Gods, writing that Pirates write up, has me reminded how even 10yo me was so annoyed about the Chosen One trope. It was probably one of the first tropes I actively understood as a trope, and I hated it so much, because I realized that I liked heroes more, who had agency, who were there because they wanted to be there.
And the Chosen One trope is in many ways such a curse on pop culture. It is a cage, and a lot of recent stories are actively negotiating with it, but few media actually can escape it.
My favorite inversion of it will forever be Basquash with: "The actual chosen could come because she did not receive healthcare, as she is the exploited underclass of capitalism. So the world would end, if it was not for everyone else going: 'Fuck it, we will save the world anyway.'"
