The common refrain is, you know, characters doomed to play the role in the story they're pigeonholed as, heroes and villians, yadda yadda, mid-2010s "subversive" Pixar film 101. This is known. There are certainly works that are singular enough or morally simplistic enough that this is a reasonable approach. It's actually a little different with superheroes, though, in fact it's almost the opposite problem- that your role in the story is actually extremely fluid and subject to revision but it doesn't matter. A "superhero" can do something they should die in jail for and five years later, it'll still be canon but like, come on, why are you bringing it up? Juggernaut's on the X-Men now. Not even his first face-turn. How long will that stick? When it stops sticking how much will it inform his character? It's not really the storybook princess-in-a-tower kind of narrative determinism, it's the determinism of every possible outcome being weightless. Animal Man's finale with Grant Morrison talking to Buddy understood that the real horror was centered in that weightlessness. Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow understood that, with Mr. Mxyzptlk. To an extent the original premise of The Boys was rooted in that weightlessness. It's gotta be about the weightlessness
