looked at an extremely cool buprestid today, Acmaeodera barri, looking like a damn snowman just to be seasonally appropriate. also in case it's not obvious, all that white is extremely dense scales:
what's extra interesting to me is that the genus this species is in has over 140 describes species in the united states alone and like 99% of those are all nearly identical slightly hairy black beetles with yellow splotches (which makes them a fucking nightmare to ID, not to mention the only comprehensive guide to identifying them was written in 1899) but this one guy just had to be different
I most commonly find these members of the Genus Acmaeodera (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) hanging out on flowers. This diverse genus has some striking color patterns. Due to the unique way they utilize their wings in flight, they can be mistaken for wasps on first glance. How neat is that?
