someone in a debate told me that by making personal decisions without asking “the left” on social media first — leaving a platform, changing my work situation, choosing my own priorities — i was somehow betraying the movement.
that idea is strange to me because it treats a political tradition like a single organization with membership rules.
the left is not a church. it is not a party meeting where every person receives instructions before making a life choice. it is a broad collection of ideas, movements, disagreements, and people who often argue with each other.
supporting certain values does not mean surrendering your ability to think independently.
and i think there is an interesting misconception behind this. some people imagine the left primarily through the lens of historical authoritarian states — as if every form of left-wing thought automatically means the individual disappears into the collective.
but that is not how many modern leftists understand their own politics. caring about social structures, inequality, labor rights, or collective solutions does not require believing that every personal decision must be approved by a group.
there is a difference between collective action and collective control.
organizing with others to change society is not the same thing as asking society for permission to live your own life.
i can value community and still have personal autonomy. i can care about broader movements and still say “this decision is mine.”
a political identity is not a contract where you stop being an individual. it is a set of ideas you engage with, question, and sometimes disagree about.
the irony is that demanding ideological loyalty through personal obedience often misunderstands the very thing it claims to defend.

хтось у дискусії сказав мені, що, приймаючи особисті рішення без того, щоб спершу запитати “лівих” у соцмережах — залишити платформу, змінити робочу ситуацію, обрати власні пріоритети — я нібито зраджую рух.
ця ідея здається мені дивною, бо вона сприймає політичну традицію так, ніби це одна організація з правилами членства.
ліві — це не церква. це не партійні збори, де кожна людина отримує інструкції перед тим, як зробити життєвий вибір. це широкий спектр ідей, рухів, суперечок і людей, які часто сперечаються навіть між собою.
підтримувати певні цінності не означає відмовлятися від здатності мислити самостійно.
і мені здається, що тут є цікава помилка у сприйнятті. деякі люди уявляють ліві ідеї переважно через призму історичних авторитарних держав — ніби будь-яка форма лівої думки автоматично означає, що особистість зникає в колективі.
але так багато сучасних лівих людей не розуміють власну політику. турбота про соціальні структури, нерівність, права працівників чи колективні рішення не означає віру в те, що кожне особисте рішення має бути схвалене групою.
існує різниця між колективною дією і колективним контролем.
об’єднуватися з іншими, щоб змінювати суспільство, — це не те саме, що просити у суспільства дозвіл на власне життя.
я можу цінувати спільноту й водночас мати особисту автономію. я можу підтримувати ширші рухи й водночас сказати: “це моє рішення”.
політична ідентичність — це не контракт, за яким ти перестаєш бути окремою людиною. це набір ідей, із якими ти взаємодієш, які ставиш під питання і з якими іноді не погоджуєшся.
іронія в тому, що вимога ідеологічної відданості через особисту покору часто не розуміє саме те, що нібито захищає.
