The actor Bourvil was celebrated in France but not so much on this side of the Atlantic, so my first glimpse of him was La Traversée de Paris, a film also known as Four Bags Full, The Crossing of Paris, The Trip Across Paris, and Pig Across Paris. It begins with newsreel footage of German troops occupying Paris in 1942, so it strikes a more serious tone than it eventually takes. Bourvil plays Marcel Martin, a black market smuggler tasked with carrying meat from a pig that’s slaughtered at the start of the movie while Martin plays loud music on an accordion to cover its squeals. He’s responsible for transporting two suitcases filled with pork across the city to Montmartre, but when the other smuggler fails to show up, he has to accept the aid of a stranger, Grandgil (Jean Gabin), who agrees to carry the other two valises. Grandgil, however, wants the butcher, Jambier (Louis de Funès), to pay much more than the originally agreed-upon amount for his services, and blackmails him into accepting, to the consternation of Martin. The task is perilous, given the vigilance of the French police and the German occupying troops, so the film wavers between thriller and comedy – the latter particularly when some stray dogs pick up the scent of what’s in the suitcases. It ends up being a tale of the odd-couple relationship between Grandgil and Martin, as well as a picture of what Parisians went through during the occupation. The film was controversial when it was released because it's a warts-and-all depiction of black-marketeers and the Résistance, downplaying the heroism without denying the genuine risks they took. Eventually, Grandgil and Martin are caught by the Germans, but Grandgil is released because the officer in charge recognizes him as a famous artist. Martin is sent to prison, but the two are reunited after the war when Grandgil recognizes him at a train station as the porter carrying his luggage – a rather obvious, and somewhat sour, bit of irony.

« La Cuisine au beurre » est une comédie française sortie en 1963, réalisée par Gilles Grangier. Le film marque un événement populaire car il réunit pour la première fois en tête d’affiche Fernandel et Bourvil, deux monuments du cinéma comique français aux styles très différents. L’intrigue repose sur leur affrontement savoureux : un restaurateur marseillais exubérant voit débarquer un cuisinier normand rigide, ancien propriétaire de son établissement. De ce choc entre Provence et Normandie naît une comédie de caractères fondée sur les dialogues, les accents et la gastronomie, qui connut un grand succès public et reste aujourd’hui un classique du cinéma français des années 1960. L’actrice visible sur la pochette est Claire Maurier. Elle tient le principal rôle féminin du film La Cuisine au beurre (1963), où elle incarne la jeune femme qui sert de lien entre les deux personnages interprétés par Fernandel et Bourvil. Actrice de cinéma et de théâtre, elle est restée associée à ce film, l’un de ses rôles les plus connus auprès du grand public.
La bande originale du film est composée par Jean Marion et paraît également en 1963 sous la forme d’un EP 45 tours sur le label Bel Air. Ce disque propose plusieurs pièces instrumentales directement tirées du film : le générique, il« Martigues », « Sentiment », « Les filets de pêche », « Valse de la cuisine au beurre » et « Petit bal ». La musique, légère et imagée, accompagne l’action avec élégance et accentue le contraste régional au cœur du scénario, tout en restant typique des musiques de comédies françaises de cette période.
Concernant la valeur de l’exemplaire présenté, un EP 45 tours original Bel Air de 1963, en bon à très bon état (pochette propre avec légères marques du temps et disque correct), se négocie généralement entre 15 et 30 €.
