Book of Night is the adult debut by Holly Black. I would call this urban fantasy/horror. There is a girl, Charlie, with a past. There are people, called gloamists, who can manipulate their shadows. There are people without shadows and shadows without people. (They’re Blights and are dangerous) Charlie has to find a missing book or bad things will happen. The story and background building took a while to get into. The final act was better and there was a surprising reveal. I kept thinking of Peter Pan (Wendy sewing his shadow) but there was never any mention of that. I was also reminded of The Book of M (where everyone loses their shadow) The whole story felt weird and I had some interesting dreams. 💭 Read the acknowledgments to see some interesting comments from Black about the writing process for this book.
