Pre-Reading Thoughts

True crime and paranormal stories have a natural pull—there’s something about knowing that a story is rooted in reality that makes it feel that much more unsettling. A collection of fifty short accounts sounded ideal for reading in small bursts, especially when the mood calls for something darker between lighter reads.

Post-Reading

As I thought… This works well as a pick-up-and-read collection. The short format makes it easy to read a story or two at a time, and the range of topics—from hauntings to unsolved mysteries to disturbing crimes—keeps things varied.

It surprised me by… Just how genuinely unsettling some of the stories are. Like most collections, the impact varies from story to story, but a few of them linger in the mind long after you’ve finished reading. The real-life angle adds an extra chill that makes the creepiest entries particularly effective.

I just finished the book Grief Eater by Emma Osborn and while it doesn’t come out until June 1, 2026 - You need to make note of this one.

Grief Eater has a new take on zombies. They are able to retain their memories and thoughts but are driven by their hunger much in the way animals with high prey drives can’t control that aspect of themselves. Additionally, they can recount their “food’s” memories as well. Which brings in a whole new level of heartbreak for the reader even if the main character states these things plainly as it’s happening as the reader gets to experience the implication, even if she doesn’t. It’s a new take I haven’t experienced before, and I thought it was fresh in a way I didn’t think zombie books or movies could come up with at this point.

The reader is thrown right in Kristina’s life as she is turned and so we are along for the ride of her processing her life’s trauma as an queer teen into young adult and what that means for her life and mission as a new zombie. The writing is well done and while it’s not a long book, the story is told poignantly. I really felt emotion for Kristina. She felt real. Her family is not accepting of her and it’s heartbreaking. Her journey is satisfying and the ending is prefect.

If you’re looking for a fresh new look on zombies, this is it! I highly recommend.

This is one of my top 20 books for this year. I was highly anticipating this release when it came out. I am so glad I was able to snag the B&N edition.

My journey with Stephen Graham Jones started rocky; Night of the Mannequins was a bit too hyped for me and it was okay. The first time I read My Heart is A Chainsaw, I didn’t expect and vibe with his story telling and the writing style. However, The Only Good Indians was good, and I loved I Was A Teenage Slasher. I re-read My Heart is A Chainsaw and loved it the second time around. So of course I was looking forward to this one.

I love Western horror and Vampire horror- so this was a good blend of it. It’s told in modern day and journal entries.

If you love his books already, I’d recommend picking it up. I will say- if you really liked The Pallbearer’s Club and Horror Movie and I Was A Teenage Slasher, this book is up your alley.
