Performance roles vs alters in programmed DID
For me the roles came first. During trafficking I was filmed over 6–9 years in different series. The content shifted as I aged, but the characters stayed the same. I was expected to embody them again and again. Think of them like costumes:
• the innocent or cherub
• the confused but sexualized one
• the provocative one
Alters are not the costumes or the lines. They are people who had to survive those roles. Sometimes a little was shoved into “innocent,” but that does not make her a performer. She is just a child who was used.
The performance alters are the ones who developed to manage the acting itself:
• the Doll (the puppet, numb, just keeps the show going)
• the Demon (handles aggression and sexual intensity)
• the Pet (handles obedience and sexuality differently)
Conclusion
So:
• A role is the part the outside world demanded
• An alter is the person inside who carried it
Sometimes they map neatly, sometimes they do not.
Basically, performance alters were the tacticians of survival, created to make the impossible doable, even when the cost was us.
