Petronilla of Aragon Abdicates and Passes the Crown to Alfonso II
On July 18, 1157, Queen Petronilla of Aragon formally stepped aside from ruling and passed the throne to her young son, Alfonso II, marking a significant transition in the history of the Crown of Aragon. Petronilla had inherited the Kingdom of Aragon as a child and became central to the union between Aragon and the County of Barcelona through her marriage to Count Ramon Berenguer IV.
Petronilla’s abdication allowed her son Alfonso to inherit a powerful realm that combined Aragonese territories with the growing influence of Barcelona. Although she retired from political life, her role had been crucial in establishing the dynastic foundation that would shape the future expansion of the Crown of Aragon across the Mediterranean.
Alfonso II became the first king to rule the united Aragonese-Catalan territories in his own right. His reign would begin a period of growth and consolidation that helped transform the Crown of Aragon into one of the most important powers of medieval Europe.

The Battle of Malta: Roger of Lauria’s Naval Victory
OTD July 8, 1283, the brilliant Aragonese admiral Roger of Lauria led the fleet of the Crown of Aragon to a decisive victory against an Angevin naval force near Malta. The battle was part of the wider conflict known as the War of the Sicilian Vespers, a struggle between the Aragonese and the Angevin rulers of southern Italy and Sicily.
Roger of Lauria’s skillful tactics helped defeat the fleet sent by the Charles of Anjou to suppress the rebellion on Malta. The victory strengthened Aragonese control in the Mediterranean and established Lauria as one of the most celebrated naval commanders of the Middle Ages.
