Or because you think I don’t want to talk to you?” Berenger took a breath, looking past Ancel rather than at him. “You didn’t want to talk to me before.” “I was angry, before,” Ancel said. “Do you blame me for that?” “Of course not.” “Even I can’t hold a grudge for five years,” Ancel said. He smiled, faintly. “I’d get wrinkles. I have to maintain what’s left of my looks.” He gestured to his face.

“You’re back!”

He’d been waiting for them, his hands finding Berenger’s face as if to memorize it—to reassure himself that this was real.

“You’re still here.” Amazement colors his voice and lights up his eyes in equal measure.

“And you,” he prods Berenger’s chest, “are out of excuses. The prince has won. You’ve won. And if you want to turn me down again, you’ll have to mean it.”

“You honestly think I could?”

“You’ve always been dreadfully immune,” Ancel says lightly, pressing his lips to Berenger’s bright grin. His heart jumps at Berenger’s words when he pulls back.

“I haven’t.”
