we talk about character foil within the tmi gang a lot, but i think we underestimate how alec and simon was written to mirror each other role, from a character standpoint and their role within the story, especially in city of bone
they're both the quiet, reserved, ""nice"" puzzle of a love triangle (jace-clary-simon, clary-jace-alec), the safe, the familiar, albeit non-exciting option, at least from the leading character's pov. while the romance bloom bright and burn between clary and jace, simon and alec feel threatened by this new element, the alluring unpredictability that forces them to confront the "not yet friend" feeling they supress
remember when simon use alec bow to shoot at a demon? that's a turning point for both of their character, simon being perceived as more competent and alec recognizes the error of his behavior and stop being such an ass
also, you can't deny alec and simon often get told by others that the one they're dating are "out of their league"
