Roll for gender.
So this is a thing I like to do to correct for bias in my writing. Assuming a character’s gender is not somehow important to the story (e.g., they need to be pregnant, or have or lack certain privileges) (it can become important as I flesh out the characters more later on, of course), I like to let true randomness decide for me. Now, you can just flip a coin, but I prefer a d8 so that I can decide three character’s genders at once:
1 = 000 = MMM 2 = 001 = MMF 3 = 010 = MFM 4 = 100 = FMM 5 = 011 = MFF 6 = 101 = FMF 7 = 110 = FFM 8 = 111 = FFF
I mean, it’s a bit limited--it’s literally binary--but it’s main purpose is in making sure you don’t accidentally make all the generals men and all the stay-at-home parents women in a fantasy society that’s supposed to have true gender equality because of your stupid subconscious. Though just today I noticed that the three main characters of a story I was kicking around were all men, rolled a 6, and now two of them are women.
