BMB RP: Better Left Unsaid
In which Halstead and C_K share a quiet moment until S_R shows up.
Starring: Halstead, C_K and S_R
Warnings: Language, sex mention, implications of abuse (those last two are unrelated).
*The last few guests are quietly ushered out of the door by Clerks or Breathers, depending on the state of said person. The Unwards busy themselves with cleaning and putting everything in its original place. After all, 08:00 tomorrow would just be another day in Fairco, not a trace of the festivities to be seen save for lingering effects of alcohol, appetite or even puppy love.
*Chase stands away from the entrance, eyes still focussed and clear. With a curt wave or respectful bow she addresses the last clients. Her eyes wander around the room, the scene making it evident that Wards and copious amounts of alcohol aren't always the best combination. AGRIs in particular lean and lay sprawled across the entirety of Level 4; at least a handful have found their temporary sleeping quarters in the neighbourhood of the melon but there are visibly some Clerks and even Breathers who hadn't been counting their glasses.
*Amongst the fallen bodies, some still in the process of meeting the floor, she finds a few unexpected facesā¦
*C_K meet Chaseās eyes a little sheepishly, as he parts ways with an Agri with whom he had spent some quality time in the Projection Room. Grinning lopsidedly as he pulls his collar higher up to try and hide the blossoming bruise framed by bite marks on his neck. Adding a slight sway to his step and a stumble to his pace. Heād had enough Agri-brew to be tipsy, but is not as drunk as he seems. Luckily for C_Kās needs, no one as of yet had figured out his ruse.
[C_K] āello, Chase.
*Once Chase and C_K's eyes meet several lengthy seconds pass. Her eyes flit around the Level in alarm. She takes a step forward and another in hurried succession until the woman almost trots over towards the Ward, a warm glimmer of worry visible in her otherwise-cold eyes.
*Her arms reach out to him, upon contact finding his elbow and lower back to support him.
[Halstead] Seems like you've been having a good time, Seekay.
*Concern drips into her voice as she continues on, her hand squeezes his elbow tighter.
[Halstead] I didnāt see you much⦠Everything still fine?
*He feels a little bad in bringing Chase into his ruse, but there are too many people around still. And so he leans into the womanās side and clumsily presses a kiss to her hair.
[C_K] All fine! How are you? Was lookinā for you and not seen you anywheres!
*A lopsided grin.
[C_K] I like your dress. Yālook purdy.
*A sigh of relief visibly relaxes Chase immediately upon hearing C_K's words. Her hand moves, laying it delicately against the side of his head and brushing the underside of his ear. The woman inspects his face and neck closely, shaking her head at the evidence of the bit of fun he'd just had. She smiles as the Ward shifts his weight slightly into her and gives her a smooch.
[Halstead] Mostly at Laurence's side⦠Might need a steel brush to get the feel of his fingers on my waist to go away.  Did some wandering around on my own.
*The comment of her dress makes her snort shortly. It's a harsh breath of air, the laughter dying in her throat to avoid eyes coming their way. Her hand now manipulating his collar into hiding the marks and shifting the tie around his neck to be slightly looser.
[Halstead] It's going away for a year, Seekay. Have a good long look.
*Her voice is sly, her eyes glimmering with amusement.
[Halstead] I'm sure you looked dashing before you so hastily dressed yourself mere minutes ago. But you do look better not wearing that uniform.
*She holds onto him for a little while longer before whipping her head around.
[Halstead] You don't feel all that stable⦠Perhaps we should get you back to bed or a benchā¦
[C_K] Trying to get me into bed, Halstead? Iāll have you know Iām a lady and you need to buy me dinner first.
*C_K is comfortable under her hands. Not even the slightest flinch or tightening of muscles as she checks him over. He at least has the decency to blush when she mentioned his⦠roll around.
[C_K] Thought it was high time I relieved a little tension.
*Another wide grin and he looks her over in the least subtle way possible.
[C_K] Gonna miss you, dress.
[Halstead] I think you've had your activity for the night. Besides I'm not gonna stain you by making you⦠What do they call it? Oh yeah⦠āDreg-diveā.
*She scrunches up her face in a teasing manner before patting his face gently.
[Halstead] It's far more healthy than getting punched or punching a semi-solid object.
*As the Ward eyes her up she shakes her head slightly, a gentle laugh betraying her good mood. The woman moves to his side, always ensuring at least one of her limbs is keeping him upright and somewhat stable.
[Halstead] Lean on me, dear. I think I can manage getting you back to your bed⦠And very much -leaving you there- alone without further interference.
[C_K] Dunno why people think Dreggi⦠Dreglanders are bad⦠Youāre from the Dreglands and -youāre- nice.
*He does as he is told and leans against her, but is mindful not to place his full weight on her as someone as drunk as he seemed might do.
[C_K] Yāve always been nice tāme, Chase. Youāre a good lady.
*He grins impishly at her and wraps one arm around her waist. C_K figures that if he was going to carry on with this charade, he might as well do something that only drunkards could get away with.
[C_K] Dance with me a bit and Iāll go to bed like a good boy.
[Halstead] Someone's got to play the baddie. If it's not Aberrants, it's us.
*She takes a step forwards and suddenly feels his arm around her waist; she flinches for a second relating the action back to Laurenceās parade of false-familiarity, but settling down again as it's C_K. The woman eyes him from the side, her one brow raised as she stops in her tracks.
[Halstead] You tiny little deviant⦠Good boys aren't this naughty.
*Her shoulders slump for a brief minute, looking around once more like a deer in hunting season to ensure they weren't being watched. Her smile returns immediately as she looks back at him.
[Halstead] Fine⦠You'll owe me one, though.
*C_K notes the flinch and for a second is hurt by the implication. But he knows all too well who had -really- brought about that reaction. Ā The same hands that were too often on his own shoulders; an inescapable steer with more metaphorical steel in his touch. Ā He gives a kind look from under lowered lashes, before swiping it away with a wide grin.
[C_K] I think I owe you quite a few already, but weāll add this one to the list.
*His gaze follows hers as she checks around the room
[C_K] Hey⦠I wonāt keep you long, I promise. Iām not doing this to humiliate you, Chase. I know not everyone wants to be seen with Fairfaxās houndā¦
*A slight shrug as he sweeps her in a circle, arm around her waist pressing her closer and his other hand in hers.
*Chase becomes rigid upon hearing C_K's words. Her head shakes even before she speaks.
[Halstead] Seekay, dear! No! Please! That's not it at all⦠I'm just⦠scared. People might be watching. I don't want them to hurt you. Not again and especially not over me.
*Her panic is eased as C_K moves on. He is delicate with her and gentle, she follows his lead and closes the distance between them, hands intertwining as the other snakes over to settle between his shoulder blades.
[Halstead] Don't ever think that again, C_K. You're not his hound. If it were safer⦠If it were not Fairco it'd be all very different. I'm not ashamed of you. You're the one thing in this entire facility I'm not ashamed to associate myself with.
*She stresses the pause this time, adjusting to his given name. Her hands press tightly upon his skin and she lays her head gently against his shoulder for a few seconds.
*C_K feels⦠warm. Resisting the urge to wrap his arms further around Chase and hold her tight. It had been so, so long since heād had a friend. And having Chase⦠She was like a lifeline. Someone to turn to and someone to stick around for.
[C_K] Not gonna hurt me, Chase. After⦠Him... No one has ever hurt me like that again. I make sure they donāt. Wonāt let anyone else hurt you either. Would kill them. You know that, right?
*A lopsided little smile as the woman lie her head against his shoulder. The Ward noses at her hair and leans down to murmur in her ear.
[C_K] Weāre getting out of here, Chase⦠One day⦠Weāre getting out.
*Chase lifts her head up to stare up into his gentle eyes, realizing she only feels safe and secure when they are there. Knowing that without them there is an everlasting irritation but more importantly a nagging fear of every individual in this FAC, of the blue-eyed shadow that loomed over every single one of them.
[Halstead] We've survived so far⦠We'll survive this as well.
*More words weren't needed as she settled back against his body, feeling his head hovering above hers. The gentle rhythm soothing enough to rock her to sleep, but the complaining, nagging alertness doing all it could from making that a possibility.
[Halstead] Shhh⦠Not this⦠Not now. Don't give them the chance.
*Her voice is small and soft, nestled against him, her hand still brushing against his back.
[S_R] As if I didnāt feel nauseous enough.
*The Captain is picking his way carefully through the end-party debris, his scowl only deepening further as he glares at the entangled pair. Ā He looks pale under the more normal lights of the FAC, and rubs gloved knuckles down his chest half-idly as he changes direction, stalking towards Chase and C_K.
[S_R] This fucking farce is over for another year. Ā You can drop the show.
*That voice. Chase's warm cheeks pale instantly and her blood runs cold. Her fingers curl up briefly before shoving herself away from C_K with enough force to even stagger herself for a few steps. When finally she regains her posture her head whips to the source of her never-ending hate. Her soft, loving expression gone and replaced with her normal, cold eyes.
[Halstead] Fuck. Off.
*Her tone leaves little to the imagination, straining against the covering cloth with undiluted loathing. She looks again at C_K, a pang of guilt and sorrow pains her enough to show itself for a split-second. She steps back towards him, making an obvious barricade of herself between both Wards.
[Halstead] I'm sure your handler called you⦠Leave.
*C_K staggers back. He should have been ready for the inevitable shove, having heard his Captain speak. But he hadnāt prepared himself. Had allowed himself a snippet of normalcy and this was what it got him. It doesnāt even occur to him in that moment to mask the obvious hurt on his face.
[C_K] ā¦thereās no need to be such a Dreggie bitch about it.
*He regrets the words the second they left his lips, but they are out there now. The slight lowering of his head was the only apology given.*
[S_R] If youāve quite finished.
*He glares at Chase, meeting the cold stare, and looks her up and down, very deliberately.
[S_R] Iām sure you have a busy evening planned of rolling back up in garbage; I wouldnāt want to delay you.
*He moves to step around her, reaching towards C_Kās shoulder. Ā Not comfortingly, but with obvious annoyance.
[S_R] -Try- and point your fucking eyeballs in the same direction, will you? Ā Iām not scraping you off the damn staircase.
*Chase's voice catches in her throat, hearing the insult from C_K mimicking the feeling of a blade slipping between her ribs. She looks away from him; a slight slump of her shoulders the only outward sign of the insult having any effect on her.
[Halstead] ā¦you're drunk. We're getting you to bed to sleep this out.
*Having the āmissionā reinstated in her head makes it slightly easier to deal with the two-toned problem before her. She glares at him. Everything about S_R angers her. From the pathetic attempt to cover up his blonde bit of hair to his beard to the stupid fake sword dangling from his hip like a dick-joke waiting to happen.
[Halstead] The whole evening... You had the whole evening to ruin my evening and you choose now...
*Her eyes catch S_R's movements immediately and she moves quickly, feeling his fingers tap against her shoulder as she blocks his path. She raises one arm against him, fingers curling into a fist. The fabric clenches against the bones, making the metallic outlining clear as day.
[Halstead] He is not going with you, Essarr. Not like that he isn't.
*S_R has opened his mouth to give a retort to her earlier comment, but that seems to take him by surprise. Ā He blinks, a little unfocused, at the arm blocking his own. Ā Halstead didnāt generally bother with physical responses to his barbs.
[S_R] ...excuse me?
*He looks back at C_K, at the disarray of his clothing, and his lip curls.
[S_R] Whatever state heās going to be in tomorrow ā today ā isnāt going to be improved by your little love-in. Ā Now get that wind-up toy you call an arm out. Of my. Face.
*Well, C_K had already managed to forget his drunk act part way through dancing with Chase. When heād seemingly forgotten his little plan, he was unsure. But it was blown now.
[C_K] Enough!
*The Ward stands a little straighter. Rolling his shoulders back as he straightens his collar and tie and runs his fingers through unruly hair. Casting a guilty look towards Chase before glancing back at his Captain.
[C_K] Chase⦠Please let go of my Captain. Sir⦠Control yourself.
[Halstead] He is not going with you.
*She repeats her words, she stresses him as the issue, not the state C_K is in. When C_K finally regains himself she steps backwards, her eyes flitting from him back to S_R, too unsure to keep her eyes fully from the hot-blooded Captain. The mere word 'Captain' makes her scowl but she does as she is told, looking back at C_K for absolute confirmation.
[Halstead] I wanna be sure, Seekay⦠I won't have ā
*Her voice trails off as she remembers S_R standing mere inches away from her. It doesn't take long to find itself again, and be heard with a bite behind it.
[Halstead] ā¦another such captain.
[C_K] Heās not Him. Heāll never be Him.
*Words sure and voice firm. But his eyes soften a little. Guilt tightening his chest and feeling the churn in the pit of his stomach.
[C_K] Iām gonna be fine, Hals.
*Again, S_R had readied to retort to C_Kās comment ā control himself?Ā Really? Ā When the little idiot had been wrapped around bloody Halstead ā but found himself wrong-footed, hesitating as he looks between the two of them. Ā There was a weight in the air, something dark and -heavy- and for a moment he felt the hairs prickle on the back of his neck.Ā You know all about shadows, donāt you, Commander?Ā But this wasnāt one he knew.
*Or wanted to. Ā Or to have anything to do with, because it certainly wasnāt making the sharp-bass -slam- inside his temples, or the shivering ache beneath in his ribs any easier. Ā Fine. Ā Fuck this; fuck them; fuck -everything- about today and this ridiculous Chains-damned party.
[S_R] ...fine. Ā Do what you want. Ā Iām going to bed, and if R_Vās fucking someone in it, Iām going to your bed, and you can sleep in the sodding shower.
*Chase slowly turns towards C_K, her arm dropping to her side. She searches his face, trying to keep it neutral but finding it a near impossible task. S_R is temporarily forgotten. Some colour returns to her features even if her voice is icy.
[Halstead] Look me in the eyes and tell me you are absolutely sure this puffed-up toad won't one day lose his shit and begin it all over again, Seekay! Tell me the Blue-Eyed Bastard doesn't have his fingers so deep in that meek little head that it's an impossibility! His finger twitches and you are sure this puppet won't jerk?!
*This time, S_R does react. Ā Heās halfway to storming off anyway, but the jolt of fresh anger that Halsteadās words send across his face is ugly and sharp, and he swings back towards her, snarling.
[S_R] Keep that up and I'm going to feed you to your own fucking furnace, dregrat silks and all, you half-metal hag. Ā Now piss off.
[C_K] S_R is My Captain. He was just⦠He wasnāt even half the⦠He was just aā¦
*Teeth clench and his shoulders hunch in on themselves. The tell-tale muffled CLICK! CLICK! CLICK! of gloved fingertips snapping together. Tight around the eyes and face pale. Taking a deep breath and it is almost as if there was never any personality there to begin with.
[C_K] I think itās for the best if we all call it a night.
*Flinching slightly at S_Rās tirade, but managing to hold Chaseās gaze.
*S_R stops, glancing at C_K for a long, suddenly-quiet moment as the snarl drops, although there is little more than exhaustion on his face to replace it. Ā Then he spins wordlessly on his heel and is gone, stomping footsteps beating a fading rhythm from the nearby stairwell.
*The insults wash over her, she hardly reacts to them anymore, only her eyes peering angrily back at him.
[Halstead] Captains have the annoying trait of being predictableā¦
*The frightening realization that C_K trusts this Captain is enough confirmation for Chase. She merely takes a deep breath, looking at a point past C_K, unable to meet his eyes and keep her emotions to herself. As S_R storms off as quickly as he had appeared, her stance changes little. Tension is still visible within her throat and shoulders. Her one fist still not having unclenched itself.
[Halstead] Fine. This is fineā¦This Dreggie- bitch is going to her bed. I'm sure you'll find your way back to your room on your ownā¦
*C_K found himself at a loss. Cold sweat dripping down his spine as the shadow of a feral grin flickered in his mindās eye. Pulled in the direction of S_R, but wanting to stay and fix what heād broken. Foolish, careless words. Maybe heād been around S_R a little too long. Maybe it was just the litter runt in him. Or maybe it was just Him.
[C_K] Chaseā¦
*-Iām sorry-. It was on the tip of his tongue. Iām sorry.
[C_K] Goodnight, Halstead.
BMB RP: An Agreement is Made
In which S_R finds Cyborg discuss business.
Starring: S_R and Cyborg
*He has taken to stalking around the edges of the Ball, partly as a half-idle security check, but mostly because it is quieter here. Ā The guests, for the most part, seem to have been suitably corralled to the decorated sections during the āfestivitiesā, but with quite a few of the assigned guards currently helping haul drunken Agris out of bellowing-range, the official perimeter is getting a bit porous.
*He reaches the furthest stairwell, sectioned off with a silvered rope and currently without any watchful eyes at its entrance, and is about to turn back when he spots a gleam reflecting off the black lacquer of the wall, further down towards Level 5. Ā It is not the bruised-light tint of the Ball decorations, nor the harsh white of normal illumination, and his eyes narrow slightly.
Whoās sneaking about down there?
*Quietly, he ducks under the rope, and moves softly down the staircase, with one hand on the hilt of his ridiculous sword.
*Cyborg rests her body on the stairs, sitting there and letting her mind wander as she processes all that sheās seen taking place tonight. Being this close to Statespeople, even ones that were ordered to act pleasantly, is subtly unnerving. Itās like entering the den of several barely-trained predators, all just waiting for their trainerās back to be turned so they could snap and bite at whoever they deemed prey. Sheād had to find a quiet corner to pull herself mentally together before she left with the Crew, all smiling and thanking the Facilitator for a āwonderfulā night.
*Mind you, further down the stairs it seemed that they had dimmed if not shut off the lights that didnāt seem āneededā, and the shadows they were casting were also just a little bit strange. Itās a mark of how on edge she is that even her own shadow, elongated and slightly darker in the semi-gloom and glare of a few dimmed buzzing lights is making the hair stand up on the back of her neck right nowā¦
*S_R treads carefully, silent with the liquid agility that has seen him well in the past. Ā There is indeed a figure further down the stairwell, sat back against the steps in an uncomfortable pseudo-chair. Ā The faint purple glow is brighter now, and he realises in quick succession both its origin, and the identity of its originator.
What are you up to?
[S_R] Strange place to be at a party, in a corner like this.
*He keeps his voice fairly low, so it wonāt carry up and attract any more attention.
*Cyborg stiffens slightly and turns, to see the first person sheād approached at this event. Ā She makes herself relax a bit. He at least had been willing to talk.
[Cyborg] I needed some time to myself. Itās grating on the mind to have so many people around you that you know you canāt trust. Here Iām out of the way and can⦠rest. As much as I can here.
*She turns back around and closes her eyes, tiling her head back slightly and giving a tiny sigh under her breath, barely audible.
[S_R] You should try living here.
*He takes another few steps down, until he is level with her, and leans back against the wall. The faint violet light from her eye glints on his belt buckle, and the buttons of his waistcoat.
[S_R] That wasnāt an invitation. Ā Or a threat. Ā So. *he folds his arms, looking hard at Cyborg.* Why. Ā Is your eyeball glowing like a cheap lamp?
*Cyborg looks confused then realises what heās talking about.
[Cyborg] Oh. Thatās just a side-effect of having a cybernetic eye. Never really asked why purple though. Canāt just switch it off either, it comes with being able to see out of this side of the face.
*She pauses.
[Cyborg] And Iām glad that at least you have no interest in either recruiting me to this place or making threats against my life⦠appreciate it.
*S_R snorts.
[S_R] Itās been a long evening. Ā I can threaten you if you like, but Iāve used my best ones already. Ā *he raises an eyebrow, and doesnāt bother to keep the curiosity from his voice* ...did you find Vesalius, in the end?
*Cyborg shakes her head.
[Cyborg] Always too surrounded by others clamouring for attention and conversations. Plus I was reminded that Iām not somewhere that I could escape consequences for hasty actions⦠for others if not for myself.
*She clenches her fist slightly.
[Cyborg] I canāt do anything while heās in here. While people are watching⦠the Mothermen. But at least I know more now than I did when I arrived. Heās here, and this place has a security force with a name. A grouping within a State facility⦠and here I thought that the line was that you were all one unit for the good of āMotherā. Thatās interesting. Maybe there are some differencesā¦
[S_R] Mister Fairfax has very⦠specific ideas about naming.  And no imagination.
*He tilts his head, considering Cyborg again, and a thoughtful expression flickers across his face.
[S_R] If he⦠wasnāt in here. Ā Away from those watching eyes. *he pauses, letting the sentence weigh in the air, before continuing.* I guess that would be of interest to you?
[Cyborg] Well, itād certainly give me a chance to do something.
*She looks at S_R curiously, trying to measure up if this is just a method of entrapment.
[Cyborg] Of course, Iād never want to do anything that could be considered aggression against the majority here. I only have a cause to argue with him, and even then only because itās the most logical answer to the question of who is responsible for what happened. I could even ask him about it and find that it wasnāt his doing after all⦠although from what I know I doubt it.
*She keeps a close eye on him, waiting to see what heāll do.
*S_Rās fingers drum against his arm. Ā Considering. Ā But this was the best chance heād had in a whileā¦
[S_R] Bluntly? Ā Youāre a scavenger, you arenāt welded to any Loyal delusions, and you know your way around a Facility. Ā I can use that. Ā *he unfolds his arms, tapping one finger against its gloved opposite as he continues, not dropping her gaze.* I have to sign in and out of this damned hole, and Iāve got Clerks up my ass wanting reports on every Chainsdamned step I take when I do.Ā Any idea of whatās going on out there is of interest to me.
*He hesitates, then waves one hand, irritably.
[S_R] State-related. Ā Unless someoneās actually planning to blow out our walls, I couldnāt give less of a fuck what any other idiot out there is up to.
*Cyborg blinks and looks confused.
[Cyborg] You want me to help you learn more about the Silo and other State facilities beyond this wall? And from the hints I assume youād let me have the chance I needed to finally sort my disagreement in return?
*She pauses.
[Cyborg] This really is a different sort of State facility than Iām used to knowing about⦠or maybe I just hadnāt known enough.
*S_R gives a small laugh, although there is little mirth in the sound.
[S_R] This wouldnāt be even slightly official. Ā I can give you a code to access a private comm channel, from any State network thatās still humming. Ā Itās not elaborate, but times and co-ordinates donāt need to be. Ā I let you know if he leaves; where heās headed.
*The grin that follows is sharp at the edges.
[S_R] And Iāll be sure to watch something else.
*Cyborg smiles back.
[Cyborg] An exchange of information. And information that I can give without hesitation⦠I like that.
*She finally stands up, suddenly a little bit more energetic in the excitement of this exchange.
[Cyborg] I think that an agreement could be made. I need an excuse to roam a little bit and maybe explore some State ruins⦠or maybe just around them if youād rather do that probing for yourself. I remember you said you wanted to.
*She tries to think if she ever saw a communications uplink at the Crater when she was last there. No, sheād gotten distracted by finding someone else there. She hadnāt had time to check if the communications were working well enough after the base had been hit. Sheād find some way though.
[S_R] If it looks untouched, or occupied, I wouldnāt advise poking around on your own. Ā Other than the⦠Silo? The ADE-FAC. Ā That one, I want first crack at. Ā My reasons.
*S_R straightens up too, and takes the first few steps back up towards the Ball.
[S_R] This damn party is nearly over, and we are ā technically ā out of bounds for guests. Ā Iāll escort you, and find some paper, because this frocked-up nonsense doesnāt even have -pockets-.
*Cyborgās eye widens in shock.
[Cyborg] Oh I had no idea Iād gone out of bounds. I was honestly just⦠well, trying to find a corner to be out of sight. There was no one about to stop me so... Lead on, I suppose.
*She begins to follow behind him.
[Cyborg] I wouldnāt approach anywhere occupied anyway⦠I still maintain that this place is rather⦠exceptional. In many ways. I havenāt forgotten what I learned in the past.
*S_R snorts again, as he unhooks the silvered rope and holds it aside.
[S_R] You have no idea.
BMB Open RP: Dancefloor
In which Nights and Halstead partake in the dance.
Starring: Nights and Halstead
The dancefloor is a wide space cleared in the body of Level Four, open to the well in the centre of the Facility all along one side, with silver paper crescents and fine, decorative chains hanging like a curtain above the walled railing there. Ā Music is soft, dreamlike and slow, and Wards and Citizens alike sway and twirl within the blue-lit space.
The music is not so loud that conversation is impeded, and there are plenty of small groups arranged around the side of the dance floor, conversing as they wait and watch the dancers. Ā Tables of refreshments - watered wine and weakened spirits - are set at intervals around the edges, periodically topped up by thin Unward figures.
Would you care to dance
*For minutes Halstead is entranced by the nigh perfect performance of a couple of clerks. Both float and weave over the dance floor each perfectly anticipating the movement of the other, if not for the expansion of lungs and gentle blinks of their eyes they might seem programmed rather than choreographed.
* She stands to the side, one hand perfectly still against her body holding onto a flute of sparkling wine that is so diluted the sparkling bubbles are a rarity in the liquid rather than common. It seems forgotten as there isn't a trace of fingers or lips to be spotted on it's crystal clear surface.
*A woman in a shining sky suit finishes a brief dance with a random citizen she talked little too while dancing, more using them as a practice partner than anything else. Her movements while dancing where sharp, aggressive, precise, and above all, elegant. An onlooker might say she would have had a better time with a ward than a citizen. Her slicked back hair shines in the blue light and as she steps off the dance floor she smiles. She has spotted the other masked woman. She could see the mechanics underneath the glove as easily as if the glove was off and she bows before speaking.* [Nights] You are like art in a place of concrete. Tell me, did you make it yourself? *Her eyes look over to the mechanical hand delicately holding the champagne glass.* I can smell it on you, the grease that comes with working with such things. *She says it kindly, more a compliment than an insult.*
*Pretty swiftly Halstead's eyes shift to a figure amidst the unfolding dance, wearing a living sky-suit and moving with confident elegance. She finds herself surprised when the woman approaches her. She remembers her from the greetings. Leader of a group at the borders, not connected to the State.
*As the woman speaks Halstead shifts suddenly, head straightened and eyes blinking to process such a pronounced compliment. She realizes she's smiling, allowing the gesture to bleed beyond the scarf.
[Halstead] You must be a well-liked woman if this is how you approach everyone, Miss Nights. *The glass shifts from her one hand to the other and she flexes her fingers delicately, tightening fabric stretches over the fleshless digits.* You have good senses, Miss. I figured I had fooled everyone who didn't know from experience, but yes it's my work. Ā I think Laurence glossed over my name when you introduced yourself. I am Chastity Halstead. You may call me Chase if thatās more to your liking.
*Halstead alters her position, visually becoming less stand-offish towards the new guest.
[Halstead] I take it you dabble in grease rather than ink as well? Very interesting! I didn't quite know what to peg you as. You stood out amidst our guests. Refined, confident and accompanied by such an interesting group of people. Not to mention the fabric of your clothes. You know how to catch people's attentions, that's a certainty.
[Nights] My mages idea. *She holds up her hand by her ear and makes the crystal wrapped around her wrist under her suit jacket more noticeable.* I was not allowed to wear my own coat for this eveningā¦. looking like a citizen⦠*She sighs and puts her hand back down.*
But you, whom bare a citizen or civilian name, where you born here in mothers arms? *She speaks with an unsettling tone, it's strange as if familiar with the words.*
*Halstead eyes the material with interest and glances at the crystal.
[Halstead] Wondrous what extraordinary materials are littered across the world.
*At the question she chuckles softly, her head shaking.
[Halstead] Don't let Laurence hear you said that⦠He might think less of you for it. I'm a Dreglander, small country formerly colonized by the State. *She hastily waves her hand as if to wisp away the topic.* You can drop any of 'Mother's Etiquettes' around me if you want. I'm not in a position to judge it or criticize.
[Nights] Ah, pardon, I have been around it much more than Iād like. Clearly it has effected me. *She turns her head as the music picks up again* And how are you with dancing Chase?
[Halstead] Haven't we all?⦠Just enjoy your evening, Miss Nights. I don't think any of the shriveled up mice here have anything you'll ever need. *She follows Night's eyes as she turns to the dance floor.* Still a work in progress, truth be told. But I should be decent enough not to maim you in the process. *Nights extends a hand and bows slightly in offering to dance.* Just pretend you are in the rafters, careful steps are always key.
*Halstead laughs kindly and more genuine than she has done in a long while. With a caring smile she steps forward, bowing through her legs and tilting her head in acceptance of the dance. Carefully she takes a hold of Nightās hand.
[Halstead] Iāll follow your lead, Miss Nights. *Nights takes her in a firm grip, fingers working over metal bones in hand and smiling. She leads her slowly at first in a dance before becoming more bold, the pace quickens as Chase gains confidence as they swirl around the dancefloor among those they do not belong with.*
*There is a moment of fear for Chase as Nights takes a hold of her arm but the fiery woman does not back down from the crude mockery of a limb. Chase gains a confidence she didn't think she possessed anymore. With fear forgotten she easily follows Nights' lead.* *The song comes to an end slowly. Nights leads Chase off by her hand back to the side of the dancefloor. They find themselves being looked at by both ward and citizens after the dance. Nights seems to have gotten use to it, as she ignores the strange side looks and stares.*
[Nights] You are clearly not as bad as you expected. Do not let this facility make you forget that. *She says cautiously but with enough light hearted tones to not arouse suspicion.*
*There is a slight gasp to Chase's breathing as they come to a stop, something she quickly hides in a light-hearted laugh.
[Halstead] I enjoyed this. It has been a while since I have had the pleasure, Miss Nights. Different times. You sound worried for me⦠Please don't be. I know my place in this facility and it is deliberately chosen.
*She looks around the room, scanning for one of the many pairs of eyes and ears of the Facility.
[Halstead] Your worry is misplaced, I assure you.
*Nights simply bows and turns. As she leaves the ominous black bird flies back from where it was and lands on her shoulder in a flurry of black feathers. She just keeps walking, not even disturbed by the birds arrival.*

BMB RP: A very Blue Ball
In which Breyos meets up with an unexpected yet oddly familiar face.
Starring: Breyos, Blue and Halstead
[Breyos] Are you alright there..?
*Breyos grimaces when the AGRI-Ward, who has been entertaining him with hard to believe stories involving āhairy pigsā for the last couple of minutes, suddenly stops talking and clasps his hand in front of his mouth. His cheeks are cherry-red while the rest grows paler and paler. A little burp.
[Breyos] Why donāt you let me hold this for you, hmm?
*Breyos takes the AGRIās drink from him and the Ward instantly uses his other hand to press down even harder on his own mouth. He then turns on his heels and runs out of the room, nearly knocking over other guests on his way.
[Breyos] Yes, thatās⦠what I thoughtā¦
*In one hand, Breyos holds a glass of whiskey. His own drink. In the other, a glass with a lukewarm, slightly fizzy and non-transparent liquid he could only identify as the AGRI-brew. He can smell it from there. *Breyos looks around. The bar is all the way on the other side of the room and all nearby tables are occupied. When looking the other way, however, he spots a different solution to his problem. *With a smile, he walks over to Chase and extends his hand holding the AGRI-brew.
[Breyos] Ah, miss Halstead, how are you this evening? Would you care for a drink, perhaps?
* With an audibly heightened and forced giggle Chase waves the client goodbye, her arm swiftly dropping to her side and turning away just in time to hear Breyos call out to her. As the man moves up to her she lifts her hand with the flute of diluted sparkling wine but it does little to stop the citizen in his tracks. The cup of foul-smelling broth is hastily thrust in her hand. She merely blinks, looking at the thinly veiled attempt of courtesy and generosity.
[Halstead] ā¦Charming, Mister Vesalius. However do you swat the ladies from your person with this beguiling behaviorā¦
[Breyos] The universe holds many mysteries, does it not?
*Chase coughs slightly, shifting the hand with the concoction in it out of the immediate path of her nose.
[Halstead] You must feel right at home, Mister Vesalius. I'm gonna take it you are having a blast.
[Breyos] Fine company, fine whiskey. What more could I ask for, hmm? Even the AGRIās are still relatively well-behaved.
[Halstead] They have a very alluring charm⦠I like them drunk. Just not dressed like thatā¦
[Breyos] A pity that the only thing remotely bright about them are their teeth.
*Breyos looks around, absentmindedly swirling his drink around before taking another sip.
[Breyos] But, of course, with every large gathering of people, you will always find some old familiar faces youād rather not see. And also⦠new onesā¦
*With a subtly nudge of his head, he pulls Chaseās attention to the other side of the dance floor.
*The slight standstill in the conversation is easily covered as Chase scratches her throat, shaking her head side to side and shifting on her leg. Her curiosity is drawn back to Breyos as he gestures to a particular individual in the crowd.
*Having been able to finally locate someone to help her, Blue was conversing in a quiet voice. This was causing several guests to shoot her odd looks, as she was in fact, talking to a crow.
[Breyos] Do you know her?
[Halstead] Unknown by me. She arrived with a very⦠peculiar group.
[Breyos] Hmm⦠Yes, I thought so...
[Halstead] Whoever she is I do know she is quite out of your league, mister Vesalius. Let's not kid ourselves. A puffy-eyed look afterwards is hard to pull off especially with only one.
*Her tone and- what is visible of- her face is playful rather than scorning.
*Breyos chuckles as he looks back at Chase when she speaks. He then glances back at the woman briefly.
[Breyos] Oh, I have already caught a bigger fish today, miss Halstead. But you are right. Perhaps I should introduce myself to this⦠well⦠interesting looking lady, hmm? Ah, if you donāt mind..? You donāt want to finish that drink, do you?
[Halstead] Are we on a conquest, Mister Vesalius? Mind yourself. Laurence doesn't take kindly to⦠'sharing beds'.
*She swirls the brew in her hand, a new waft of something only described as death and rot eliciting another cough from behind the shawl.
[Halstead] Go right ahead. I think feeding this to the melon is only gonna harm it.
*Breyos smiles widely and reaches out, taking Chaseās wine glass from her. He slightly lifts it up into the air as a cheer for her.
[Breyos] Always so understanding. Thank you kindly, miss Halstead.
*With a determined, yet charming look on his face, he moves himself between the crowd towards this peculiar woman.
*Upon approach, it becomes apparent that Blue doesnāt appear to be speaking english to the bird, instead making quiet squawks and chirps. The bird seems to murmur some kind of response before Blue raises her arm and he flies off. She lets out a big sigh of relief.*
[Breyos] Good evening, miss.
*Blue freezes and looks over her shoulder at the one person she was trying to avoid. Her memory of when she had last seen this man was hazy, thanks to whatever chemical theyād tested on her. Her instincts tell her to run before something bad could happen, but in this crowded space there is no immediate escape routes available to her. She runs a hand through her hair, a nervous gesture, and tries to remain calm with the knowledge that the magic is hiding her true nature. She clears her throat and tries not to sound so nervous. It doesnāt work very well.
[BlueSky] Y-yeah? Good evening to you tooā¦
*Breyos smiles, extending the glass of wine towards her. [Breyos] Would you like a drink, perhaps, yes?
[BlueSky] Ugh, no Iād best not. Alcohol doesnāt sit well with me.
[Breyos] Oh, this is the wine, not that AGRI brew. No, you wouldnāt even want to give that poison to a dog, hmm.
*Breyos tips back the remains of his whiskey and places the empty glass on a nearby table. The glass of wine still in his hands. He chuckles faintly.
[Breyos] May I inquire about your name, miss?
*She tries desperately to think of some kind of response, slightly thrown by the dog comment, but it doesnāt come naturally to her.*
[BlueSky] Um, ah⦠You... would ask the name of a lady without introducing yourself first? What do they teach in these facilities?
*Breyos smiles faintly and takes a small bow before her, careful of his drink.
[Breyos] But of course. What was I thinking? My name is Breyos Vesalius. A pleasure. Please forgive me my manners, miss, but I could have sworn you had already caught my name earlier. Perhaps that was someone else.
*He looks around, casually swirls the wine in his glass. At first glance, none of the other guests seem to pay them any attention. Apart from Chase, most likely. He turns back to Blue with his back facing the rest of the room.
[Breyos] How may I call you? *Blue feels she wouldnāt be able to get out of this question again.*
[BlueSky] Heh⦠Iāve Ā been called, ugh a few things in my time. I suppose you can call me⦠Sapphire?
*She swears internally.* [Breyos] āSapphireā... Like the blue gem, yes? How delightful! Did you come here all by yourself, hmm? It is unusual for someone to be alone here.
[BlueSky] Oh no I have friends here. Theyāre around somewhere. We keep an eye on each other, making sure weāre all alright.
*While trying to sound confident she is painfully aware that she still has no idea where the rest of the crew currently is. She steps back a little to quickly glance past Breyos and see if she could spot someone, or better yet if someone could spot her.*
*Breyos chuckles. He turns himself to stand by her side. His left arm moves behind her, the palm of his hand gently but resolutely placed between her shoulders. He pushes, guiding her to turn around, facing away from the crowd. The smile on his face doesnāt falter. [Breyos] Oh but of course! Always a wise decision when drunk AGRI-Wards are in close proximity. Ha ha. Luckily, miss āSapphireā, we are all amongst friends here. And our dear Facilitator has been so kind to provide his guests with everything they need, did he not?
*Breyos keeps his hand placed between her shoulders, barely touching but the tips of his fingers still making contact with the subtle curve of the spinous process.
*Blue leaps away from his hand with a gasp of surprise and pain. Apparently, though the magic she and Curls had created had succeeded in changing her appearance, it had not affected the issues she still had with her back. She stared at him, unsure if what happened as accidental or done on purpose.
*The moment Blue gasps, Breyosā removes his hand from her back as it had shocked him.
[Breyos] Oh dear⦠Was that some static electricity? Surely it must have been, no?
*He takes a breath to regain himself and raises his index finger. He then continues... [Breyos] Luckily, that was nothing to worry about, was it? There is, however, one small thing I simply have to warn you about. Donāt worry, miss Sapphire, Iām certain it is not the end of the world. But, you see, mister Fairfax is very fond of his dogs and their wellbeing. He does not appreciate it when someone risks their health. That is why some AGRI-Wards are, for example, advised to hold their breath as they walk past them. Germs from the fields above, you understand.
*He takes another sip.
[Breyos] Now, I could not help but notice your own little animal companion earlier⦠It is a lovely bird, donāt get me wrong⦠Itās just that⦠you see, birds are known to carry mites. I do hate to be ruining anyoneās fun but I felt the need to give you this little heads-up. I have a dog myself, you see. And I would not want something to him either. So I must agree with our dearest Facilitator. I too prefer the company of canines over feathered creatures.
*She runs a hand through her hair again, shaken and annoyed by his comments*
[BlueSky] Well, I can assure you our Castle Crows are much cleaner than what you might view as wild animals.
[Breyos] Are they now? Well, I will have to take your word for it. During my last visit, I could only see them from a distance.
*Breyos closes in on Blue, his focus on her; unyielding.
[Breyos] But you are right. Birds are not the problem. We have a bigger infestation to worry about, donāt we? Because your friends⦠have brought in⦠a⦠rat.
*Blueās angry expression lessens into one of alarm and she backs away.*
[BlueSky] A⦠a rat? Iām⦠not sure I follow.
[Breyos] Do not mistake my subtlety for stupidity. I have worked with rats long enough to spot one when I see one in front of me.
*Breyos looks at her with medical curiosity, observing every detail. He leans forward slightly and speaks in a hushed whisper. One hand, very gently, touching the underside of her chin to coax her face in the direction of his choice.
[Breyos] How⦠did you do this
*Blueās foot collides with the wall as she tries to back away more, her palms pressing against the cold wall. She knew, that he knew, and her mind raced for what to do. Her initial feeling of wanting run was even stronger now, but now she was backed up against the wall with his hand on her chin. Her lip lifted slightly hinting at the start of snarl almost. She gave a long exhale through her nose, trying to regain composure.*
[BlueSky] If- if youāre so smart, you can work it out right? You lot have persecuted us for it for so long after all. Though we were all amazed we pulled this off so well.
*Breyos lets his hand fall from Blueās chin and places his open palm on his chest.
[Breyos] Persecuted? Oh dear, oh dear⦠Well then, I would strongly advise you to improve on your hiding skills *before* entering the lionās den. Why did you come here in the first place, I wonder, hmm?
[BlueSky] Tsk. Maybe we wanted to get to know our new neighbours? Or perhaps just curious as to what a ball was like. I thought it would be fun, after all, who'd have thought after all this time that you'd be here⦠Why are you here?
[Breyos] Birds of a feather, miss āSapphireā. And your kind does not belong here. We-ā¦
*Breyos gasps, stumbling slightly whilst spilling a gush of wine over his own hand after receiving a hard, unexpected slap on his shoulder. He turns around instantly only to stand face-to-face with the same AGRI he had seen hurrying out of the room earlier.
[AGRI] Oi mister! Dem Unwards got some heavy cleaninā up to do on Level 6. HA HA HA. Mustāve been somethinā I ate, like you said! Feelingā a whole lot better now!
[Breyos] Can this wait, I-
[AGRI] You still got my drink? Thanks mister!
*The AGRI-ward grins widely and snatches Breyosā glass from his hand. Breyos wrinkles his nose as he shakes off the droplets of wine from his hand while the AGRI, for a second time this evening, nearly chokes on his drink.
[AGRI] Was this what I been drinkinā?! No wonder I was sick! Burgh!
*Breyos quickly turns back to Blue but only sees an empty wall behind him. He only catches a glimpse of her brilliant blue dress before she hides between other guests. He dries his hands with his clean handkerchief and inhales deeply while the AGRI lets the final drop of wine fall to the floor.
[Breyos] Yes, I am⦠*delighted* you have recovered so well⦠If youād excuse meā¦
*Breyos moves past the big brute and returns to Chase.
[Breyos] She was not my type. Too āwildā.
BMB RP: The Princes of Gems and Space
In which R_V and Raziel admire the open sky.
Starring: R_V and Raziel
*A full moon graces the skies over the facility, bathing the building and lake in a gentle light. the flowers and bushes sway as a breeze pushes through all, almost as if they were dancing to the music booming through the dance hall.
*Raziel steps out from the entrance of the facility, the illusioned dragons on his jacket dancing as he takes a deep breath, the smell of the fresh flowers filling his nose and clearing his mind
*It had certainly been an eventful day and Raziel couldnāt believe how much time had flown. he had met many wonderful and interesting people, he had danced and laughed the night away and couldnāt help but drift back once again to the parties back at home, both the royal balls he attended as a prince and the academy parties he had hosted as studying mage.
*As he continued to walk towards the lake and explore he spots a young man standing tall by the facilityās doors, The moonlight reflecting of his white suit jacket. As Raziel approaches he notices the man clearly looking up towards the night sky, as he walks around to greet the man it almost looks like he has a look of longing on his face.
[Raziel] Beautiful night tonight, wouldnāt you agree my friend?
*R_Vās eyes linger on the stars above for a moment before snapping his head to face his company. He stands at a very calculated distance from the entrance and watches the man approaching.
[R_V] Any opportunity I get to look upon the stars again is quite the evening Mr
[Raziel] Baopian, Raziel Baopian
*He smiles warmly as he extends a hand to shake*
*R_V takes the manās hand and shakes firmly once, his free hand gesturing towards the facility.
[R_V] Good evening, Raziel Baopian - Iāve been instructed to escort you back to join our other guests as this area is off limits. However as we are under the stars Iām certain we can linger for a moment.
*R_V releases Razielās hand, his eyes again returning to bright glow of the sky as he brings his own hand to touch the badge pinned upon his jacket.
*Raziel bows his head towards R_V before walking to his side and continue his look at the sky*
[Raziel] Apologies, I was not aware this place was off limits. but I couldnāt help but admire the view
*He briefly looks towards R_V, his eyes catching the badge*
[Raziel] what is that symbol upon your chest?
*R_V smiles briefly, his chrome teeth shine slightly from the light of the sky.
[R_V] Not a man of the state then. Itās a medal that was awarded to me upon becoming Commander, Raziel. I was once among these stars.
*R_V sighs heavily as he turns slowly back towards the facility, he stands in the doorway staring at the sky for a final time.
[R_V] And what is your story, Raziel Baopian? Take a final look at the view for we must return.
*Razielās face lights up at R_V statement with an almost childlike wonder and curiosity as he continues to look at the stars*
[Raziel] A mortal was able to be amongst the heavens? what an interest world this place is
*He chuckles as he looks towards R_V now*
[Raziel] In my world I am next in line as head of the Baopian Clan, one of the many clans of my world⦠but here I am a humble mage & member of Castle Oakheart. A pleasure to meet you sirā¦..?
*R_V stares at Raziel with a look of bewilderment and nods.
[R_V] Yes⦠if the heavens are the Orbital Weapons and Research Platform Fortune then I suppose i was amongst them and at that - their commander. Commander R_V, Motherās most loyal son, entrusted member of the Mothermen Extraction Unit at this facility - a pleasure to meet you too, shall we?
*R_V begins to slowly walk down the tunnel, glancing occasionally at the decorations that dawn the walls in celebration of the ball, he sighs a little as his eyes meet the fake stars that hang above.
[Raziel] I meant being amongst the stars, but sure, that too.
*Raziel shortly follows R_V, casually looking around him at the walls and decorations*
[Raziel] So a commander? always a pleasure to meet a man of honour. also what was this āMothermen Extraction Unitā you were a part of?
[R_V] My current position in fact - Itās this facilities security and recon team. Next in line of your clan and a member of a mage crew was it? Iām afraid I donāt quite understand, might you explain?
[Raziel] ah apologies, allow me to explain. Originally Iām not from here, my home of Caelum is⦠well for a less confusing way of explaining it letās just say itās far away. back there Iām considered nobility.
*Raziel eyes look down*
[Raziel] I stumbled into this land trying to escape a massacre at my school, the spell that shouldāve have sent me to my capital to warn the military and emperor of the attack sent me here, where i was saved by the people of Castle Oakheart.
*He gestures towards himself*
[Raziel] So here I am now, just an average gem mage and a member of Oakheart, paying his debt to his saviours
[R_V] Quite the story Mr Baopian, and this school was amongst the stars was it? Very interesting, uncharted territory in the eyes of Mother!
[Raziel] Well if i ever find a way to return there, youāre more than welcome to join me. No doubt a man whose travelled amongst the stars will be of keen interest and a man of topic with the emperor and clans.
[R_V] You are the second guest this evening to invite me to leave my facility - the State is where I belong and where I shall remain, any ventures outside of this facility will only be a result of my facilitators will.
*R_V continues down the tunnel quietly, they soon reach the end of the tunnel and R_V pauses just before the opened blast door, snapping quickly round to face Raziel.
[R_V] I must however thank you for that offer, perhaps one day the chain will guide me to the stars once more.
[Raziel] You are very welcome my friend, & know that if fate were ever to see you come to my land, that you would be more than welcome in Caelum. Youāre a man of Honour I can tell, and that's rare to come by these days, certainly something we need more of.
*R_V politely smiles and nods.
[R_V] Thank you, thank you. So tell me Mr. Baopian, Raziel - you mentioned a Castle Oakheart? could you tell me about them? Iām⦠curious.
[Raziel] Of course, although I must say Iām not too sure how much info Iāll have for you if your after specifics.
*he looks past R_V briefly, his eyes focusing on a small group of people huddled together talking and laughing, there unique outfits and vibrant dresses making them stand out from the decorations and ballroom lighting, before returning to R_V.*
[Raziel] I feel the best way to describe Castle Oakheart and its people...is like a magical dysfunctional family. Each person in those walls comes from very different walks of life, both in upbringing and in styles of magic. yet even with our differences we all still get along and work together...Ā And as you can see looking at me, theyāre not one to turn down helping a stranger.
*Raziel smiles.*
[Raziel] Theyāre good people, a little bizarre and a tad chaotic, but good people none the less.
[R_V] Sounds like an⦠interesting bunch. I do hope you and your crew did not have to travel far from there to come here - perhaps a day or so of travelling?
*R_V returns a smile, tilting his head slightly with raised brows carefully watching Raziel.
[Raziel] More or less, I probably should have paid more attention to how we got here, but I can say weāre close enough to visit, so no doubt our paths will cross again after this ball
[R_V] Hopefully under pleasant circumstances Mr. Baopian.
*R_V and Raziel finally approach the ballroom, R_V holds the doorway open for him with his foot and gestures into the party with a free hand.
[R_V] You have been escorted back peacefully - please rejoin your friends Raziel Baopian - only access to level 4 is permitted to guests, Iād hate to find you trespassing again - the conversation would not be pleasant for you.
*R_V smiles widely and extends his other hand to the man offering a handshake, quickly he glances to see if anyone is watching from inside the room and back to Raziel.
[R_V] And do have a pleasant evening, Iām sure the guests would be thrilled to hear your tales of the stars as they are of my own.
[Raziel] While I doubt my stories would captivate an audience as well as yours my friend, I do agree that it is time for me to return to my group. Thank you again for the chat and walk back to the hall. & once again, I apologise for my inconvenience
*Raziel smiles, bows and then taking R_Vās hand in one of his own, shaking firmly before walking past R_V towards Nights and The Crew*
BMB RP: Blue Moon Ball Speech
In which Fairfax presents his Speech.
Starring: Fairfax and C_C.
*The evening grows late at the Blue Moon Ball. Wards, spinning on the dance floor, move sluggishly now, grown weary. Some slow dance with waists gripped, resting draped, exhausted limbs on their partners. C_C and Laurence descend the stairs leisurely, arm in arm, from some unseen upper level. There is black lipstick on the Facilitatorās collar and he no longer wears his mask. His fringe has fallen and he carries a half empty glass.
They pass pallid Citizens on the stairs and a swaying lone woman whose thin body is wrapped in rose coloured silk.
[Citizen Woman] Love the aftershave, Laurie.
[Fairfax] Oh, thatās just my money you can smell, dear girl. Whittakers. All the women are the same.
They step onto Level Four, parting a group of AGRIs bellowing laughter. C_C squeezes Laurenceās upper arm.
[Fairfax] Hmmn?
[C_C] You asked your Functionary to tell you when it was 10pm.
[Fairfax] Yes?
[C_C] It is now quarter past.
*Fairfax turns to him. For a moment anger is cold and measureless in his eyes. Then he smirks obscenely.
[Fairfax] Well whoās counting, darling?
*Laurence takes a desert spoon from a nearby table and chimes it firmly against his glass until the room hushes gradually. He stands at the balcony, smiling at his guests and Wards in turn. The figures on the dancefloor part, hands held. A nearby AGRI grins wildly, recognising this particular piece of citizen etiquette. She bellows.
[AGRI] SPEECH!
*Laurence shifts slightly in alarm, and clears his throat. The remaining AGRIs join her cry.
[AGRIs] SPEECH, SPEECH!
[Fairfax] Yes, there will be a speech, darlings, very well done.
*The level is quiet now. Laurence raises his chin and smiles softly.
[Fairfax] Whatās the difference between the Audit Office and a Fairfax?
*He pauses, smirking indecently.
[Fairfax] The Auditors couldnāt organise their Party.
*There is silence from the room, gasps, from corners where the citizens gather. Laurence grins. He touches glasses with an Unward server.
*A female voice murmurs from the gathered crowd.
[Darcey] Good people have burned for saying less than that, Laurence.
[Fairfax] A simple jest, my dear girl. There was once a book, oh, long disallowed. And do you know what they did in that book, in the Old Testament to be exact, to those that reneged their debts?
*His blue eyes settle on the woman. She looks away with disdain.
[Fairfax] Stoned them to death, Darcey.
*He breathes outward with a satisfied sigh.
[Fairfax] And yet conversely I invite my debtors, my borrowers, my insolvents and defaulters, yes, you all, to dance, and dine, and to drink. To enjoy my refreshments and my entertainments. You must give me credit for that, surely?
*There is a tussle in the crowd, and Ashwood Moore, drunk and aflush, shoulders through. [Moore] Credit? How about you give our family some of that, Laurence? What else do you expect me to pay your imaginative invoices with, precisely?
[Fairfax] Come now, Iāve heard it on good authority that an interested party wants to buy your compound. And turn it a rendering plant exporting tripe and offal to the Dreglands! Dogfood? Oh, hardly...
*Laurence finds Chase in the crowd, and winks salaciously.
[Moore] Weād never sell our home. Besides, the offer was derisory.
[Fairfax] Itās the best Iām going to give you, Ashwood. Now be a dear and let me make my speech. Firstly, Iād like to thank you all for coming -
*Another voice rises sharply.
[Blackwood] Iāll tell you what he did to me! Him and that Brother of his!
[Fairfax] Blackwood, donāt be a bore, old boy.
*Blackwood shrugs the arms of his family, shouting above Laurenceās words. Laurence smiles indulgently.
[Blackwood] Informed the Ministry that my tax owable was in arrears by millions, that Iād been evading it for years! And embezzling from my own company! He said - he said - that Iād been mixing too much grit and sand in my concrete to save money, and THATāS the reason why every Facility I built was going to fail structurally! He could demonstrate it, in the books! I was bankrupt overnight! He had that vile Brother of his acquire the damned FACs for a pittance, and then what do you think happened, hmmn?
*Laurence sips the remainder of his wine disinterestedly.
[Blackwood] Iāll tell you! Upon examination, my finances and accounting were found to be correct!
[Fairfax] I should think so, Mr. Blackwood. I did them myself, afterall. Well. My Clerks kindly assisted. And they apologised to you for their⦠Grave initial error.
*He smiles conspiratorially at C_C, who flicks his eyes downward.
[Fairfax] Now if I might continue - Iād like to thank you all for coming, it is indeed a weighty honour to have friends old and new in my beloved Facility -
[Blackwood] Bastard!
*Laurence fixes his cold eyes on the other man.
[Fairfax] The interest on your repayments just doubled.
[Blackwood] You - incorrigible - grasping⦠Greedy ā¦
[Fairfax] Tripled. Do go on.
*Blackwood is silenced. Fairfax gives a swift nod to R_V. He begins to approach the citizen.
[Fairfax] Now, as I was saying -
[Darcey Graves] You think you have it bad, Blackwood? He bought my factory for ten percent of what it was worth when it was built.
[Fairfax] Depreciation, Darcey.
[Darcey Graves] And do you know what my Wards were doing there - what Motherly task he repurposed them to?
*Fairfax smiles into his raised wine glass.
[Darcey Graves] Steaming the unused stamps from fifty years of confiscated mail.
[Fairfax] Tax-free capital gains Darcey. I always did enjoy a touch of stamp collecting. You can ask my Mother and Father. Oh, I was passionate.
[Darcey Groves] You still owe me the money for the building, Laurence.
[Fairfax] I told you darling. The chequeās in the post.
*She spins and re-enters the crowd, pushing tittering Clerks aside roughly.
*Laurence clears his throat, and raises his glass.
[Fairfax] A toast then. To FAIR-CO, the only thing that currently stands between you and⦠Well, the unthinkable. Please do ensure you send your next remittance in a timely fashion. We wouldnāt want any more bother. Youāll notice the Urquharts couldnāt join us this year. Are you at all familiar with that special variety of darkness that falls in a disused Facility? I assure you, itās quite absolute. After a while the Wards become quite untethered, you know. They scream, and scream, and screamā¦
*Laurence takes a contemplative sip of his drink. Holding it aloft, he regards the silver paper moons through cut crystal.
[Fairfax] I rather perish the thought of any more of that.
*Laurence smiles softly, tipping his glass toward the gathered crowd.
[Fairfax] Until next year.
*He turns toward the balcony edge, and exhales. Clerks applaud. Whispers elsewhere turn to conversations, and the music resumes. A quiet young woman speaks finally, a thin, ashen Ward from one of the outlying compounds.
[Ward] We are starving, Mr. Fairfax, Sir.
*Fairfax turns to regard her with a cold, sidelong glance.
[Fairfax] Canapes are on the table, my dear.
