Umno Youth: Need to analyse first whether Chinese type schools dangerous

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5, 2014:

Umno Youth has condemned Sibu lawmaker Oscar Ling who questioned whether religious schools could also be racially dividing the country.

Ling said this in response to claims that national vernacular schools were guilty of doing so.

Federal Territories Umno Youth chief Mohd Razlan Muhammad Rafii said Ling was also ignorant about the history of Islam, which was the official religion in Malaysia under the Federal Constitution.

He said there was nothing wrong with having Islamic religious schools and Islam never forbade other religions from practicing and teaching their beliefs.

“In these religious schools, there are Indians and Chinese who are Muslims.

“The issue of vernacular schools and religious schools are worlds apart,” he said, adding that religious schools never shunned the other races, at a press conference today.

Training his guns at national vernacular schools, Razlan said the institutions were dangerous and claimed that around 600 national service students were not well versed in the national language.

“Where do they come from? Of course, from national schools that don’t require them to converse in the Malay language. This is clear.”

He also alleged that there was also a growing number of Malaysian Chinese companies in the country that survived without workers who were fluent in Malay.

Razlan wondered if the Chinese community was able to survive without needing to learn Malay, which he stressed, was the national language.

He then questioned DAP whether they promoted such a stand and felt that the Chinese should be different than the rest of the Malaysians.

“Such thinking would be an offence to anyone living in Malaysia. That’s the basis of debating Chinese vernacular schools. So it’s two different issues.”

Razlan added there was a need to analyse the issue on vernacular schools further and discuss whether they were causing racial strife in the country.

“We must respect the schools as well. We’ve allowed it to stay all this while. If we want to take it away, we need to analyse before doing it.
