‘alpha voice’ (or ‘the Voice’) is the colloquial name for the phenomenon where a spike in certain alpha pheromones, a ‘snarling’ or ‘warning’ call, chemical bonds, and a trusting relationship result in an alpha’s command being near-irresistible to their bonded mate, packmates, or pups. alpha voice may be effective on feral omegas, though it may instead be met with aggression. a feral alpha is far more likely to respond to an unfamiliar alpha’s Voice with aggression or violence than submission. feral alphas rarely have access to the Voice.
who does it work on?
the Voice is most effective on an alpha’s bonded omega. in general, omegas are most intensely affected by the Voice, and a bite-bonded omega mate is more intensely affected than a scent-bonded omega mate.
an alpha’s bonded beta will be affected by the voice, and will experience physiological and psychological discomfort when trying to resist it.
an alpha’s bonded alpha mate may be affected by the voice, but will likely experience less difficulty resisting it.
alpha packmates may be affected by the Voice less intensely than beta or omega packmates. the intensity of the effect may increase if the alpha using their Voice has been accepted by the pack as its Alpha (post on pack structure forthcoming).
omega and beta packmates are likely to experience discomfort when choosing to resist the Voice, with omegas facing greater difficulty than betas.
typically, pups are unable to resist a pack alpha’s voice. they may be affected by an unfamiliar alpha’s Voice, though intentionally using the Voice on an unfamiliar pup is taboo at best, and if the pup comes to harm because of it, the alpha will face more severe criminal charges than if they harmed the pup without use of the Voice.
why does alpha voice exist?
alpha voice evolved among early humans as a means for alphas to maintain safety and order. when packs were nomadic, alphas and betas were often scouts to ensure that paths were safe. if unexpected danger arose, the alpha would use their Voice to draw the pack’s immediate attention, silence them in order to hide, or bring them to a halt.
alpha voice was an effective tool for corralling pups during voyages. pups tend to wander or chase one another during play, and alpha voice ensured that the pups could be drawn back to the pack if they moved too far from safety.
how does each dynamic react to the Voice?
for non-pack, non-feral betas or omegas, the voice may be met with fear, agitation, aggression, or irritation. they may growl or snarl, and omegas may hiss or whine. to attempt to use the Voice on self-possessed non-pack betas or omegas is akin to attempting to grab or shove someone, and is a form of harassment.
for non-pack, non-feral alphas, the voice will almost always be met with posturing. the offended alpha may growl, snarl, or swing at the offending alpha.
pack alphas:
may huff, rumble, or click
may posture weakly, especially if there is not a strong relationship between them and the alpha who used the Voice
if they choose to submit to the alpha who used the Voice, it will likely be with a slight incline of the head rather than baring the neck
pack betas:
may huff, click, hum, or softly growl
tend to respond verbally, especially if they are reticent to submit to the alpha
if they choose to submit to the alpha, it is with a tilt of the jaw and slight baring of the neck. the neck may be more exposed with a closer, more trusting relationship
pack omegas:
tend to hum, sigh, whine, or purr
may respond with visible discomfort (e.g. recoiling, frowning, hissing) if the relationship with the alpha is weak
if they choose to submit by the alpha, it is with a bared neck. generally, to a non-mate alpha, this is done by turning the head and looking away rather than angling it to the side
pack pups tend to respond similarly to omegas, regardless of their sex. the closer they become to their adult cycles, they will begin to respond more in accordance with their sex
bonded mates:
bonded alphas tend to respond like other pack alphas
bonded betas tend to respond like pack omegas
bonded omegas tend to respond more intensely. they bare their necks by angling their heads to the side or back, exposing their throats most visibly. they may whine, keen, or purr, and the more intense the spike in alpha pheromones, the more dramatic the response will be. the soap opera dramatic rendition of an omega responding to their bonded alpha is for them to sink to their knees and cry, whine, or purr for their alpha.
Max needing to hold Charles back so he doesn’t jump GP or do something stupid. GP did what he needed to keep Max safe and it was extreme circumstances and Max is very glad that GP was quick on his feet and got him to calm down before Max causes a collision or something. The team has their hands full with the FIA who wants GP investigated for abuse of power. GP is the only calm one in the situation and Max dives into his arms for a hug after the race. He’s so grateful GP did what he needed to do. Charles is not happy though, he hates that he can smell GP on Max, he hates that an alpha used their alpha voice on his omega. And he hates that he couldn’t help. Max forces Charles to be civil and have dinner with him and GP a few days later so the air can be cleared. GP apologizes if he overstepped in Charles’ eyes but he makes it very clear if the situation happened again, he will do the same thing.
I love Max jumping into GP's arms after, he's so completely overwhelmed and thankful. Max hasn't got a clue that its a huge deal and that everyone is going crazy but he suddenly notices all the strange looks he is getting and he's ushered off to be checked over and spoken to by a medic.
I can imagine Charles smelling GP's scent even after Max showers - perhaps its psychological but he just can't help but be worried about how close Max is with his Alpha race engineer.
Both Charles and GP want the best for Max but they are definitely not seeing eye to eye on this!
I'm a bit new to the whole A/B/O thing, can you explain what the alpha voice is and what it purpose is?
alpha voice refers to a sort of intonation that alphas can use that easily pulls focus towards the alpha and is a very powerful persuasion mechanism.
it's often used so that the pack alpha can rally the troops, but some modern settings include a bratty omega beta, towards children, at work etc... It's not quite hypnosis, but if an alpha uses alpha voice on you you'll probably do what they say. The alpha voice does not work on other alphas, but it does work on all children pre-presentation.
It can be turned on and off, it is not an alpha's normal speaking voice, and takes practice to really get a hang of.

In my Omegaverse Omegas who have Alpha siblings have more resistance to Alpha Voice (because otherwise Alpha siblings would Win all their Fights and that is UNACCEPTABLE) Omegas who DON'T have Alpha siblings tend to be more submissive (though I have one who fakes being submissive as hell because he's manipulative and likes to make people underestimate him, and another who has an Alpha sister but is genuinely That Submissive that he never built up that resistance... but of course he ALSO has anxiety and his big sister has always protected him from every possible danger so he never HAD to develop it either)
Interesting headcanon, Anon! I love protective alpha siblings, they are adorable.
I imagine that omega men don't thicken their voices like alpha and beta men (thanks to the estrogen in the body). Although I don't know how thick an alpha man's voice can become. It makes me have a little trouble imagining what their voice would be like, I think from high to low-pitched (it's kind of hard to find real-life examples).
I agree with that. Alpha voices can get really deep due to the whole Alpha Voice thing, but Omega males, they'd probably have very soft and feminine voices, they don't thicken at all.
I think the best comparison I can offer in order to imagine them is "think of female voice actors that voice male characters", for exemple Len Kagamine or Ciel Phantonhive or even the Utaite VipTenchou. It's quite androgenous leaning towards male, but they remain with that cuter, more childish tone to them.
