Hadrian & Antinous / Roman Sculpture
The Roman emperor Hadrian died #onthisday in AD 138. Hadrian was a champion of Egyptian and Greek culture and visited Egypt in AD 130. During this visit, his Greek lover Antinous drowned in the Nile. Hadrian later founded a new city, Antinoopolis, at the site of his death. Antinous was venerated as the god Osiris-Antinous and this new saviour god became popular across the empire.
