To be blank and honest, I really liked Season 6 for the entertainment factor, but didn't think it was all too accurate and played closely on stereotypes of our culture, rather than our culture in itself.
Lack of official status of any language leads to English being the 'de facto' official language of the UK. This absence of legislation leads to discriminatory policy, denying other indigenous languages equal status in the UK, thereby discriminating against speakers of those languages.
This petition would like to see the following languages recognised as official in UK law: Scottish Gaelic, Irish Gaelic, Scots (both of Scotland and Ulster), Welsh, Cornish, Angloromani, Shelta, British Sign Language, Irish Sign Language and English. Co-official status in law brings UK laws with a linguistic focus in line with the European Charter of Human rights: Article 5 - Right to Liberty and Security, Clause 2 Article 14 - Prohibition of Discrimination Protocol Number 12, Article 1 - General prohibition of discrimination, Clause 1.
so tired of people telling me I can't say the word Gypsy because it's a slur. this is a word hundreds of thousands of people use to identify themselves and has been in use since the 16th century (first arrival of Gypsies in England). usually it's gorja social justice types who tell me I can't say it but today it was a Romani, who even admitted that we aren't from the same ethnic group, yet insisted that we change the name we use for ourselves.
for those unaware the term "gypsy" (or "gipsy/gipsie" if you're an old codger) is a misnomer that originates from the word "gipcyan" because people believed that gypsies were Egyptian. nowadays we know that they originated from Northern India. regardless, this wasn't necessarily a slur, rather just a way of identifying them (even if it was wrong). just because the word "gypsy" can be used in a derogatory way doesn't mean the word itself is derogatory.
realistically you cannot revoke this label from an ethnic group and it's downright insulting to migrate to England and demand that 0.1% of the population do things your way because you don't like the term; really this argument becomes all the more bizzare when Romanis continue to protest being grouped in with Gypsies, proving that they already have their own term from themselves that they're happy with and that they have nothing to do with us, so really they have no reason to get so upset.
if we get rid of the word Gypsy then what are we supposed to be called? Romani? Well then that'd be just incorrect. Traveller? Well then people would mistake us for Irish Travellers. even if you were to somehow convince every Gypsy in England to change their label, what would you change it to? now we've followed this line of question let's take a step back and realise that we're talking about forcibly changing the language used by a minority group already facing extinction and recognise that this is the least of our problems.
government legislation has been progressively eradicating the nomadic way of lifestyle in Britain since the 1950s. this debate over a word is one big nothingburger, and if any of you truly cared about Gypsies, Travellers, or Romani, you would actually do something instead of start debates on the Internet.
