Plan: Day Off. Woke up for a 7am appt at the PT. We did yet another round of dry-needling...today hurt the worst of all of them. It brought tears to my eyes, and I struggled not to curse out of the pain. She's so understanding; said we're finally getting down into the deepest knots and they're the ones she needs to focus on now, to prevent the IT beast from lighting up again later on. Praying we get things worked out soon 😰 After that was my new normal...nannying 8:30-1:15, then the store 1:30-7:30. Went home to eat and finish working on the trim in my room.
It looks worse in person. ;P
Today was my second Astym treatment and for some dumb reason I thought she might take it easy on my because of all the leftover bruising from Friday.. HA! No such luck. If anything, she was more relentless. I was wincing and gripping the sides of the table almost the entire time. You can't tell much in this picture, but my ankle is starting to darken all the way around because she really focused on that area today. NOT FUN.
The only good part about it is the soothing, gentle leg massage and stretch that she gives my leg when she's finished.
After the torture, we worked on all the usual hip exercises, plus a new elastic band walk. Same wide-legged, squatty position but traveling forward instead of side to side:
I also did a ton of toe taps (for my shins) and calf raises. Those hurt like heck because of the bruising.
Speaking of bruising, any idea why it's only visible on the inner, fatty part of my calf? I'm extremely tender all over, but there's not much bruising visible on the other side of my leg. Somebody educate me! ;)
Yesterday was my 11th physical therapy appointment.
My physical therapist decided that last week was probably going to be my last ASTYM session. She said she might still do it periodically if my leg seemed tight. But I consider that progress. My leg feels less tight, I think walking is easier (at least around the house), and my scars feel like regular skin and no longer like there's 14 layers of scar tissue. Yesterday I just did some run-of-the-mill physical therapy, trying to strengthen my core and leg muscles. 10 minutes on the recumbent elliptical, then lots of leg lifts with 3 pound weights on my legs, side lifts, some bridges, and finally some stand up sit downs. Or "no plopping," as she called it. I protested. I've been plopping for years now. But she said it would strengthen my legs so I'm down. Husband says they're like squats with a chair. Sounds good til I can do real squats.
So physical therapy is going good. I guess? But my body is revolting against me. I think my last pump site is infected. There's some sort of weird itchy burny rash on my neck. My ear hurts. My face has decided to erupt. No, body. No. This is not what you're supposed to do. Husband wants me to go the ER because apparently he likes wasting time. I don't think any of these ailments are emergencies and so I will be calling my doctor Monday morning. Hopefully they can see me in a timely manner and I can also request some blood work to be done. I want to know where my TSH level is at and I also want to see if there's a test to see where I am in my menstrual cycle. Does that exist? I saw an episode of Law & Order: SVU where the guy came in and raped women and made them pee in a cup so he could see where they were in their cycle and then he'd come back when they were ovulating and rape them again. So is there a blood test that can tell me that? Since I'll already be getting blood drawn, you know. Maybe I'm just crazy and things on TV aren't real and can't really be done. That could be the real facts here, yo.

Acupuncture and cupping
Today I had my first acupuncture appointment with my sister in law. I have never been needled before so it was such a different experience. I have been getting ASTYM for my upper back. I had some scar tissues built up from riding horses and from bad posture.
She took my pulse in a few different places and deciphered that there was not harmony throughout my body. She said that my digestion was stronger than my heart or lungs. I don't know exactly what modalities she used but it was very new and interesting for me. There was only one spot that hurt and that was my lower to mid back on the left. She said that I was extremely tight and it was nothing to worry about. The pain would only be temporary.
Her goal is to try a few different modalities on me within the next few months. She wants to use me as a little bit of an experiment. I am okay with that if she thinks that she can make me feel awesome. Also, she said that she knows some ways to "sorta stop aging." Hey, if she can have me live this 26 year old's body several years/decades from now... I'm DOWN!
Physical Therapy!
I am so glad that I got into see Dr. Laura at Sports Reaction Center twice this week. She truly has magical hands. My back seems so much looser. She has been doing ASTYM and I am a huge believer!!!!! She has loosened my upper back so much. It has increased my mobility during swimming and helped me open up my stride because I'm not wasting energy guarding my shoulder muscles. Also, since she is a runner, I get great running advice. Special Bonus! :)
Physical Therapy Update
I completed my second week of Physical Therapy. Today Alison did Astym on my ITB... I heard rave reviews and at the same time, that it hurt like a beyotch. Both are valid descriptions.
ASTYM treatment is a physical therapy treatment that regenerates healthy soft tissues (muscles, tendons, etc.), and eliminates or reduces unwanted scar tissue that may be causing pain or movement restrictions.
...and since scar tissue is the story of my life...well, I think this will be a lasting love affair. I could already feel a difference when I got on the foam roller. My ITB wasn't screaming at me as I rolled over it.
The best part about this treatment is you continue doing what you are doing...get on the bike, swim, run, lift, etc. You actually don't want to lay around because then the body will regenerate the same way, but taking on your activities, your body learns to regrow healthy tissue as you utilize full range of motion, without the restriction of scar tissue and limited mobility. (Or something like that...)
I'll let you know how it goes...
