Look at this…. crazy times.
So Cortenay-Comox was the riding to watch this year. When the general voting counts ended on May 9 there was a 9 vote difference between the BC Liberals and the NDP. Now there’s 148 votes in favour of the NDP after all the absentee ballots have been counted.
This is a big deal, because the BC Liberals needed 44 seats to be a majority government (again,ongoing since 1993). With this total, they’ve won only 43.
NDP has 41 seats and the Green Party holds 3 (good for them! They were hoping for at least 2 seats). I am really, really interested to see where this bizzar balance of power will take the government for the next 5 years.
It really now looks like we have, for the first time, something called a “hung parliament” where no one party really holds the majority of power.
Look at that difference in votes! 40.36% to 40.28% of the total. Less that 1% of total views between the two parties. Just… wow
Grasping at straws
Reminiscent of the period after the USA election but before the electoral college voted, everyone in BC is protesting the minority win of Christy Clark and the BC Liberals and waiting for the absentee ballots to be counted and awaiting the recounts. Some districts had a winner by as little as 9 votes. That district, where the NDP won by 9 votes houses a military base - the people who have been deployed are absentee voters and their votes being sent in can either solidify the NDP's win (yay!) or flip it Liberal which I believe would give the Liberals a majority government. Majority is 44+ seats and the Liberals are at 43, NDP at 41 and Green at 3. My only hope is the House finds her unable to run a minority government and the leader ask John Horgan to step up and run a minority NDP government. There they are: the straws. I'm grasping at them too. The next thing that could happen is the Liberals making a deal with the Greens and forming a majority that way. The leader of the Greens said he supports Christy Clark which I think is a slap in the face of every Green Party member. The Liberals are against almost everything the Greens are for! The Greens are basically as left as you can go unless you actually vote for the Communism party. It's more likely they'd work with the NDP and form a majority over the Liberals that way. Alas, another star that I am grasping at. Lives are at stake here. The province isn't just Vancouver, we're not all foreign investors who can spend over a million dollars on a three hundred square foot condo to launder our money and as a bonus gain an investment that will only appreciate with time. The education of our children is at stake. This is the most corrupt government we've had. The amount of shady deals they've made is astounding. I can't believe they got the most seats. This isn't possible. And that's another way this election is reminiscent of the USAs - how did so many people vote for someone who is a human disaster?
2017 BC provincial election – why I voted Green
I voted for Keli Westgate (Green Party) because I felt she would make the best public servant for our region.
Like Scott Anderson said:
"If anyone stood out head and shoulders above everyone else, it's Keli of the Green Party. She was more articulate, more poised, and far more prepared than anyone else there."
The demographics in Vernon, BC currently favor parties like the BC Liberals. However, there's a growing number of people here that want progressive representation in Victoria. The tide is changing.
