Round 2a: The Price Family - Part 3
Inspired by Mabel’s encouragement and from hearing about her passion, Frances decided to try out pottery for herself, but her first few attempts did not meet with great success.
As summer continued Tabitha grew and took much of Martha’s time even with Harriet’s help. When they celebrated her toddler birthday, Fanny and Mabel joined them again. They were also joined by George, who made excuses for Eliza, finally sharing with his friends that Eliza was now with child herself.
Round 2a: The Price Family - Part 2
That evening the family dined together, David shared that the mine was going well and Frances talked of her walks with Mabel. ‘She lives with her cousin Fanny, she’s a seamstress.’
‘I met her, she seemed like she’s successful and talented.’ Martha said. 'Perhaps soon we might invite them.'
'When you have had the baby.' David told her, curtailing his wife's passion for company with practical caution.
Round 2a: The Price Family - Part 1
In the early hours before David left for the mine he and Martha relaxed together, ‘There was a young lady at the market,’ he told her, ‘Frances talked to her for a long time.’
‘Frances talked to her?’ Martha asked him, ‘Our daughter? Without an introduction?’
‘Indeed, she seemed to find her rather charming,’ David smiled, ‘we ate together afterwards.’
‘And what was your opinion of her?’ Martha asked. ‘A kind young lady.’ David smiled again, before kissing his wife and departing for work, leaving her with much food for thought.

Round 2a: The Acton Family - Part 4
Warning: Throughout this round I continue to explore Eliza and George's feelings about having a baby and Eliza's miscarriage.
Over the next day Eliza started to feel unwell again, nauseous and exhausted, she once again asked Susan to sit with her.
‘How are you feeling ma’am?’ she asked her mistress.
‘Weak, sick, terrified,’ Eliza admitted, ‘What if it goes wrong again?’
‘There is nothing to indicate that.’
‘But I have been so sick.’
‘Many women are,’ Susan reassured her, ‘my mother used to help women with their pregnancies as well, rest, you are lucky to be able to do that.’
Round 2a: The Acton Family - Part 3
Warning: Throughout this round I continue to explore Eliza and George's feelings about having a baby and Eliza's miscarriage.
‘How are you feeling?’ George asked Eliza at breakfast.
‘The same, I am not with child George.’ She told him coldly.
‘We can try again.’ He comforted her.
‘I thought you wanted to wait.’ She pointed out.
‘I was,’ he sighed, ‘I am,’ he paused, ‘concerned for you.’ They finished their meal in silence, again unable to express or process their feelings.
That day, more determined and desperate than ever Eliza went to market to buy the same herbs that Susan had given her before.
Round 2a: The Acton Family - Part 2
Warning: Throughout this round I continue to explore Eliza and George's feelings about having a baby and Eliza's miscarriage.
George considered, there was one part of what Eliza was saying that did make sense, they did need to invest in the land, they did need to farm the land. Their gardener Alfred had been taking excellent care of the garden, it was thriving more than George had expected in the summer sun. George had been surveying the land and had chosen a site not far from the main house; he called Alfred into his study to make the proposition. ‘Would you consider the position?’ he asked after he had laid out the plans, a farmhouse on the estate with a farmyard that Alfred would take care of.
‘I would work hard,’ Alfred said, hardly daring to believe his luck at such an offer, yesterday he had been a gardener, well he still was, George did not quite yet have the finances for the investment.
‘What would you propose that we farm?’
Alfred considered, ‘Chickens, wheat, another livestock animal – perhaps pigs.’
George nodded, ‘Important foundations, could we do something more specialised?’ He asked, ‘Tea, or perhaps a vineyard or orchard?’
‘The soil would be good for an orchard, and perhaps vines, but not tea, we are too high in the hills.’ George smiled, he had chosen well to invest in Alfred, he was knowledgeable, ‘Thank you, we will talk again when the finances are settled.’
