COSMIC HORROR IN DHMIS:
dhmis is so overlooked as a piece of cosmic horror, electricity specifically. one single shot changes the entire tone of the episode, and the series as a whole. yellow is moving upwards, towards what he assumes is a higher purpose, but there is none to be found. the cosmic horror really comes into play with the existence of the door, and the idea that anything could be behind it. there are no answers to be had, no indication that it’s even there, until yellow leaves the room. only lesley knows of its existence, and she clearly fears it.
the book is a red herring, lesley doesn’t want yellow to see what’s behind the door because neither does she, it would only bring about more confusion and pain. she knows the book is meaningless. even if yellow could understand the symbols, he wouldn’t have understood what it meant. their reality makes no sense, there is no explanation for their torment. for all we know, whatever lies behind that door, could just keep going for an eternity, and lesley knows this. she knows nothing about it other than what it implies. they are insignificant in the grand scheme of things, so it’s best to play their parts and never question it, everything must stay in its proper place.
