Australians and Canadians are election buddies! Heres hoping to the most positive possible result!
MPs overwhelmingly vote to legalise same-sex marriage, setting off immediate celebrations.
Same-sex marriage will become legal in Australia after a historic bill was passed in the House of Representatives.
The lower house had been widely expected to pass the legislation, after the bill drew broad cross-party support.
The Senate voted decisively in favour of the legislation last week.

Labor Party leader Bill Shorten praised the vote, calling it “a fabulous day to be an Australian.”
Australians overwhelmingly voted in favor of legalizing same-sex marriage in a postal survey on Tuesday.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that 61.6 percent of voters in the national postal survey approved a change to Australia’s current law. Same-sex marriage has been banned in the country since 2004.
Just 38.4 percent opposed the change.
79.5 percent of eligible Australian voters cast a vote in the survey, according to. Every Australian state and territory had a majority of “yes” votes in the survey.
The vote does not automatically legalize same-sex marriage. After the results were announced, Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull called on Australia’s parliament to pass a bill that would allow same-sex couples to be married.
"Now it is up to us, here in the Parliament of Australia, to get on with it, to get on with the job the Australian people have tasked us to do, and get this done. This year. Before Christmas," Turnbull said.

sad and worried

(they want a strong emphasis on getting kids into STEM but then cut funding to CSIRO, unis and other places that would employ those scientists forcing job cuts... yeah strong economy my butt) this is the only auspoli thing youll see from me. i’m too tired. and salty time for bed more nemo goes back and more crackship tomorrow <3 love and peace to you all *offers virtual hugs*
Esoteric Australian political humour: Stoner Sloth vs Tony Abbot
Here's the joke: Stoner Sloth is a disastrous, tin-eared anti-marijuana ad campaign from the New South Wales Department of Premier and Cabinet.
Its slogan, "You're worse on weed," combined with images of a giant anthropomorphic sloth making Chewbacca noises in awkward social settings has spurred a lot of remixes.
Next: Tony Abbott is the disastrous, tin-eared former Prime Minister of Australia, ousted in a night-of-the-long-knives party coup after it became clear that his style of governance would cost the party the next election.
Abbott made numerous gaffes during his tenure in politics, but few are quite so notorious as his bizarre interview with a journalist who wanted to know what Abbott meant when he was asked what he meant when he said "shit happens" when asked about Australian soldiers who died on deployment.
Combine the two and you get this: Tony Abbot, giant sloth. A marvel of esoteric -- but hilarious -- Australian political mashup comedy.
