@beastenraged re: this reply thread I was at one point talking with @oswaldthatendswald about benn beckman/shamrock as 'red string of fate' soulmates in the context of their Teen Roadtrip AU (Rosinante gets unwillingly brought back to Mary Geoise age ~16, a few months before the same thing happens to Shanks, and the origin of the Red-Haired Pirates ends up being a daring escape with a very willing Benn Beckman and a much less willing Shamrock) and i spitballed an outline for a scene that seeing this gave me the push to write up :)
While Shamrock had of course handled retrieving his soulmate himself, he had accepted Fatherâs offer to prepare a suitable room. Father was skilled and experienced, so of course Shamrock hadnât expected the arrangements to be bad, but it was a minor relief to inspect the suite and confirm that everything was indeed ready.Â
âBring him in,â he ordered the slaves. While it would have been most traditionally appropriate to carry his soulmate over the threshold himself, the bondola was some distance from the Figarland manor, and he did not yet have the benefits of a Deep Sea Covenant. And his soulmate, inconveniently, outmatched him in both height and weight. Perhaps Shamrock would have reached his final growth spurt by the time he obtained his next rooms, and could enact the ritual properly. His soulmate might even be awake for that.Â
The man being laid unconscious on the bed was certainly in no state to appreciate an introduction to his new life. Shamrock kept vigil beside him until he finally woke, the red thread of their shared soul hanging taut between them.Â
His breathing barely changed, but the flare of alertness was like a firework to Shamrockâs Observation haki. His eyes barely cracked open, taking in the sumptuous chamber with a look of confusion, finally settling on Shamrock like two bright gems. Shamrock considered himself pleased. Doubtless it was the first taste of true finery the human had ever had in his life, but here he was looking at Shamrock. As was right and proper.Â
âMay I know your name?â Shamrock asked. The insects heâd found his soulmate surrounded by hadnât even been able to give him that, dismissing him as âsome foreign bounty hunter.â Heâd been waiting for this moment ever since.
ââŚBenn Beckman.â It suited him. Shamrock nodded, internalizing the syllables, writing them onto his heart. âWho are you? Where is this?â
âI am your soulmate, Saint Figarland Shamrock.â Beckmanâs eyes grew wide at the title. Good. âYou are in the Holy Land, Mary Geoise. My home. Your home now as well.â
Beckman covered his eyes. âYouâve got to be kidding me.â
âYou can see our connection for yourself.â Father had warned Shamrock that his soulmate might beâŚunruly, upon discovering their new life, though he had never elaborated on why that might be.Â
âYouâre a child. Canât even grow a damn beard yet."
Shamrock was more stung by the words than he really ought to be. âIâve completed every other rite to become a Knight of God. Retrieving you was my final task.â
Beckman sat up, squinting at him. âHow old even are you?â
âAlmost sixteen. Not that it mattersââ
âYouâre fifteen?â Beckman said some more words, ones Shamrock didnât know. They didnât sound happy.Â
"Not that it matters,â Shamrock repeated, imbuing the words with Conquerorâs haki to make his point. It brought his soulmate to silence, at least. âBecause, as I said, retrieving you was my last task to rise to the rank of Devoted Blade. Even most among the ranks of the Celestial Dragons never attain such an honor.â
âYou have to be a child bride for that?â
âGroom!â Shamrock could feel a furious blush creeping over his face. Could he not even tellâoh, he was smirking. That had been mockery. Shamrock pushed a little more Conquerorâs haki behind his next words. âA Knight of God must not lack any part of their soul, to be considered a Devoted Blade. It was required I retrieve you myself to prove my worth. I searched across the North Blue for you and raised you to the holy land beside me, to dwell with me in wedded bliss.â
Beckman looked at him the same way Father did when he had said something particularly naĂŻve. It wasnât Shamrockâs fault his soulmate had no sense of romance. Not when the man had spent their time together either fighting or unconscious. Heâd just have to learn.Â
He didnât interrupt again, so Shamrock continued. âThis is a great honor. Iâm lucky to have been given the chance to prove my worth and bring you here. I will be one of the youngest candidates to ever be made a knight. It wouldnât have been possible without the support and training and approval of the current Commander of the Godâs Knights.â
âReally.â Beckman didnât sound impressed about it, but he sounded thoughtful. Was thoughtful a good sign? âWill I get to meet this Commander?â
âVery likely. Heâs my father, Figarland Garling.â
Beckman screwed up his face. âYour father?â
âYes.â
âYour father?â
âItâs not nepotism,â Shamrock insisted. âI havenât been given anything unearned. Iâve simply had the benefit of knowingââ
âYour father thought it was a good idea to put you between some, some stranger and getting out of here? At fifteen?â
âI've trained my whole life to be a Knight of God. Defeating you wonât be a problem, if you choose to beââ Shamrock shouldnât call his soulmate an idiot in their first conversation. ââstubborn.âÂ
His soulmate pinched the bridge of his nose. âIâm not talking about a fight, kid.â His hand fell to the string that connected them, reaching out along the intangibility of it, following the course so surely and steadily that Shamrock shivered without meaning to. He shivered again when that big hand came to rest on his heart. âIf I wanted to, I could sweet-talk you so nice. Tell you how special you are.â Shamrockâs heart fluttered under his hand, and it lifted away, Beckmanâs fingers trailing up the side of his neck and lacing into his hair. He let it happen, breath suddenly caught in his throat, eyes fixed on how the man had turned to face him, all of his attention on Shamrock. âTell you exactly how clever and mature you are.â Shamrockâs heart leaped again. He was seeing it, he understoodâof course he understood, he was Shamrockâs soulmateââKiss and tell and convince you to let that guard of yours allllllllll the way downâŚâ Beckman was leaning in, overwhelming Shamrockâs view of everything else, and he couldnât breathe, leaning in to meet himâ
The hand in his hair yanked, hard. Not like in the novels where a lover pulled another along, but painfully like he was a child wrestling with the children next door again. âOw!â
The hand fell away before Shamrock could break it, could grab back, could punish him for daring toââAnd then Iâd break your heart or slit your throat and go right out the window. Idiot.â Beckman pulled away, rolling to sit up, facing away from him.
ThisâShamrock was breathing hard now, jumping back up out of the chair, face furiously red. No wonder Father had warned him about this, ifââBut youâre my soulmate.â His missing piece, the end of his loneliness, tied to him by fate. The finest tribute offered to the gods-on-earth. No one had ever said he was allowed to be mean.
âSo? It still happens all the time.â Beckman still wasnât looking at him. âAnd youâre my soulmate, but that didnât stop you from kidnapping me.â
Shamrock would not lose his temper. He had been too well trained, he knew what was expected, he was just going to stand here and become calm and think of a suitable punishmentâ
âBet it wonât stop you from having me whipped, or thrown in a dungeon, or whatever else you need to do to tell yourself youâre the boss here, either. And it sure as hell wonât make it worth it.â
Shamrock wasâgoing to leave. And stand outside. Until he was calm again. Because any retaliation at this point would just prove this idiot right.Â
Shamrock had done what he needed to do. He had reclaimed his soul. Beckman wouldnât be going anywhere. And he wouldnât succeed in manipulating Shamrock into anything again, no matter what he tried.Â

In scarlet Rainmaker, what would Shanks do to keep Shamrock away from Beck?
First, carefully poke around to see what Shamrock knows about Beck. Like it's clear that Shamrock doesn't know where Beck is, or he'd been out there hunting for him to bring him back.
But does he know that he's on Shanks' crew?
After that, the safest course of action is simply don't say anything. Do some casual agreeing or whatever with Shamrock on getting that soulmate yet, so no one comes to the conclusion that Shanks might know something.
Ignorance is the best policy here. After all, hasn't poor Shanks just been among the scum of the earth for so long? Why would he know anything about soulmates?
heyyyy quick question. Does Shamrock still have the finger? Is he like. Holding onto it as some weird token? Does Benn find that weirdly hot or charming? Does this further increase Shanks' suffering around all this (that one's a trick question, all of this increases Shanks' suffering)
HAHA WELL. shamrock does not, while he has Benn, also have the finger. the finger has been sent off to a drop point for Shanks to receive. which he wonât because he took off from that route as soon as Bennâs vivre card started smoking. which means the preserved finger, packed in a box of salt, is still there when shamrock no longer has benn himself. so of course shamrock has to go GET it. canât let someone else get their hands on it. he has the bones cleaned of flesh and puts it in a little reliquary and everything and still has it on him when the tables turn and he gets got.
whoever searched him: hey, whatâs this?
benn: oh. [scoops it, doesnât elaborate]
shanks: benn, tell me that isnât what i think it is
benn: itâs not what you think it is
shanks, who DOES know bennâs tells: benn, tell me the TRUTH.
benn: well which is it? you have to pick one
benn, a freak, has been charmed. shanks is of course suffering Infinite Despairs.
Torture fic, does Benn have an advantage on reading Shamrock from knowing Shanks so well? It sounds like heâs claiming that but could be lying to put Shamrock in edge.
mmmmm, sort of. I do think Shamrock and Shanks have very different tells, because of their upbringings; what heâs claiming in the snippet i posted is that Shamrock is therefore at a disadvantage when dealing with him, even if Shamrock wants to think of himself as Shanksâs equal in combat. I think Benn can follow more of Shamrockâs tells; not necessarily because of knowing Shanks directly, but because theyâve fought in the past, and Benn has paid more attention to Shamrock than Shamrock has to him.
Beckman finding Shamrock hot but not Shanks is so funny. Shanks walking around shirtless. Itâs Tuesday to Beck. Shamrock borrowing Shanks clothes while his dry ( he showed up without warning and Shanks knocked him into the ocean). Somehow very hot and distracting. Beck needs a cigarette break when Shamrock starts trying to fix his hair.
this dovetails SO nicely with an ask i got from plotbunny-bundle about Shanks making requests of Shamrock before meetups. in my mind palace at least. Shamrock as guy who keeps getting put in circumstances.
and YES it's SO funny, and also like--scars aside, just kind of a thing that happens when you know identical twins? where they are very obviously different people when you get to know them. wheezing about Beck needing to go get a cigarette break. smokes them to calm down and he suddenly has a lot to calm down about because shanks does not fucking own any shirts that FIT and suddenly it's a problem when SHAMROCK wears them.

Ooh, I'm so curious about the OP Beckrock Dreamscape!
you know those scenarios where characters get trapped in a dreamworld of everything they ever wanted? yeah. this takes place in some world where Shamrock defected, somehow, to the Red Force.
It was morning in the Holy Land.
As Supreme Commander of the Godâs Knights, and the first-degree relative of an Elder Star, Shamrock had the privilege of suites within the heights of Pangaea Castle itself. They were in a low-status position on the Eastern outer wall, but that suited him just fine. The sunlight came in through crystal-paned windows, scattering scraps of rainbow across the far wall, where a curtain of ivy and jasmine flowed from well-tended planters and filled the room with a pleasant green scent.
There was a superb aura of peace over the room. Shamrockâs muscles had the warm, well-stretched feeling that came after a satisfying workout. The table was spread with platters of cured meats and smoked fish and pickled vegetables and fine sliced rolls and boiled eggs and cheese, pots of jams and pâtĂŠs standing open and adding to the kaleidoscope of rich scents. Steam rose from a silver carafe of coffee and a cast-iron teapot, enameled in blue.
Shanks was across the table, grinning at his own jokes, freshly bathed and dressed in uniformânot perfectly up to standards, of course, he never managed that himself. If they had any formal obligations today Shamrock would have to tuck his shirt properly under his collar and retie his loose cravat, and adjust the tangled fringe of his epaulettes, but here in a private setting they were just proof Shanks was still himself. Shamrockâs brilliant devil-may-care younger brother, rumpled and roguish and in love with life.
Beckman sat between them, without a single aspiration to formality. He wore a draping silk robe, black with swirling purple patterns, half falling off his shoulders. His hair fell loosely around his face, white strands catching the light like the crystal windows, enhancing the luminous quality of his face as he smiled slightly, eyes half closed like a lazy cat. From his left ear an earring dangled between the strands of hair, gold ring and chain trailing down to a large, pleasingly red gemstone. It hung at just the right spot to draw attention to the hickey standing out on his neck. The sight of the two things together gave Shamrock an enormous glow of satisfaction. A cigarette holder hung at a long angle in his grasp, tipping towards the floor, rising briefly as he draw in a content trickle of smoke.
Father was elsewhere, occupied with his responsibilities, but Shamrock was sure that they would see each other by the end of the day. Shamrock would be able to report on his recent successes, that he was living up to the responsibilities expected of him, and Father might even offer one of his rare and hard-earned gestures of professional approval. Here and now, there was only the satisfaction of everything as it should be.
âLost in thought, there?â Shanks asked, and Shamrock smiled as he spread pâtĂŠ on a pale roll.
âJust enjoying the moment,â he said.
It was morning in the Holy Land, and this moment was so perfect he thought it might last forever.

It was morning in the Holy Land.
Being Supreme Commander of the Godâs Knights, and the first-degree relative of an Elder Star, Shamrock was privileged enough to reside within the heights of Pangaea Castle itself. His suite was in a low-status position on the Eastern outer wall, but this was hardly a hardship, when the sunlight came in through crystal paned windows and threw thready scatterings of light across a green curtain of ivy and jasmine. The sight was a fantastic backdrop to Beckman, dressed in piratical clothes with his hair pulled back for battle, cigarette between his teeth, pistol tipped back on his shoulder and pointed at the ceiling.
âWhat the fuck?â he asked. âWhy am I here?â
Beckman, sitting at the table, hid one of his infuriating enigmatic smirks behind a gilt-rimmed coffee cup.
torturefic is what i figured would have to be my conceptual pitch/manifesto for benn beckman/shamrock as a ship since i forgot the power of just Spouting Some Bullshit online. it's in the pipeline. shamrock captures benn to use as bait to get shanks to come back and serve as a knight of god and then they get weird and horny and existential about it and at some point the situations reverse. i'm trying not to give spoilers because it IS in the WIP pipeline, but here's a first scene.

Shamrock made sure he was present when Benn Beckman woke up.Â
Containing the pirate had required some creativity. Linked wrist manacles were an infection risk so close to the amputation site; ankles were effective, but insufficient. The iron band around his waist, chained to the wall and the cuff on his right wrist seemed to be limiting his range of movement sufficiently, as he woke and tested the extent of his bonds.Â
Shamrock could see when he counted his fingers and came up short.Â
âFuck,â he said, wiggling his left hand. He still had most of it left. A gunman could shoot without a pinky fingerâthough Shamrock suspected his brother would want to commission a custom weapon, if he intended to keep the man around and operating at his previous utility.Â
âBenn Beckman,â Shamrock said. Bennâs eyes snapped to him with gratifying speed. âItâs been a while.â Years, since Shamrock had bothered to try to knock some sense into his brother and taken a bullet to the skull. It had taken an inconveniently long time to healâenough for Shanks to get his bearings back and emerge the victor of that little altercation. Unlike some of his colleagues, Shamrock would never stoop to revenge when there were more important things at stake, but he couldnât deny a certain satisfaction in the artistry of this. Benn had denied him his brother once. Now he would be the tool to Shamrock getting him back.Â
âShamrock.â He didnât bother with titles. One of the many charmingly rough quirks of pirates. âSo hard up for funds Iâm being sold for parts? Could swear your bosses wanted me in one piece. Not breathing.â
âMmm. They still do. But Iâm sure I can convince them of the benefits of an alternate arrangement. My brother should be receiving proof I have you in, ohâŚ.four days. I expect him to take another three tracking down the meeting spot I want him to find. You wonât be there to greet him, unless he takes some particular initiative in demonstrating his repentance.â Shamrock glanced up at the slope of the ceiling where the den-den mushi was recording. âYou and I are the only ones in this facility. There is no one else you can trap, or trick, or fight. The only access is by my lordâs seal. You will not be leaving this place unless I allow it.â Best not to give him too many details. Just enough to realize how hopeless his situation was.Â
Shamrock watched with some satisfaction as Benn considered this, clearly rotating plans in his mind. Testing his shackles again. Eyeing the blank wall behind Shamrock, trying to peer around the column in the center of the room he was chained to with no luck. He could see the grim acceptance in the set of his shoulders, the way his teeth worked around a nonexistent cigarette.Â
It was with rather less satisfaction that Shamrock felt his teeth turn sharp with haki and watched him attempt to rip open the vein at the inside of his elbow.Â
-
âStopâstop!â
Figarland Shamrock used a rough grip on Bennâs jaw and a hard squeeze on his brand-new amputation site to, painfully, wrestle apart teeth from flesh. His hand snaked up into Bennâs hair and gave him a hard shake, dragging him up until he was staring into familiar-unfamiliar snarling eyes.Â
Even without the scars, he looked nothing like Bennâs captain.Â
âIf youâre stupid enough to die in my keeping,â Shamrock gritted out. âI will cut your head from your body as a trophy and display it on a pike beside the gates of the Holy Land. I will taunt my brother with it until he arrives where I want him. You know he will.â
Benn did. He wasnât in any real hurry to die, eitherâif heâd wanted to bleed out from an elbow wound, heâd need to wait until he was alone, when Shamrock wouldnât arrive in enough time to stop him.Â
But heâd wanted to see how badly Shamrock actually wanted to keep him alive, and it was good to remind him that Benn could see the weaknesses with his âonly one guardâ approach. If Shamrock couldnât afford to leave him alone long enough to eat and sleep, as heâd need to, what would he do in response?Â
Benn needed information if he was getting out of this, and right now, that meant it was all about move and counter-move.Â
This was an interesting counter-move. Made it clear that he knew enough about how Shanks ticked to know he would show up to a provocation like thatâknew that Shanks and Benn were close enough Benn would be convinced by the possibility of staying alive to help him. See, this was why Benn hated this guyâs guts. He knew too much.Â
Well. He still didnât know enough.
âGuess I better bide my time, then.âÂ
Shamrockâs face curled in a sneer. Bastard. âYou arenât getting out of this. You still come second to my brother. He and I are matched in skill.â He gave a harder yank on Bennâs hair, tipping his chin back and driving his skull against the wall. âThereâs no place for you to end up but beneath me.â
Benn resisted the temptation to innuendo. Plenty of time for that later. âYou can try all you want to be as good as Shanks, but youâve got a pretty major disadvantage.âÂ
âAnd what is that.â
Benn allowed himself one lazy blink. âYou donât know any of my tells.â
The hand in his hair tightened again, and Benn allowed himself to groan into the pain. It tightened, further, and then released.Â
âYet,â Shamrock said, finally. âYet.â
Move. Counter-move. Thinking this over would be a good distraction from the pain still radiating down his arm.Â
Shanks was going to be furious. Hopefully the rest of the crew could keep him from doing something too stupid.Â
Beckrock idea. What if Shamrock had a matching scar to Shanksâ eye scar on his back and neck? What if Teach had nearly kicked Shanks and Shamrockâs ass? During the fight, Shamrock took a hit for Shanks, the blow that scarred Shanks took also off Shamrockâs head. Shamrock got back up eventually and they chased off Teach together.
Beck finding the scar when sleeping with Shamrock or messing with his hair. Neither brother had told him the story.
ehehehehehehehehehehehe i don't have much to add this just seems like a fun idea. love when a relationship involves Learning Things about a guy you didn't know before. love when it also turns into learning things about ANOTHER guy you know.
