Marilyn Monroe during a public appearance, Bement, Illinois, Eve Arnold, 1955
Abandoned Grain Elevator
This structure is just two and a half miles east of Bement, Illinois—visible on the western horizon. Perusing a map from 1955 provides no name, if a town ever existed here.
A viewer on FB states that the siding may be named Piatt, which is the same name as the county. The rail line was once the Wabash Railroad, and is now part of the sprawling Norfolk Southern system.

While in Bement, Illinois, for an appearance celebrating the city’s centennial, Marilyn visited the opening of an Abraham Lincoln museum, 1955. Marilyn was to give a speech on Lincoln, and while on the airplane to Bement, she wrote out and prepared her speech.
“She wanted to learn. She wanted to study. She was really taken by Lincoln. She had read a little bit about him, and somebody must have given her my Lincoln, because in the magazine photograph she is walking to the aeroplane holding my book. It is very obvious because mine was a big book with a big “Lincoln” heading and his picture is on the cover. After I got to know her, I sent her a picture of Lincoln looking like a young and handsome movie actor. I made a big enlargement, had it framed, and sent it to her either for her birthday or Christmas. She hung that picture over her bed.” — Stefan Lorant, from Stefan Lorant: Godfather of Photojournalism by Michael Hallett

Rare color snaps of Marilyn Monroe during her visit to the tiny village of Bement, Illinois, in 1955. Richly detailed photos, which capture some of what Billy Wilder called her “flesh impact”. The peachy fuzz on her skin, clearly visible in these photos, lit up under studio lights, giving her that unusual shimmering glow that made her seem to radiate.
