*it is only fake in a sense that there was no real enemy that ws fought, but in the greater structures (parading booty, giving out money (even though it's to the soldiers and not the populus), sacrificing to the gods etc) it had triumphal elements, even though the Senate was completely sidelined.

Agrippa says that the image of Regulus is “a lion or cat, or the figure of an honorable person sitting in a chair; it rendereth a man temperate, apeaseth wrath, and giveth favor.” Whether it is the talisman-bearer’s wrath that is appeased, or wrath directed at them is unclear. For myself, I hoped for both.
