ive mentioned this a few times, but my main fl character, morgan, is both a proud communist and a catholic, and i wanted to find some of the arguments in favor of christian comminism (look im not as well read on theory as my oc is. youve seen my posts. you KNOW i never learned how to read) but i had the damndest time finding any!!! found a lot of pearl-clutching christians saying that communists hate religion and theyre soooo scary so no you cant be a communist and also like jesus. jesus would hate socialism. no, ive never heard of the sermon on the mount, what the fuck do you mean "the meek will inherit the earth"
but i expected that much. i was more disappointed to see a bunch of smug communists saying that religion is a creation of capitalism used to oppress and distract people, and you cant believe in fairy tales if you want to be a real leftist. at best religion is the last refuge for the desperate and oppressed, a way to make the proles feel like they're doing something while actually continuing to serve capital. yes this is also how Adorno talked about Jazz but we will still keep jazz after the revolution because it's good and people find meaning in it, but we wont have religion because i hate my dad i mean christians i mean organized religion at large
but i KNEW there were christian leftist out there because i have MET THEM and also that was tolstoys WHOLE THING so i know its out there!!! you can't trick me!!!!
thankfully i eventually found some stuff, including a new podcast hosted by two guys with phds talking about christianity and leftist politics (one of them is a journalist and the other is a theologian, and they have a lot of criticism of The Church as an institution while also saying that religion and religious people can have some value in the fight against capital)
anyway. that's probably been the most frustrating research rabbit hole ive gone down for this fic!! so far anyway
