A stunning collection of 21 Original copperplate engravings , Nuremberg, 1797. Originally from the Dactyliotheca Stoschiana , a publication with engravings of the vast collection of engraved gems ( intaglios ) accumulated by the renowned Prussian antiquarian and collector of engraved gems , Baron Phillip Von Stosch ( 1691 - 1757 ) Engraved by I. Nufsbiegel the renowned German engraver of the late 18th century. The Roman numeral XXVI at the top right indicates the plate number within the specific volume. In the 18th century, these publications were groundbreaking because they treated ancient gems as individual works of art rather than mere historical illustrations. Stosch's massive collection of approximately 3,500 gems was later catalogued by Johann Joachim Winckelmann in 1760 and eventually acquired by King Frederick the Great of Prussia.
