On June 19, six leading Black museums and historical institutions from coast to coast join forces to launch BLKFREEDOM.org, a digital commemoration of Juneteenth, the day that the Emancipation Proclamation was officially enforced, ending enslavement in Texas.

The launch of BLKFREEDOM.org will commemorate the 155th Anniversary of Juneteenth, which dates back to June 19, 1865, when union soldier, Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with the news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. This announcement was more than two and half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

This Friday, June 19th the project will go live at 11:00am CST and feature cultural performances from Africa and across America. This timeless event will be available via livestream through partnerships with PBS Books and Detroit Public Television (DPTV) and feature such historical figures as:

Lonnie G. Bunch III, the first African American and first historian to serve as the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution

Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole, anthropologist, educator, museum director and the first female African American president of Spelman College

The Honorable Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress, the first woman and the first African American to lead the national library

Through educational content, artistic performances and shareable discussion prompts, this collaborative program will explore the meaning and relevance of “freedom”, “justice” and “democracy” in Black American life, from a historical and contemporary framework. Not well today so I'm just gonna share this link with some cool stuff to commemorate Juneteenth, brought to us by the collective efforts of 6 Black museums.

On the page there's an embeded 80 minute video, which becomes available today at 12pm ET/9am PT here in the US. There's also shareable fact cards formatted for instagram, a printable Juneteenth flag for coloring, and a bunch of other info.

"In our ongoing effort to share resources by activists and movements that fight for racial justice, we would like to recognize the significance of today - Juneteenth.

Juneteenth, an annual holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, has been celebrated by African-Americans since the late 1800s. This year it may resonate in a new way with many of us with the widespread protests across the US and the globe in pursuit of racial justice.

If you are looking for a virtual way to commemorate Juneteenth, six Black museums are joining forces to commemorate the 155th anniversary. Watch the video today at 9 am Pacific/ 12 pm Eastern.
