i’m   moving   all   of   my   muses   onto   a   multimuse   to   make   things   easier   on   myself !      i’m   going   to   keep   all   threads   and   move   them   there ,      so   don’t   worry   about   that !      the   new   blog   is   @memoryrot​ ,      so   please   follow   me   there !

“Definitely as good a choice as any…” He nods, understands the yearning for a happy ending – escapism – as far as it could take you away from your real life troubles and worries. He’s partial to the type, himself.

“Maybe…don’t read the one I mentioned if you prefer good endings, though…” He chuckles awkwardly, remembers that that book has…a pretty grisly ending, all things considered.

“Do you read any comics as well~? Or do you prefer a more…traditional approach?” He seems genuinely curious now, wondering what kinds of shared interests they might have, if any.

          HIS   APPROVAL   WAS   STRANGELY      comforting .      he   didn’t   seem   too   bad ,      at   least .      appreciated   that   he   didn’t   seem   put   off   by   the   admission .      knew   that   perhaps   her   preferences   were   telling .      or   maybe   just   seemed   childish .      wasn’t   sure   what   she   would   prefer .      knew   that   she   had   a   tendency   to   make   people   want   to   treat   her   like   a   child   rather   than   an   equal .      knew   that   was   better   than   the   alternative      —      always   being   seen   as   some   kind   of   freak   because   of   her   scars .

Well that’s progress! Very slight progress, but progress nonetheless. He smiles again, searching his brain for something worth talking about. 

“Oh–? Mmh, well, I guess I’m partial to thrillers nowadays…? Nothing that seems especially horrifying on first glance, but just…y’know…stuff that makes you really engage with the text and wonder what’s going to happen next! …I think Gone Girl probably qualifies as one of those…” At this point he’s sort of talking through his stream of consciousness, but he hasn’t forgotten she’s there.

“Ah– but t-that’s just me…what do you typically enjoy?”

          THE   SIGHT   OF   HIS   SMILE      made   her   blush   intensify ,      gaze   flickering   away   again ,      though   this   time   more   out   of   embarrassment   than   fear .      thrillers ?      that   suggestion   sounded   pretty   nice ,      at   least .      a   good   distraction .      didn't   really   mind   that   he   began   talking   more .      had   never   really   liked   talking   that   much   anyways .      was   so   much   easier   to   listen .

Oh geez, now he felt bad. Had he really made her that uncomfortable? Well, to be fair…she did just say she wasn’t good with people. So maybe it’s nothing particularly personal…still though, he doesn’t want to make a bad impression. He freezes in place slightly, expression becoming semi-apologetic.

“O-Oh– I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable, or anything…I– r-really didn’t intend to…” Yeesh, now he’s stuttering too. Hers was a little infectious.

“Would…” He pauses, unsure if he should continue his statement, but knowing it would sound odd if he just stopped talking. “Would you…like some recommendations…? I know it’s not…quite what you were looking for, but…if you’re still looking to get something…”

          RECOMMENDATIONS ?      IT   WAS   RARE      that   she   go   to   anyone   else   for   advice   on   what   books   she   should   read .      but   really ,      was   that   much   of   a   surprise   when   her   only   friend   was   blind   &&   read   more   foreign   books ?      probably   could   ask   others   for   suggestions ,      but   that   would   involve   the   horrifying   task   of   SPEAKING   TO   a   person      —      much   like   she   was   now .

          but   he   had   a   point .      it   would   at   least   give   her   direction .      &&   she   probably   could   use   some   fresh   reading   material .      maybe   something   outside   of   what   she   typically   read .      besides ,      the   next   bus   back   to   yamaku   academy   wouldn’t   be   there   for   a   while   yet .      leaving   the   store   now   would   mean   likely   running   into   even   more   people .      this   might   be   SAFER .      after   all ,      he   was   one   person .      &&   one   who   at   least   seemed   marginally   less   threatening   than   some   others .

          besides ,      he   was   stuttering ,      too ,      now .      was   he   nervous ?      was   she   making   him   uncomfortable ?      it   was   something   common   enough ,      considering   her   appearance .      still ,      the   thought   made   her   fidget      —      shifting   from   one   foot   to   the   other .      “      if   you      —      don’t   mind .      i   could      —      i   mean      —      variety   might   be   nice .      ”      not   a   particularly   glowing   agreement ,      but   her   gaze   would   lift   enough   to   dare   to   meet   his   own ,      finally   lingered   for   longer   than   a   fraction   of   a   second .

Certainly a nervous one, isn’t she? He’s not quite so socially repressed, but he definitely understands the feeling, at least. Before Adam got older, he had a really hard time talking to other people. He backs up slightly, gestures at the space he’s made.

“Here, here…lemme just make a little more room. I’m sorry…I didn’t mean to worry or unsettle you or anything.” Gives an awkward, almost apologetic smile. “I’m having trouble making a selection anyway…so I don’t need to really hog the space.”

          SHE   DOESN’T   HAVE   MUCH      of   a   choice ,      does   she ?      heart   leapt   into   her   throat      —      beating   so   fast   she   could   swear   she   might   die   as   he   moves   over   to   make   space   for   her .      but   rather   than   falling   over   dead   as   she   was   so   eager   to ,      she’d   offer   a   small ,      submissive   sort   of   nod      —      equally   apologetic   in   the   gaze   that   flickered   to   momentarily   meet   his   own .

          but   she’d   edge   over   a   little   closer .      close   enough   that   she   knew   if   she   reached   out   to   her   left   she   could   touch   him .      not   that   she   would ,      of   course .      but   just   that   fact   was   enough   to   make   her   completely   forget   what   book   she   was   even   looking   for .      instead   left   her   standing   there ,      staring   at   the   shelves   before   her ,      desperately   trying   to   remember   what   someone   should   say   in   a   situation   like   this .      “      it’s      —      it’s   okay .      i   just      —      don’t   like   people .      ”      trailed   off   to   a   tone   that   was   all   but   completely   inaudible .      books   shuffled   from   one   arm   to   the   other ,      dominant   hand   now   free   to   tug   at   her   bangs      —      trying   to   make   sure   it   covered   her   scars   as   well   as   it   could .

☂      —      our muses get caught in the rain together .

          IT   WASN’T   SUPPOSED   TO      rain   until   tomorrow .      she   was   sure   of   that     —      had   checked   the   weather   before   they   left   on   their   weekly   trip   to   town   &&   it   said   it   shouldn’t   rain   until   tomorrow .      &&   yet ,      that   seemed   to   have   been   a   mistake ,      judging   by   the   few   droplets   that   fell   on   her   as   they   began   to   make   their   way   back .

          she’d   try   to   think   quickly   for   once      —      looking   around   for   somewhere   to   take   cover   until   it   hopefully   passed      —      landed   on   a   nearby   bus   stop .      not   perfect ,      but   sheltered   enough   that   it   should   keep   their   groceries   &&   them   safe   from   the   oncoming   storm .      “      it’s   raining .      we      —      should   wait   at   the   bus   stop .      ”
