Summary:Ā Jack Drake's Amex black card gets declined for the first time on an ordinary Thursday evening.
Comments: Absolutely loved this. Tim tries so hard to deal, and the author really makes us feel Timās creeping shame as he tries to figure out how to feed himself, including taking pizza crusts from trash cans. But what I really loved about this fic was Dick - who watches Tim white knuckle through a fear toxin exposure like itās nothing, who preps various rants at Bruce because whyĀ whyĀ does Tim feel like he canāt just ask for help? Timās going through it, but you can tell so much that heās loved.

Thank you again for the absolute glory that has been NLTS Part 1. I have enjoyed every word immensely so far, and can't wait to see more of it when you pick it up again. In the interim, if you're still accepting ficlet prompts for this verse, I will surprise absolutely nobody by saying that I would love to see more of Astarion having a bad time, if it so moves you.
Consider me so moved!
This is safe for work, technically, but the vibes are unpleasant. Content warnings for references to offscreen torture, and for Cazador being, well, himself. This is set sometime shortly after the end of Part One.
~~~
Cazador trails a claw down each knob of Astarionās spine. Itās a worse feeling, somehow, than the pliers. āMy foolish child,ā he says. āWhat am I to do with you, if you will not learn?ā
Answering is a trap. Not answering is a trap. If Astarion still had his fingernails, heād dig them into his palms; as it is, clenching his fists only sends raw bolts of pain shooting up his arms, and he bites his lip to keep from crying out. It doesnāt matter, really. This is going to go the same way that itās gone the last ā however many times. Astarionās lost track of how often Cazadorās gone through this cycle of compelling answers out of him, punishing Astarion when the answer displeases, and then, once Astarionās screamed enough to satisfy him, returning to the same damned questions as before.
If Cazador wants a different answer, he should let Astarion bloody lie about it for once, but then Astarion wouldnāt be bringing all these punishments on himself, now, would he?
Cazador seizes Astarion by the hair, yanks his chin up from the table, forces Astarion to look into the red depths of his eyes. āI ask you again,ā he says. āDo you still love Wyll Ravengard?ā
The command hooks itself in his chest, drags the answer out of Astarionās unwilling throat. It isnāt fair that Cazador gets to hear this, over and over, when Astarion never got the chance to tell Wyll ā
āYes,ā he says. He canāt look away. He swallows, braces himself as best he can for Cazadorās next eruption of fury. (He can never brace himself enough, even after all these years.)
A cold smirk curls on Cazadorās lips, this time. āPerhaps we should go about this lesson a different way,ā he says. āI cannot help but think back to the last time you fancied yourself in love. It was during our first decade together, was it not?ā
No. Not the tomb. Not again ā āPlease, Master,ā he begs, āplease donāt make me go back there, please, Iāll be good, I promise, I swear Iāll obey āā
āYour promises are as empty as your head,ā Cazador snaps. āBut you misunderstand me. I was thinking not of the tomb, but of that darling boy of yours. You were dreadfully fond of him, I recall.ā
He ā yes. He had been. He remembers fragments: warm, callused hands; a dark mop of curls; the softened consonants of southern Faerun. His trade had something to do with travel, didnāt it? A sailor, perhaps, or a merchant, or a caravan guard?Ā
āWhat was his name, again?ā Cazadorās eyes glitter with malice. He gives Astarionās curls another wrench. āSurely you remember, donāt you? You gave up so much for him, after all. He must have been important to you. You must have cherished him, in your way.ā
Astarion furrows his brow, runs through the ruined corridors of his memory for any sign, any signal. He would have known the boyās name. He must have known the boyās name.Ā
āPerhaps there is some pity left for you in me yet, boy,ā Cazador says, in a tone that indicates anything but. āTell me that manās name, and I shall allow you to return to the dormitories for the night.ā
Astarion swallows, his throat working soundlessly. There must be more he remembers. He forces himself to cast his mind back. His name began with a P, didnāt it? Or a V, maybe. Was it a T? And he had freckles across his nose. Astarion canāt recall their color, or the exact tone of his skin, but he kissed those freckles, and the boy laughed. Or does that memory belong to another man, another year?
At last, Cazador releases his grip on Astarionās hair. Astarion presses his cheek to the table, stares at a bloodstain on the walls.
āOh, my child,ā Cazador says. He strokes the curve of Astarionās cheek with his thumb. āWe are eternal, you and I. For creatures such as we, who know true permanence, these fancies cannot last. That boy from centuries ago is dust now, forgotten to all who knew him ā including you. And so, too, shall Wyll Ravengard fade, until he is but the shadow of a thought.ā
Astarion wants to deny it, wants to shake his head, wants to slap Cazadorās hand away. But with the weight of time bearing on him like this, itās impossible to move.
āHow fortunate, then, that you shall never fade,ā Cazador says. āAnd neither will I. Now, then. Shall we begin again?ā
... I know, I know, promnis week is over. But I still want to finish my prompts! I was traveling for like, 4 days via train, plane and car... I finally have a place to draw. Also, wifi.
instead of doing homework i binge read running behindĀ Ā by @asidian and treated myself to these doodles after i finished my own workĀ
xoxo thanks for the distraction it was a tasty treat
I canāt help myself so here is a bit more art for @asidianās FFXV fic, Running Behind.Ā This is the most fun Iāve ever had with fanfic and I canāt thank Asidian enough for letting me participate in making this thing into the thing it wound up being. ā„
asidian replied to your post: ā¦ā¦ā¦. are people seriously upset that SEās happy...
I am seriously upset that it seems to involve Ardyn, honestly. Like⦠he literally orchestrated the destruction of all of Insomnia, the death of Noctās father and people they all loved, strung Noct along and toyed with him, tortured Prompto, and was responsible for every bad thing that happened to those boys. Seeing him there for what looks like itās supposed to be a happy scene feels like some weird dystopian brainwash AU that frankly squicks me a little.
Yeah I mean, at least thatās a reasonable thing to be upset about?Ā Thatās based on canon?Ā My complaint was that people were so upset about it specifically because Noct and Luna were together and had kids, which is the obvious thing that would happen in a canon happy ending.
I can see that square might want a redemption story for Ardyn and Noct was definitely somewhat sympathetic to him in the endgame so thereās some hints there, but yeah, heās a bad dude.
