Derek Taylor recalls the Beatles 1964 US tour, and the only concert he ever missed.
JOHN GILLILAND: I think probably I'd like to find out first of all, let's talk now, if we may, about that first tour over here with the Beatles - tell me about it. High points, etc.
DEREK TAYLOR: The high points really were always the concerts, because that was really where it was. There was only one I ever missed. And that was because I went out to dinner with Brian [Epstein] in New Orleans to Antoine’s because he'd read the book, Dinner at Antoine's. And I found it a very frightening place because, you know, they’re insane about their food. And waiters who believe their food to be a sacrament always frightened the life out of me. So it took me a great deal longer to eat it than it should have done. There was no pleasure. So we missed that concert. But I never missed a Beatle show because that was really what we were there for. And it justified all the insanity of the day just to be at the concert at night. And it was a very, very, - I mean, it was an extraordinary month.
Antiques: A rare collection
For many of us, the holidays mean fancy food and drink. For your cold-weather (?) libation needs, look no further than Special Collections & Archives for a recipe for a delicious treat.
In 1896, antiques dealer Waldhorn Co. published a small advertisement called “Antiques: A rare collection from old Creole families.” The tiny pamphlet includes poetry by Eugene Field and Mrs. M.E.M. Davis as well as an ode to a drink called Café Brûlot by James A. Morosa. Morosa was inspired to write the verse after sampling a concoction made by Dorothy Dix, one of the first advice columnists and an employee of the New Orleans Daily Picayune.
The drink is a spiced mix of brandy and coffee–perfect for warming up on a chilly winter night. Café Brûlot Diabolique (Devilishly Burned Coffee), as it is formally called, was developed by Jules Alciatore, proprietor of Antoine’s Restaurant, in the 1890s.
View the entire pamphlet in the Louisiana Digital Library or come to Special Collections & Archives to see it in person.
Dear Gus,
This is you sitting with Papou at Antoine’s, which is a restaurant that has been around since 1840. Our waiter was a man named Sterling who has worked at Antoine’s for over 50 years. You had a bottle of milk, but I had charbroiled oysters, roasted duck confit, bread pudding, and 25-cent lemon drops. We were both satisfied.
