I’ve been making BG3 comics for a long time now. I want to properly introduce Raven and explain how he connects to the canon cast. Consider this a guide to the kind of man he is. ;)

Raven is a Grim Knight custom class who fights using a scythe. His design is simple by necessity. Since I mostly draw comics, I have to illustrate him from countless angles, so keeping his outfit efficient helps. But beyond that, I just love black.

He stands about 185–187 cm tall, weighs 82 kilograms, and has a lean build. I’d say he’s fairly handsome.

Under emotional duress or when the “urge” surfaces, his sclera turns black. Though he’s half tiefling, (as a pureblood Bhaalspawn, his race is purely cosmetic.) I left out the tail and horns. I just couldn’t see him with those features, so I made him a half-elf/half-tiefling hybrid instead.

He loves anything extremely spicy, his food has to feel like it’s burning off his tongue to be enjoyable. His favorite color is green, purely because it’s the color of Shadowheart’s eyes. It makes him think of tender spring leaves, and leaves him aching for more than a drink.

He’s also meant to be a mirror for players or readers to insert into. He’s not flashy. But he’s magnetic in a slow-burn way.

He’s a good leader, clever, and excellent at strategy. But he’s terrible at socializing. Most diplomacy is handled by companions like Gale, Jaheira, or Halsin. His preferred method is intimidation, which worked for a while, until Jaheira called him out for relying on threats to get what he wants. Since then, he’s been trying (awkwardly) to do better.

In personality, Raven is deeply bottled up. He doesn’t talk unless he has to, and when he does, it’s usually blunt or tactless. He just never learned how to express himself gently. His love language is action, not words. He’s fiercely protective and surprisingly romantic when it comes to Shadowheart, whom he loves deeply.

With Shadowheart, his instinct is to take control, but he’s not oblivious to the weight of it. When it matters, he’ll step back. For all his edges, he’s a gentleman in his own way. He never pushes her toward physical or romantic ground she’s not ready for. But when it comes to emotions, he has no brakes. His own feelings, hers, he confronts them head on. If she steps off the path into shadow, he’ll follow without hesitation, just to make sure she walks it on her own terms, and that no one else dares steer her.

He also shares a strong bond with Jaheira, second only to Shadowheart. She’s a mentor to him, a mother figure he never had. That role means a great deal to him. If Shadowheart weren’t in the picture, I could easily imagine him falling for Jaheira outright, but she’d almost certainly reject him. She’s well past that sort of entanglement.

Raven also has a deep history with beautiful Orin, which I’ve chosen to keep alive in my headcanon because I’m a huge fan of her redeeming herself.

Raven is chronically exhausted and plagued by severe migraines as a result of the lobotomy. He was originally lawful evil, but the lobotomy fundamentally altered him. The procedure severed or destroyed connections in parts of his prefrontal cortex and limbic system, areas that govern aggression, impulse control, and emotional regulation. By damaging these neural circuits, the lobotomy dulled the instincts tied to violence and hatred, but at a heavy cost.

Back in his peak, before the tadpole, he was a sharp manipulator. Gortash saw it and liked it.

He hasn’t lost the ability. Just the need to use it all the time.

But when he does, he reminds you exactly why people once followed him into the dark, and felt lucky to do it.
