LOT of Country Billionaire Nepobaby Failsons in the course of becoming a Rome-Sponsored Sword Daddy, to his disgust and also theirs.
I do note that past me labeled the northmost tip of the East coast "Peninsular Concord" which I'd imagine used to involve a lot more of the states that currently make up New England, but is now mostly Maine stubbornly hanging on--plus whatever deals they've worked out with the Montreal/Nova Scotia/Quebec City area around them. What's going on with Canada, and how much Maine is now hanging with them...to be determined if/when it comes up, I suppose! Weirdly even though all things are equally fictional I feel less confident making proclamations about Future Canada lol.

YES i think a big difference is that a lot of fictional books are catholic in the sense of like.. they want to convert you. or at least the author thinks catholicism is the Right Way and so the narrative holds all of these not-so-subtle religious messages about salvation and god’s love and lion jesus or whatever. the locked tomb definitely has catholicism baked into its structure and narrative but it also centers on the negative parts of the catholic church - imperialism and the crusades, religious trauma, bigotry, etc etc etc in a way that’s very refreshing to read. gideon is space jesus and that’s not a good thing!
