The night was quiet, unusually so, considering where he was, and when for that matter. The nights of Gensokyo were ruled by youkai. To step foot outside of the village as a human was suicide at this hour.
But for some reason, the forest was oddly quiet tonight. Was it perhaps because of that earthquake earlier? Or was there another reason why the young man hadn’t seen a single soul since he departed from the house that served as his temporary residence? No matter, whatever the reason, he’d be grateful for the silence—it lent itself to an enjoyable stroll through the woods, after all.
Without much care for the world around him, he sauntered along the forested path casually. No glances cast over his shoulder in suspicion, no wary eyes darting about from shadow to shadow, no hastened pace to avoid what might lurk in dark, not a single ounce of uncertainty was held within his gait. No fear, no anxiety, nothing.
In fact, not even so much as a candle to light the path ahead was carried by the man. The dim light of the moon was all the illumination available to him, but even that wasn’t necessary.
For as human as he smelled, human he was not.
Even as the other caught wind of his scent and began tailing him, he continued forward, seemingly unaware of the fox’s presence—that is, until he spoke up to address the owner of those watchful that were fixed upon his form.
“So how long were you planning to follow me for? If I’m to have company, I’d prefer they join me up here rather than hang back like that. Better to have some conversation to pass the time than sit in awkward silence, wouldn’t you agree?” He said, shattering the silence as he turned his gaze in the other’s direction.
