The Holy See possibly taking steps to accept ACNA (the Anglican Church in North America) (the super conservative breakaway Anglicans who left the Anglican Church of Canada and the Episcopalians in the US bc of gay marriage) (and, in some Provinces [countries], women’s ordination) was NOT ON MY BINGO CARD FOR 2024
Basically the Holy See is, purportedly, secretly working to approve Anglican orders, sacraments etc in ACNA provinces where there aren’t women in ministry, without any need to integrate the structure into the broader fold of the other Catholic churches/rites, or standardize anything ritually (Roman Canon) whatsoever
It’s working according to the Malta I agreement proposals of the 1960s which states that “neither Communion [Anglicans and Catholics] is tied to a positive acceptance of the beliefs and devotional practices of the other.” This is pretty low-hanging unity imo, hard pass—there are very likely Reformed hardliners in ACNA who disagree with veneration of Mary and the intercession of Saints entirely. That’s not real unity.
Mutual acceptance of holy orders would be based on the recognition that each party “accepts the basic truths set forth in the ecumenical Creeds and common tradition of the ancient Church.” This is an incredibly weak basis for full communion, hard pass, imho
Anyways this might all just be rumours, or closed-door talks that lead to nothing. After all, there isn’t any news coming out about it. Most likely that’s what it is. But Google says otherwise haha. Fellow Catholic mutuals, thoughts??
