These communities were very rural(as in you can only get to them by boat or small plane, and only during some parts of the year due to the harsh winter conditions, and it can takes hours) and many relied on subsistence living(hunting, fishing, gathering) to get by, they’ve lost everything including their homes to the sea and are now having to take refuge in cities as Alaska’s winter approach’s

Anchorage(the only major city in Alaska where most are being relocated) is already experiencing a housing/shelter crisis, and while right now in the midst of this emergency it is bringing the community together I fear what may come in the long term

When you live a subsistence lifestyle you don’t keep much money in the bank, and they’re separated from the land that has provided for them. Finding work and new homes is going to be difficult, and the city is full of racist discrimination specifically against native peoples

Willow has moved to another state with her caregiver. Due to the high cost of moving, she had to leave most of her belongings behind. It's particularly difficult for foster youth like Willow to part with their possessions, especially since they often come into foster care with very little. She hopes to replace some of the items she lost, starting with Kuromi and Melody Squishmallows. This book celebrates the centennial of the totem pole collection at what is now Sitka National Historical Park. First it traces the history and cultural significance of totem carving among the Tlingit and Haida people, including how totem carving was influenced by the fur trade and then extended contact with White settlers.  Next, it traces Governor John G. Brady’s drive to collect totem poles from tribal leaders for Alaska exhibits at two world’s fairs: the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis and the 1905 Lewis and Clark Exposition in Portland, Oregon. This is followed by an introduction to Sika National Historical Park’s history. Its first iteration was as a public park created in 1890, before it was elevated to a National monument in 1910. In the 1930’s, the park’s deteriorating totem collection was restored, if initially sometimes inexpertly, by a cadre of workers under New Deal programs which also led to the revitalization of totem carving as an artform. In 1972, Sitka National Monument became Sitka National Historical Park. Greater funding in the 1970’s and 1980’s secured better preservation for totem carvings and more professional reproductions of deteriorated work. In the 1990’s preservationists experimented with better wood preservation techniques and the park’s visitor center was revamped.
