I’m confused by the fixation on accelerated programs. What’s wrong with... regular paced programs? 

(warning: I’m going to use some bad language now because I can’t think of another way to appropriately emphasise my point)

It sounds like you need to slow the fuck down. 

Breathe. Take a step back. Forget about what you can complete in the fastest time. If you had all the time in the world, what would you want to do? 

 If you felt like you were on the right path until you failed one class, what’s different now? Do you still want to be a nurse but feel like because you failed to graduate within a year there’s no point? If so, refer to my earlier slow the fuck down point. If you’re passionate about nursing, give yourself the time you need to learn what you need to learn. There’s no shame in taking a longer path.

Or, have you realized that you rushed into nursing when it’s not really what you want to do? If so, refer to my earlier slow the fuck down point. Spend some time thinking about what you enjoy. Speak to a careers counselor. Do some research online. Doctors and nurses are not the only healthcare professionals. Which roles appeal to you? Which don’t? 

Ultimately, even if you decide to continue your nursing degree and then later decide you want to do something else, that’s okay. You’ve got time! You can continue to try this out, and if it turns out that it’s not for you, you’re allowed to change your mind later on. Lots of people have multiple careers in their lifetime nowadays. 

I received the fortunate news of being admitting into Stony Brook University for Nursing School! After months of unsure of where my future was heading, all the pieces are coming together and I’m finally going to be a Nurse!

I’m wickedly excited, but then it dawned on me that I have to make a decision! The other school I applied to was Columbia University. I have some ties over there at the School of Nursing so my chances of getting in are really high. Not to mention I did an internship their last year which I was told, “you’re a shoe in, only because I was apart of the internship.” Therefore, I’d be super surprised if I DON’T get in. 

Now the question at hand is, which school do I DECIDE?!

I wanted to be a nurse since 2015. I received my BS in Health Care Administration. I decided to go this route so that I can always have a back up if I don’t get into Nursing School. My first choice as always Stony Brook. It’s affordable, great school, not far from home, and just thought I’d be a great fit. It wasn’t until I gained that internship at Columbia University in 2016, which pretty much changed my whole life. It opened many doors for me in terms of getting a job and networking with great researchers. Although my grades were phenomenal, i did not think I could get into the school. But seeing how life has taken it’s course, I feel very positive. (Decisions come out in Mid-February).

Columbia University Medical Center is located in Washington Heights. I’ve worked on projects with the School of Nursing and I can already tell that their goals align so well with what I’d like to do in the future, and that is to help low income urban populations. They have a brand new Nursing Facility and tons of affiliated hospitals across the city. Not to mention they have an integration period where they send nursing students abroad to learn more about global health. They offer a 15 month program with the results of a Masters and a great name to your resume.

Here’s the con. Which isn’t a lot, but it’s pretty big. The program cost is nearly $100,000 dollars. I come from a family of NOTHING. I never had to borrow money for school. I’ve never even seen a fraction of this money in my family’s bank account. The idea of having to take out such a high loan at the expense of getting my education from a private (pretty good private) school seems unbalanced. Is it worth delaying buying a home, potentially getting a nice car, sacrificing vacations or even starting a family?

Or I can even go for a school like Stony Brook which is a great State School that is SUPER affordable. I’ll have the opportunity to really get that college experience and live away from home for the first time. Be independent, have my first car, leave the city. Etc... It offers a 12 month program with the results of my seconds bachelors degree. It’s not in an urban setting, but it is in Long Island which has a pretty innovative and well developed hospital brand, Northwell Health. 

I’ve come to realize that this is coming down to affordability and independence vs. higher level education and dependency (financially). 

I can’t even begin to tell you which school feels right because they both do for their own reasons. I’ll be honest, I do feel pressured to choose Columbia given that I work there already. It’s a dream school for many out there that don’t even get the invite in. But it’s a lot of money. I’m still putting a nonrefundable deposit into Stony Brook of $200 so I can think more about it (like who knows I may not even get into Columbia). 

I need to do more research. I’d love to do a Doctors of Nursing Practice Degree which I DON’T need a Masters for. If I choose to go to Stony Brook it’d be a 2-3 year program for $60,000 or if I choose to go to Columbia it’d be a 3 year program for $75,000.
